Chapter 96: Chapter 92, Beast-eating Fish _1
Ji Nuan also stared at the horrific scene in the river, her face a little pale, her heart pounding rapidly.
Suddenly, the monster fish that was attacking with great ferocity ignored the Tumang Tribe’s Orcs in the river and turned away, swimming off at high speed.
Both the Orcs from the Tumang Tribe and those from the Watson Tribe on the shore breathed a sigh of relief.
Did the monster fish leave because it had enough to eat?
Lu Te floated in the river with a grave look on his face. One third of his tribe’s Orcs had been devoured by the monster fish. Others were maimed, their attack powers severely diminished.
With the monster fish gone after feeding, would the Watson Tribe no longer have to worry about being attacked by these detestable creatures when they cross the river later?
So it turns out that Chief Ge Xing had this cunning idea in mind, infuriating them to no end.
"Ge Xing, no wonder you don’t cross the river. So this is your idea, to feed these monster fish with Tumang’s Orcs, so that your tribe would not be attacked when you cross the river! Such shamelessness!"
Lu Te jumped up and down while cursing Chief Ge Xing, enraged by his own speculations.
Chief Ge Xing’s sliver of sympathy for the pitiful Tumang Tribe instantly disappeared.
He wore a face of schadenfreude: "Heh, with a spineless clan leader like you, the Tumang Tribe is doomed sooner or later."
While the two Orcs were bickering heartily, Ji Nuan turned pale as she came to a sudden realization. Fear made her voice slightly hoarse, "Swim fast! Swim to the other side of the river! Hurry up, more monster fish are coming!"
A sharp, female voice exploded beside their ears.
The Tumang Tribe’s Orcs, who had been bitten by snakes and thus developed a fear of ropes for ten years, did not care whether it was true or not; they swam quickly toward the opposite shore with all their might.
Just as the distance to the shore was reduced to a mere dozen meters, screams of agony suddenly arose from behind the horde. The desperate cries caused a drastic change in their expressions.
The Orcs of the Watson Tribe saw the black clump of tide first, then a crowd of dark green fish backs, red fish bellies, and arm-length monster fish with ferocious teeth, leaping out of the river one after another, launching themselves at the Orcs of the Tumang Tribe.
The following scene made the Orcs, even though they were bathed under the scorching sun, feel a chilling horror all over.
An injured Orc, who had lost an arm, found himself surrounded by the monster fish. A mere few breaths later, when the monster fish dispersed, the Orc was nowhere to be seen, not even a bone was left behind.
Immediately afterwards, the swarm of monster fish rushed on to the next target.
"These are the ones, these beast-eating fish. Every time we run into problems, we encounter these," Ge Xing grimly pointed at the black tide in the river.
Ji Nuan was also heart-stricken, "Crocodiles! Piranhas!"
Moreover, their size was clearly not on the same level as those on Earth, causing their lethal potency to multiply.
Ji Nuan mumbled, "Those crocodiles must be afraid of these beast-eating fish. That’s why they left, not because they were full."
"Crocodiles? Beast-eating fish?" Ge Xing looked at Ji Nuan, "Are these the names of the two types of monster fish?"
Ji Nuan nodded, "Yes, they are the names I gave these two types of fish (I apologize for my boast). I’ll share this with the tribe and the cubs afterward, so they can remember these two fearsome types of fish."
Ge Xing nodded, "With so many...beast-eating fish in the river now, how should we cross it later?"
Across the river, after losing a dozen more Orcs, the remaining members of the Tumang Tribe finally made it to the shore.
Ya Li had been injured too, with countless wounds spread across his body.
With a gloomy face, he took some herbs out of his beast skin package to treat the wounded Orcs; his heart was heavy.
They hadn’t even reached the tribal gathering place yet, nothing had been done, and they had already lost so many tribesmen.
The river was rife with the scent of blood. Too many Orcs had died, and the smell hadn’t fully dissipated yet. Groups of beast-eating fish drew together, scurrying to the bank where the Tumang Tribe was and being trampled to death by the irate Orcs standing guard there.
...
"Chief, does our tribe have any Orcs who can fly?" Ji Nuan turned to look at the grave-faced Ge Xing.
Ge Xing nodded, "Yes, out of the members who came with us this time, three are Rock Eagle Orcs. But they can’t possibly carry all our members across the river."
Ji Nuan shook her head, "That’s not what I mean. From what I noticed, those crocodiles are obviously also afraid of these beast-eating fish."
Once the beast-eating fish show up, the crocodiles run off.
And the beast-eating fish are attracted by the blood in the water. So later, we hunt down more prey,
Tie up the prey with thick vines, and let the Eagle Clan Orcs carry it to lure the beast-eating fish, while the rest of us take the opportunity to cross the river."
The more Ge Xing listened, the brighter his eyes became, and finally, he burst into laughter: "That’s a great idea, ha ha!"
Ji Nuan continued, "But, we better select two Orcs to try it first. Have one Eagle Orc go first to attract the beast-eating fish, and if things go wrong, the other two Eagle Clan Orcs can quickly rescue their companions in the water."
Nothing is ever absolute. It’s vital to prepare adequately. A late crossing is always better off than losing tribesmen.
