Chapter 50: Chapter 46, Divine Envoy? Divine Fruit? _1
The tribe’s Orcs never questioned the decisions of the Shaman, and the females were even more delighted.
When it came to the complex task of memorizing herbs and communicating with the revered Lord Beast God of the Orc Continent in legend, they preferred being protected by the tribe’s Orcs while foraging for fruits and such nearby.
Thus, aside from Ji Nuan himself being somewhat stunned by the attention, the decision was surprisingly made quite cheerfully.
"Grandma Shaman, I can’t communicate with Lord Beast God!" For an atheist, this was indeed quite a challenge for Ji Nuan.
Grandma Shaman patted the beast skin beside her: "Sit down!"
Only when Ji Nuan was seated on the beast skin did she take out a somewhat yellowed, tattered piece of beast skin from a bundle next to her, stroking it fondly: "Little Shan Zaizai, do you know? A long time ago, we had a Divine Envoy in our tribe. The method of communicating with the Beast God and interpreting his revelations was taught to us by her.
However, the Divine Envoy was in poor health. After spending three winters here, she passed away due to illness, leaving only this beast skin with mysterious symbols drawn on it. She said the next Divine Envoy would be able to understand it, but so far, no Orc has been able to comprehend the contents of this beast skin."
Ji Nuan carefully unfolded the beast skin handed to him by Grandma Shaman. The symbols mentioned by Grandma Shaman made Ji Nuan gasp in surprise.
These weren’t symbols; they were clearly Chinese characters. It was a letter left for those who would come after.
This Divine Envoy was a sophomore from China’s W Province. Unlike Ji Nuan, who was reborn in the body of a native, she had been transported here. She still had parents and friends in China who adored her. The combination of a pessimistic mindset and the harsh primitive environment caused this young girl to pass away before even three years had passed.
She taught the Orcs here how to use fire and predict the seasons and weather using natural phenomena.
Surprisingly, only the Shamans of each tribe now possess these skills. Due to their decreasing numbers, females are pampered, unwilling to strive to learn complex knowledge. The Orcs prefer hunting to sitting in caves memorizing complicated medicinal herbs.
Therefore, the status of the Shaman in the tribe has become more and more important and sublime, sometimes even surpassing that of the clan leader.
After reading this letter, Ji Nuan was completely relieved. Since it wasn’t actually about communicating with the Beast God, he was still willing to learn to predict the weather and seasons.
"Shaman, the Orcs have gathered all the Fruits of Divine Punishment in the tribal territory!" Ge Xing walked into the cave, looking somewhat upset.
Grandma Shaman straightened up from the beast skin: "A lot of them?"
"They’ve filled up more than half of the open space, these hyenas. I wonder where they found so many Fruits of Divine Punishment." When Ge Xing was just an ordinary Orc, the Tumang Tribe often attacked the smaller tribes around them. Sometimes, during particularly harsh winters, they would even raid the Watson Tribe.
Ge Xing’s father died in one of these battles against the Tumang Tribe, losing too much blood due to his severe injuries.
So Ge Xing had always despised the Orcs of the Tumang Tribe.
"Shaman, shall we send some Orcs to throw these Fruits of Divine Punishment back into the territory of the Tumang Tribe?"
Grandma Shaman shook her head: "If the Tumang Tribe has been throwing Fruits of Divine Punishment into our territory, they are sure to have Orcs patrolling the edge of their territory. We wouldn’t stand a chance."
After thinking for a while, Ji Nuan stood up: "Grandma Shaman, Clan Leader, I know how to handle the Fruits of Divine Punishment."
"What method?" The Clan Leader and Shaman Ama immediately perked up at his words. The gleam in their eyes made Ji Nuan hesitate. Surely these two old foxes didn’t just wait for him to come up with a solution?
Seeing Ji Nuan’s unconsciously bloated cheeks, Chief Ge Xing laughed: "When we came to your cave to eat noodles last night, we noticed that you had cracked open a Fruit of Divine Punishment. We speculated that you might come up with a way to handle the Fruits of Divine Punishment, so... hehe..."
Ji Nuan rolled his eyes, muttering to himself, "Two old foxes."
"The soup that I used to make noodles with yesterday had the Fruit of Divine Punishment in it. I also added the Fruit of Divine Punishment to the Giggle Beast I roasted for Cub today. I found that the roasted meat with the Fruit of Divine Punishment was more delicious.
And..."
Ji Nuan frowned in mock contemplation.
"And what?! Little Shan Zaizai, just say it!" Clan Leader Ge Xing was losing his patience with Ji Nuan’s prevarication.
Ji Nuan, who had felt annoyed by these two old foxes, finally began to feel better. Lowering his voice, he said: "Yesterday I prepared a Giggle Beast, coated it inside and out with salt, and hung it in the food storage cave. This morning, I was astonished to find there wasn’t any foul smell."
"This..." Chief Ge Xing and the Shaman exchanged stunned glances, their eyes filled with disbelief.
"Little Shan Zaizai, are you sure the Giggle Beast meat isn’t spoiled?"The Shaman’s voice trembled slightly.
Ji Nuan nodded: "I’m sure. I specifically checked when I got up to prepare breakfast this morning. It really hadn’t spoiled at all.
Shall we go and take a look now?"
"Good, let’s go take a look!" Ge Xing was so anxious, it seemed like he wanted to transform into his beast form and race to Ji Nuan’s cave immediately to find out for himself. But Grandma Shaman was old and even at her fastest pace, it took nearly 10 minutes to reach Ji Nuan’s cave.
Upon entering the food storage cave and seeing the intact Giggle Beast hanging on the cave wall, the Orcs’ sensitive sense of smell told Ge Xing, even from the cave entrance, that this Giggle Beast really hadn’t spoiled at all.
Grandma Shaman, supported by Ji Nuan, came up to the Giggle Beast meat. She reached out a wrinkled hand, trembling, grabbed one of the Giggle Beast’s legs, and sniffed for a long time.
Finally, assured that there was no smell of spoiled meat, she suddenly knelt on the floor of the food storage cave, choked up as she muttered words of gratitude for the Beast God’s blessings.
News that the Fruit of Divine Punishment can preserve meat from spoiling could guarantee the tribesfolk of the Watson Tribe a peaceful winter this year.
"At dinner tonight I’ll announce this to the tribesfolk. Little Shan Zaizai, you truly are a blessed Orc by the Lord Beast God." Ge Xing said, his eyes glimmering with emotion.
Grandma Shaman snapped out of her excitement and quickly halted Ge Xing: "Don’t tell too many of the tribesfolk just yet."
She wiped the excited tears from her face: "Ge Xing, call over a few strong and tight-lipped Orcs to my cave. Have them set out in search of the Fruits of Divine Punishment quietly, without alerting the Tumang Tribe’s watchers."
