Chapter 138: Winter prayer

Chapter 138: Winter prayer Days went by, and nothing out of place happened. Cedric was more busy these days. The winter was particularly brutal this year, and there seemed to be a food shortage in some parts of Darconia, so the royal family was working on importing grains from a neighbouring kingdom. Based on the trail of events of the original plot, the winter hunt case was solved by the spring when it was confirmed a religious sect which didn’t believe in the moon goddess Nyxoria was behind it. So Cedric was barely around and she knew it would get worse in the coming days. By the time she was up in the morning, he had left, and by the time he was back, she was already asleep. Another letter came for Abrielle a few days after her mother from her cousin Sebastian. He was inviting Abrielle and Cedric for the winter prayer in the temple. It was an event Cedric attended in the main plot with Abrielle, so she knew she would have to go because, without the invitation, the entire royal family attended the prayers. Zoltana’s hands weaved through Abrielle’s long hair as she brushed it in preparation for tonight. It was the mandatory night she had to spend with Cedric once a week. She was a bit nervous knowing that she was finally going to see him after days. Since the unsealing, they had barely seen each other. "Will you be attending the winter prayer, your Highness?" Zoltana asked, placing the brush she was using on the table as her fingers started to weave through the princess’s hair. Abrielle’s eyes were glued to the mirror as she stared at her reflection; she was actually being dolled up for Cedric, although she doubted anything might happen between them. By now, his feelings for Callista must be growing stronger. Abrielle thought, forgetting the fact that Cedric had touched her twice now, and the last time she saw Callista, he wasn’t particularly warm to her. Hopefully, he shows up, "It is the obligation of the Royal family to pray for the kingdom during this season and that aside, I want to visit my cousin who presides over the temple." Abrielle explained. Zoltana nodded, finding her answer a bit troubled. "I guess we would have to change our plans a bit." She answered. "Why?" Abrielle asked glancing behind to look at Zoltana. They were the only ones left in the room. The other maids had left after they were done with their tasks. "It will be dangerous for you if the priest finds out a daughter of the Nightshade family has magic that isn’t the holy power. There was a reason your family sealed you." Zoltana explained, making Abrielle frown, understanding what she meant. "Does it mean we have to postpone still after the prayers?" Abrielle asked that would be slowing up things. She could have stayed as weak as she was forever. "Not necessarily; we can start with the training from next week. By now, your body has gotten used to the magic flowing in it, but I will focus more on concealing spells to help you conceal your power." Abrielle’s eyes sparkled at the suggestion; she could not avoid going for the prayer, and neither did she want to delay the training any further. "I think that is a great idea." She chimed giving Zoltana her approval. "I guess we will be working with that; by the way, I have a feeling your magic affinity would be strong considering what happened during the unsealing," Zoltana mentioned in a fleeting moment. She was almost done styling the princess’s hair. Besides being a woman, she was amazed at the princess’s beauty and could not understand why she had such an unfortunate fate. "What happened?" Abrielle asked. It was the first time Zoltana mentioned what happened that night, and she was curious about what happened after she lost consciousness. "Nothing too special, I am already done. Good luck tonight." She bowed and then left the room; as she opened the door, a white fur ball took it as an opportunity to sneak into the room. Abrielle did need good luck to face her husband tonight. The meowing sounds from the cat drew her attention to her feet; she didn’t see him when he snuck into the room, and Yuki didn’t like to be ignored. Abrielle bent over to carry the cat on her lap, rubbing its fine fur. Yuki’s injuries were almost completely healed now, which made her smile. "How have you been?" She asked the fellow, who only purred in response. Yuki was kind of cute; Abrielle giggled at his behaviour, momentarily forgetting her worries as she continued to pet him. "I should have asked Zoltana if Cedric was in the castle," Abrielle mumbled as her thoughts strayed in a direction they shouldn’t. Yuki meowed, sounding sad. Its master was thinking about someone else when it was here, but Abrielle was too lost in her thoughts to hear him. He was annoyed by the fact he ended up biting the princess’s finger. Abrielle quickly withdrew her hand stunned why it bit her. "What was that for?" She whined looking at her finger he had bitten. There was a small red mark on her finger. Yuki stared innocently at her like he did nothing wrong and moewed cutely. Abrielle was left speechless by its behaviour, but before she could comment, the door was pushed open without a knock, and only one person could come into her room unannounced. She froze, feeling his gaze from the door as her heartbeat skyrocketed. She was suddenly feeling nervous and anxious at his presence, different from the fear she felt before. Cedric closed the doors behind him. His gaze didn’t leave her for a moment, and he must admit that she looked beautiful, especially in that lacy dress that barely heard anything about her. He drew in a deep breath knowing how hard it was going to be not to touch her. How much did he miss her presence those past few days? Cedric heard a loud meow sound, and his eyes trailed away from Abrielle, who refused to stare back at him due to his nervousness about a little feline that stood protectively in front of him .
