Chapter 7: He discovered her poison The night was quiet except for the noise of galloping horses and the wheels rolling against the rubbles on the crude road. The ride was bumpy and Abrielle could not even get a second of sleep. God, she wished for this ride to be over soon; she had no idea where they were going. This night seemed like it was going on forever. Abrielle could see the image of Cedric quietly riding by the side of her carriage through the window. She was starting to think riding on a horse was better than this Carriage. Finally, the horse came to a stop, and Abrielle fell from her seat due to the sudden stop. The air was thick with sea salt, and it was freezing like hell. It made Abrielle wonder if they were close to the seaside. The door was pulled open drawing Abrielle's attention to the door. The cool sea breeze blew inside the carriage from the open door accompanied by the sound of water crashing against rocks at the water banks. "Your Highness, please, we need to board the ship." A lady dressed in a maid outfit informed her. She was from Cedric's entourage because Abrielle was sure this was the first time she was seeing her. "We are boarding a ship." She was dumbfounded and in shock they were really at the seaside. "Yes, Your Highness, the journey is faster by sea than on land." She said as she gave Abrielle a hand to get off the ground and helped her settle on a seat in the carriage The maid helped Abrielle put on a pair of white boots. Her eyes glanced at the marks around Abrielle's neck but she didn't have any reaction. She was already used to Cedric's Violent nature. A white muffler, which seemed to be made from the softest wool Abrielle had felt before, was wrapped around her exposed shoulders and neck, and then Abrielle wore a dark fur coat. "Unfortunately, there was no white fur coat for the princess, so we have to use this black one, but I assure you it is of the best material." The maid apologized and Abrielle could confirm it was indeed of premium quality. After she was sure Abrielle was protected from the cold, she handed over a pair of gloves to the princess and then gently helped her get down from the carriage. Her eyes darted around to find out they were at the Nightshade port which was one of the busiest ports in Darconia. Even close to midnight, it was a bit noisy with people still embarking and disembarking from ships in the port. "Where are we heading to?" Abrielle asked the maid, who seemed to be in her middle thirties; immediately, she stepped foot on the stone floor. "Unfortunately, I have no idea where the princess is heading. I only have to meet the princess's needs." The maid replied stiffly. She was very well trained in her job and couldn't afford to make a single mistake or offend First Prince Cedric's wife in any manner, who was known for her short temper. As the only child of the Nightshade duchy, Abrielle was spoilt to the extreme, and it was rumoured only a royalty or high noble like her father could afford to wed her. Abrielle tried to find Cedric and the guard with her eyes in the busy port when something popped into her head. "What about my luggage? Are we not meant to pick up my things before leaving?" Abrielle inquired because Cedric suddenly decided to leave immediately, skipping the wedding celebration. Like which groom deprives his bride of her party. This was meant to be her day, but then again, he was the villain for a reason. "Before heading to the temple for the wedding, his royal highness had inspected your luggage kept aside by your maid Dorothy, but he deemed everything in the luggage to be below the standards of a princess of Darconia and insisted on getting you new ones instead." Abrielle felt a headache coming; her supply of poisons was in her luggage. Thankfully, she was smart enough to keep aside some. "How about my handmaid Dorothy?" Abrielle asked while she put on her gloves. The cold was already biting into her skin. Abrielle had a very low tolerance to cold and, during her childhood, fell sick every winter. Although snow was yet to cover the entire Darconia it was still very cold at night during autumn. "His Highness refused to let her join the entourage, saying she was underqualified to serve the princess, and I was assigned to you." Abrielle tried her best to keep a straight face as her brows were twitching. That bastard was ruining her plans, and it felt like he was doing it on purpose. ' calm down, you will win this battle.' Abrielle chanted in her head as her eyes fell on Cedric, who was speaking to someone. He sensed her gaze and looked towards her direction but was met with her dark gaze; it felt like she could not rip him apart. He gave her a provoking smile and then averted his eyes. He was a piece of work, Abrielle kept on cursing him in her mind. The maid led her towards Cedric who seemed like he was waiting for her. They were about to board their ship. It was the largest ship in the port and had the royal flag on it. Cedric wanted to reach out for Abrielle's hand but she avoided his hand. She gave him a weak smile while hiding her hands together. She hasn't forgiven him for almost killing her and had a thousand and one complaint on her mind against him. Cedric's head knight was stunned by Abrielle's audacity and was waiting for an outburst from Cedric, but to his greater shock, Cedric didn't react and just leisurely walked past Abrielle, heading for the ship. "No one should help the princess climb on board. She is capable of doing that herself." Cedric declared in a firm voice his voice was like the law here. His voice was loud enough for everyone to hear before he glanced at his wife. Her brows were twitching in annoyance. "We will have our wedding night on the ship. Next time you plan on poisoning someone don't hide it in your luggage." He mentioned in a fleeting moment as he walked past her. Her jaw fell, but she quickly closed her mouth; he found the poison she had hidden in her luggage. No wonder, she understood why he refused for Dorothy to accompany her because a handmaid is meant to follow her lady to her husband's house. While she was surprised he found out about her poison she remembered his earlier statement about their wedding night. Abrielle's fingers curled into a fist. She almost forgot she had to consummate her marriage with him.
