Chapter 48: Chapter 44, Beast God’s Blessing_1
"Stinky fruit?" Both the Shaman and Ge Xing glanced at each other before giving the elongated food in the stone bowl another thorough examination. Neither its shape nor its taste gave away any indication that it was originally a stinky fruit.
Seeing their hesitation, Ji Nuan smiled.
Using chopsticks, he lifted a noodle from his own bowl into his mouth. The slightly chewy noodle tasted sweet and carried the rich flavor of Giggle Beast soup, time enough to make one want to swallow even their tongue.
Witnessing Ji Nuan devouring his food, the two orcs couldn’t help but swallow their saliva — it looked genuinely appetizing.
The Shaman clumsily held two small sticks together and tried to lift a few round, smooth noodles from the stone bowl. The unpracticed movement made her hand shudder with the effort, the noodles repeatedly slipping off and sending her into a mild to strong sweat.
After attempting multiple times, Ge Xing finally gave up and discarded the exasperating wooden sticks. Instead, he scooped up a noodle and put it directly in his mouth.
The noodles, smooth yet firm and filled with the strong flavor of Giggle Beast soup, delighted Ge Xing. With rapid movements, he finished the entire bowl before anyone could blink.
"Shan Zaizai! Give me another bowl of these ’noodles’ This is delicious, I’ve never tasted anything quite like this before!" Ge Xing wiped his mouth and handed over his now-empty bowl.
Ji Nuan chuckled as he took the returned bowl, filled it again with noodles and Giggle Beast meat, and handed it back to Ge Xing.
It wasn’t until Chief Ge Xing had gorged three full bowls of noodles that Grandma Shaman had finally mastered the use of chopsticks.
Three large stone bowls sat on the floor of the Food Storage Cave.
Ge Xing and the Shaman, both looking excited, turned to Ji Nuan, who was seated graciously. "Shan Zaizai, can other dishes be created using stinky fruit?"
Ji Nuan nodded, "It should be possible. I only gathered them today, and haven’t had a chance yet to experiment with other ways to cook it.
However, this at least proves that we can eat hardened stinky fruit, and it does have a delightful flavor. The problem is we’re not sure yet how long we can keep it."
"Great! Hahahaha!" Chief Ge Xing slapped his leg, causing a loud thump. The joyful laughter that followed echoed throughout the entire food storage cave.
Grandma Shaman also expressed her satisfaction, "Indeed! That’s amazing! Shan Zaizai is a wonderful cub. He’s only been living alone for a few days and he’s already found two sorts of foods. It must be...It must be the grace of the Beast God!"
"Shan Zaizai, are you willing to teach the other tribes-people how to cook the stinky fruit?" Ge Xing asked, looking at Ji Nuan seriously, following his fit of laughter.
Seeing the intense look of expectancy in the eyes of the elders, Ji Nuan didn’t hesitate to nod. He had invited them over to sample the noodles intending to reveal the cooking method of the stinky fruit.
He was just an unassuming young female cub of the Watson Tribe, who had, thanks to the collective efforts of hunting and gathering of the tribe members, managed to survive after being orphaned.
Now that she had been reborn in this body, she was a member of this Tribe. The power of the tribe would be her assurance of safety in The Orc Continent.
"Great! Hahaha, Shaman, I plan to take Shan Zaizai to the tribal gathering this time!" Ge Xing looked at the Shaman, determination shining in his eyes.
"Um, it’s your decision." Surprisingly, the Shaman didn’t refuse.
This caught Ji Nuan off guard.
Since the diminishing number of females in the Orc Continent, tribes had updated their policies to protect this precious resource. Normally women wouldn’t be taken to disorderly events such as tribal gatherings.
But now...
Could it be due to her undeveloped state?
Ge Xing and the Shaman shared a glance and shared an audacious suspicion. After Shan Zaizai recovered from her illness, her personality had changed. She had become smarter and even discovered two new foods.
If Shan Zaizai had become so intelligent, it must be because she had received Lord Beast God’s blessing.
All tribes from Eneru Forest would participate in the tribal gathering. If they brought Shan Zaizai along, who had been blessed by Lord Beast God, she might discover many more things unknown to them.
The eyes of both Ge Xing and the Shaman started to sparkle brightly at this thought.
Ji Nuan felt uneasy under their shinny gaze and shift her buttocks uncomfortably, feeling a chill run down her spine.
"Ahem, it’s getting late. The Chief and I must head back. Shan Zaizai, you should rest too!" The Shaman noticed Ji Nuan’s discomfort and slapped Chief Ge Xing before she cleared her throat and announced her departure.
Ji Nuan watched as the Shaman and Chief Ge Xing disappear in the darkness. After their silhouette gradually blended with the night, she rubbed her somewhat sore arms, turned around, and walked back to the food storage cave. After cleaning the stone pot and bowls, sealing them with large leaves, she dragged her tired body back to her small cave.
And a few beams of moonlight silently followed Ji Nuan inside, kept the cave dimly lit. The young lion cub raised its small head, watching Ji Nuan’s exhaustion from the day’s work, and experienced a hint of complex emotions.
Ji Nuan was surprised that the cub was staring intently at her with round eyes instead of slumbering soundly. His pitiful mewls were still slightly hoarse from sleep, "rawr~"
She let down the beast skin curtain, prominently darking the cave. She felt her way towards the stone bed, based on her memory, and reached out to touch the soft fur of the cub. "Sleep now, little cub. Maybe your leg will be healed when you wake up tomorrow.
In the old tribe, a warrior who once saved my sister used the Shaman’s herbs and felt better the next day.
But you have a bone injury, which may heal slower, especially because you are a cub and your healing ability isn’t as strong as that of an adult orc.
When you’re all healed and transformed into a powerful orc, I’ll wait for you to hunt lots and lots of prey for me."
The little cub, Xiu Yan, placed his chubby little head on his hefty paw. He listened to the cub’s incessant whispers, and it was only when he felt the regular breathing next to him that everything came to silence.
The cub next to him was skinny and showed signs of fatigue. He looked again at Ji Nuan while his aversion for her began to fade.
"Rawr~" He wanted to say something but forgot that he was still at the stage where he couldn’t speak. Listening to himself make the soft mewing sounds, Xiu Yan’s chubby face darkened.
Lying back down on his plump paw, he snorted in his heart: considering that this little female cub had saved him and treated his broken arm and leg, and fed him delicious foods, he would reluctantly take care of her when he recovers.
