Chapter 166: Know your place "I lost the baby," Abrielle’s voice was faint, her hand touching her flat stomach. She should be rejoicing that the baby died after all she never wanted. It wasn’t meant to exist, but why did it feel wrong to celebrate? "You don’t seem sad about it. I expected as much." Cedric added, his tone was neutral making it hard to decipher what he felt. Abrielle was at a loss for words; she lost her acting skills at that moment, her true expression showing. There was guilt written on her face. She didn’t want a baby or anything that would bind her to Cedric. Imagine how fucked up things would get if it was known that he was carrying his child. She might even get an official bounty on her head. "There is no need to cry over spilt milk. The baby is already gone." She answered, her head bowed; the guilt that gripped her heart made it hard for her to hold his gaze. "Don’t think much about it; try to get more sleep. We will be leaving in a few hours; hopefully, this storm will stop by then." Abrielle’s eyes darted at him; she was a bit confused. It seemed like he was happy, or was it an illusion? "I..." Her lips parted about to ask something that lingered in her mind. Cedric honestly didn’t want to hear it, "I said it is fine, you were the one who said it was spilt milk. A child was never in the plan but I guess having sex does have consequences if you are not careful." He cut her off. Something pricked her heart, a strange feeling; she felt bitter as the realization hit her: he didn’t want the baby. What was she thinking that Cedric would want her to carry his child? She must be a fool, who he just saw as baggage to him and made it harder for him to have his precious Callista. Things were messed up, she should be happy the baby is gone. The system did save her; she guessed this meant unless the plot control was reduced, the chances of her being able to carry a child were close to never. It was a pretty handful method of child control. Her eyes went heavy with the strong urge to close them; exhausted, she fell asleep on the spot under his spell. Cedric tucked her under the cover to sleep properly; she was cold, curling up into a ball. He felt relieved that she was fine, but a sad smile graced his lips. He was asking for more than he could chew. She was relieved the baby was gone. ***** They didn’t move before dawn as planned, but later in the morning, with the sun high in the sky, the thunderstorm seemed to clear, the same as the blizzard. The damage from yesterday’s storm was massive; rumours went about an avalanche that caught the royal family along with other pilgrims who were travelling to the mountains. Abrielle sat quietly in the carriage, her lips pursed in a thin line, her gaze on the window, watching how much damage the forest suffered. She was uncomfortable but couldn’t complain about it. Why wasn’t she informed that the princess of Galvia was joining her? Why was Sapphire even here in the first place? According to the plot, she was meant to be so heartbroken to be played by Lucian she spent days sobbing in her room. Sapphire was not mean to be sitting in the same carriage as her giving the look she was receiving now like she wanted to read her mind. Unfortunately, there was no space for Sapphire on the maid carriage, and riding a horse up the mountain was out of the question because Sapphire has fragile skin that gets bruised from prolonged horse riding. She didn’t have any animosity towards Sapphire, unlike her slight dislike of Callista, but Abrielle’s senses were telling her that the princess of Galvia didn’t like her, and she had a feeling why. "What do you want?" Abrielle finally asked, tired of playing the silent game. Sapphire arched her brows, her eyes narrowing. She was seated on the opposite seat, her arms crossed over each other as she observed the woman married to Cedric. She could not sense anything special about her, not even a drop of magic, just a pretty doll. She hated women like that, just pretty with no brains. She could not believe this was Cedric’s type. Sapphire already did her investigation the few days she was in the capital about Abrielle and had the general story about the talentless daughter of the Nightshade family that was obsessed with Prince Cedric. Abrielle had no idea how bad her reputation was to Sapphire, not that she cared. "I heard you lost your unborn baby," Sapphire started speaking, it wasn’t the best way to start a conversation. Abrielle had a bad feeling about this. "It wasn’t a secret in the first place," Abrielle answered, trying to be as nice as possible. Sapphire was the King’s guest, that was why Cedric was a bit considerate of her. "You don’t seem sad about it, I heard some noble ladies deliberately get rid of their babies to maintain their shape." And Abrielle thought she was the annoying one with a sharp tongue. "Do you expect me to get rolling on the floor crying over a lost baby I had no idea of. I didn’t know when it was the place of a foreign princess to dictate how I should react over my own loss." Abrielle answered with a very composed voice that shut Sapphire up. The carriage was ascending the mountains, and Abrielle could see damaged carriages on the way from yesterday. Sapphire finally regained her composure and decided to open her annoying mouth again. "You know it is best to let go of Cedric. Holding on to him won’t stop me from getting him. I am aware you know I am more qualified to be his wife than you who can’t even carry a child." Sapphire sneered expecting Abrielle to have an adverse reaction to her words. Instead, Abrielle chimed with a sweet smile, "No one is holding Cedric. You are more than welcome to be his wife, but unfortunately, I will always be the first."
