Chapter 98: Chapter 94, Crossing the River_1
This year She Wu had just matured and transformed into an adult, still retaining somewhat of a cub’s nature.
Back then, Ji Nuan was filthy dirty and skinny, still a half-orc, not fond of talking and not good at integrating with the tribe members.
Now, Ji Nuan was fair and well-groomed, more aesthetically pleasing than the females of the tribe. Even the Orc-like ears and tails, usually looked down upon, became appealing.
Above all, she had located various food sources for the tribe, discovered that the Fruit of Divine Punishment could preserve hunted game and certain wild vegetables.
More importantly, the current Ji Nuan was the disciple of the Tribal Shaman, recognized and proclaimed by Grandma Shaman herself as the next shaman once the winter ends.
Even the food she prepares was tastier than the females’ of the tribe. Hence, the Orcs no longer had much regard for Ji Nuan’s half-orc status. Some Orcs even hoped to become her partner.
And She Wu was one of them.
Ji Nuan chuckled awkwardly, but did not go over to examine She Wu. She was already aware that Xiu Yan and She Wu had been timely rescued by two Eagle Orcs. However, she was still worried about Xiu Yan.
"Damn Lu Te, of all days, he will pay one day, that bad beast, not even sparing his tribe Orcs." Chief Ge Xing angrily stamped his foot on the riverbank, cursing the shameless act of Lu Te for his escape.
His saliva was spewed far as he yelled.
Ji Nuan slowly moved away from Chief Ge Xing, who was behaving like a beast, to avoid being hit by his powerful saliva spray.
"Chief Uncle, it seems Nuannuan’s strategy was indeed fruitful. If not for Lu Te’s disruption just now, She Wu and I would have crossed the river." Pride flashed in Xiu Yan’s eyes, leading to a twitched in Chief Ge Xing’s lips.
The brilliant strategy was conceived by Ji Nuannuan herself, what’s there for you to feel proud of, when you’re not even her partner! Pft!
She Wu also clenched his fist beside them, resenting the fact, "Exactly, that Lu Te is shameless, pushing his tribe’s Orc into the river to harm us."
Xiu Yan glanced at him with his deep eyes, silently moved towards Ji Nuan, blocked her from his sight, ensuring that she couldn’t see the annoying snake beast. Then, he contentedly raised an eyebrow.
Putting the irritating Lu Te aside, Chief Ge Xing waved his hand and commanded, "Alright, Orcs, it’s hunting time. We will cross the Eneru River in the same fashion as our previous attempt."
The Orcs roared in excitement. Now that their tribe members no longer had to serve as bait for the beast-eating fish, they could cross the Eneru River safely without any casualties.
They then ran towards the distance to hunt more Green Bull Beasts.
...
The mid-afternoon sun was especially scorching.
"Alright, now that we’ve finished our lunch, it’s time to cross the river in groups. This time, the Eagle Orcs will split into two groups to lure the beasts.
Therefore, once in the river, you must swim to the other side as fast as you can. Understand?" Chief Ge Xing seriously instructed the tribe members who were about to cross the river.
"Understood!" The Orcs responded loud and clear.
Ying Yan led an Eagle Orc, each carrying a Green Bull Beast bleeding heavily, flying off towards downstream.
The Orcs waited quietly for a moment. As anticipated, several crocodile-like creatures emerged from the river, swimming towards the source of the blood.
The crocodiles hovered beneath Ying Yan and the Eagle Orc, the river filled with the scent of beast blood, but the prey was nowhere to be seen. This left the crocodiles a bit agitated.
Suddenly, as if sensing something, the deadly crocodiles swiftly sank into the river, swiftly swishing their tails as they swam in the opposite direction. In no time, they disappeared from this part of the river.
Subsequently, clusters of dark shadows appeared in the Orcs’ vision, rapidly gathered beneath the location of Ying Yan and his companion, and incessantly tore at the Green Bull Beast hanging over the river.
Not until all the beast-eating fish were clustered beneath the two Green Bull Beasts did Chief Ge Xing yell, "Into the water! Swim to the other side, quick!"
The Orcs, already waiting on the shore, promptly got into the water and started to swim towards the other side.
The beast-eating fish were continuously leaping to tear at their prey, disregarding the Orcs crossing the river.
The first batch of Orcs quickly reached the other side.
Seeing this, Ying Yan and the other orc dropped the half-eaten prey into the water, and flew back.
The two other Eagle Orcs immediately picked up their prey and flew off. They arrived at the same spot over the river from earlier and continued "fishing".
The remaining Orcs took advantage of the opportunity, quickly jumped into the water and swam towards the other side. It was only after the second batch of Orc safely crossed the river that Chief Ge Xing’s taut nerves relaxed
"Alright, Ying Yan, one last tough trip for you." Ying Yan and his brother nodded, picked up their prey and flew towards the river.
Ge Xing looked back at the final batch of the Orcs: "Let’s go, tribesman, it’s just us left. Even though the tribesman ahead have safely crossed the river, we still have to be cautious. Take care not to get injured and attract the beast-eating fish with blood, understood?"
"Yes, Chief!" The Orcs responded enthusiastically, showing their big white teeth.
With a sense of satisfaction in his heart, Chief Ge Xing waved his big hand, and lead the way into the river, rapidly swimming towards the other side with all his might.
Ji Nuan sat on Xiu Yan’s back, gripping the furry coat beneath her tightly, feeling a bit nervous but also slightly excited.
The river crossing was smooth, Chief Ge Xing had already reached the shoreline at front.
Ji Nuan also saw the green grass on the shore, her heart slightly loosened up.
She shivered slightly, the prolonged tension had turned her waist sour and painful.
But the next moment, a sudden prickling pain caused her face to turn white immediately. She looked back stiffly; sure enough, streaks of blood were spreading in the water beneath.
