Chapter 56: Chapter 52, Self-rescue_1
Ya Gu smirked, "Tsk tsk~didn’t expect this Golden Lion to react so quickly."
Lowering his eyes, he saw the undeniable joy on Ji Nuan’s face, and with a cold, mocking glint in his eyes, he sneered, "Hoping that lion would come to your rescue, are you? Heh~"
After saying this, he took a moment to cast a derisive glance at Ji Nuan.
"Dori, you go handle that lion! I’ll take this female back!" Ya Gu raised his head and directed his words towards a large tree.
Suddenly, a gaping Ji Nuan watched as a massive long-haired gorilla leaped down from the tree canopy, transforming into a muscular orc covered in dense fur.
The orc named Dori swiftly glanced at Ji Nuan, somewhat surprised, and then lumbered towards the spot where Ge Tai had just roared.
Watching Dori’s figure recede into the distance, Ya Gu kept hold of Ji Nuan, who seemed somewhat dejected, and quickly swam away with her.
"Forget any ideas of escape. I won’t let you go, nor will any orc manage to rescue you from me, Ya Gu."
Ji Nuan stopped struggling and calmly allowed herself to be coiled up and carried away by the Snake Orc.
Nearing noon, the Snake Orc finally set Ji Nuan down by a small riverbank. He shook loose his thick tail, covered in pitch-black scales, and then fully transformed into a graceful orc, towering at about 1.9 meters tall.
But she was not fooled by his appearance. The fleeting hints of coldness in his eyes were not missed by Ji Nuan.
"Stay here, and don’t wander off. I’m going hunting."
After speaking, he bent down, allowing a cold smirk to crawl across his lips, "Don’t try to run, trust me, you won’t outrun me."
Without so much as a glance at Ji Nuan’s sour expression, he turned and strode off into the nearby jungle.
Once the Snake Orc’s figure disappeared into the jungle, a cunning glint flickered in Ji Nuan’s eyes.
She got up and gathered a pile of dry kindling. Taking a small stick, which she’d sharpened with a rock, she fastened a thick piece of wood under her foot and began to drill into it making a small hole to light a fire.
The weather was hot, and even though almost all the moisture in the twigs had evaporated, it took Ji Nuan nearly 15 minutes to get the lint around the small hole emitting smoke.
Soon enough, a tiny flame, wavering and shy, sprung to life.
She carefully put the dry kindling she’d gathered on the fire. Provided plenty of fuel, the once minute flame swiftly grew in size.
Ya Gu came back with a Humming Beast he’d hunted, only to find a Fire Seed blazing in front of the young girl.
His pupils contracted sharply, and he quickly dropped his prey, morphing his legs into a muscular snake tail, grabbing the girl and retreating swiftly.
"How is there a Fire Seed here? Don’t you know to stay away from it?" Ya Gu’s voice was tense. Fire Seed was a precious yet dangerous thing. It could keep the orcs warm in winter, but it could also easily take many lives.
Ji Nuan struggled a bit, her voice steady, "Don’t worry, I ignited this Fire Seed myself. Please, let me down."
"What!" Ya Gu was astounded. Did this girl just say she summoned this Fire Seed?
Despite his doubts, Ya Gu uncoiled Ji Nuan and transformed his tail back into legs.
Ji Nuan walked back to the fire and added a few more pieces of firewood.
She turned her head towards Ya Gu who stood at a distance, "I don’t eat raw meat, please give me my portion. I can grill it myself."
With a touch of fear towards the fire still present in his eyes, Ya Gu surprisingly nodded, picked up the Hunt Beast he’d abandoned earlier and walked towards the river.
"If you want to eat grilled meat too, you can bring your portion over. Just not too much or I won’t be able to grill it all." Ji Nuan stood up and instructed the retreating Ya Gu.
Surprised, Ya Gu cast a glance at Ji Nuan and felt a sense of caution towards her sudden change in attitude.
"Hmm," he muttered quietly in agreement, quietly preparing the prey without skipping a beat.
"I’ll go and gather some cumin fruits; it’ll taste excellent when crushed into a paste and brushed onto the roast. " Ji Nuan remembered spotting a cumin fruit tree a short distance away while gathering the firewood earlier.
She placed the gathered cumin fruits on a clean slab of stone about ten meters away and started pounding them into a fine paste. During the process, she subtly opened a small pouch of beast skin tied around her waist and slipped some green powder into the mixture.
After processing the prey, Ya Gu held the freshly cleaned Humming Beast meat and walked over to within a meter of the fire. He spread the meat out on the big leaves that Ji Nuan had prepared, and his right hand stretched out to reveal sharp claws at the tips of his fingers.
With the flash of his claws, the massive Humming Beast was swiftly divided into suitable chunks of meat.
Ji Nuan beside him was dumbstruck. Who could explain to her where a snake got those sharp talons from... were they mutated?
Pulling a face, Ji Nuan had to salute this miraculous world.
She picked up a chunk of Humming Beast meat located on the big leaf, skewered it on a stick, and set it above the fire.
As the flames licked up, the red Humming Beast meat sizzled and spat, and drops of fat, following the lines of the tender meat, dripped into the fire, emitting an irresistibly tempting aroma.
When the meat turned a luscious golden-brown, Ji Nuan removed it from the fire, brushed it with cumin fruit paste using a large leaf making sure all the meat was well-coated, before returning it back to the flames.
Now, because of the added paste, the already appetizing barbecue exuded an even more extraordinary and intense aroma.
Being used to using cumin fruits in her cooking, Ji Nuan was somewhat accustomed to the aroma, though it still made her mouth water.
On the other side, Ya Gu was practically salivating while watching the gleaming roast meat on the fire. The constant "gulp gulp" sounds of him swallowing saliva were continuous, much to Ji Nuan’s amusement.
With a hint of smile in her eyes, Ji Nuan handed the roasted meat over to Ya Gu, "Here, eat it first. I’ll roast another piece, it’ll be quick."
Ya Gu didn’t hesitate, taking the meat from Ji Nuan and ignoring its burning heat. With a "chomp," he bit into it, tearing off a large chunk and huffing in his mouth due to the heat, wincing but unwilling to spit it out.
Finally managing to swallow the meat in his mouth, he immediately started devouring the roast.
Ji Nuan clicked her tongue twice, admiring him. Who would have thought that this stern, intimidating figure would turn out to be a glutton!
Turning absently at the skewered meat in her hands, Ji Nuan occasionally glanced at the Snake Orc, a hint of urgency in her eyes. Was the dosage too small?
"Thud~" Suddenly, there was a noise like a heavy object falling to the ground. Ji Nuan’s eyes lit up. She quickly jumped up, no longer caring about the roast, and turned her gaze towards the Snake Orc.
As expected, the orc that was just devouring his food was now lying stunned on the ground, with a half-eaten piece of roast still in his right hand.
Looking up at Ji Nuan, who was calmly approaching him, he asked in a harsh voice, "What did you do?"
