Chapter 50: Death is the beginning of life The maids’ accommodations were in a completely different wing near the kitchen to grant them easy access to carry out their duties. Evelyn agreed and led her to the quarters. On entering the floor, she found it deserted as no maids were around this was because this was working hours which was perfect for Abrielle to carry out her plans. The conditions of the castle at this part were not as excellent as where she was residing but it was still in good shape. The quarters were cold, dark, and quiet, with multiple maids sharing a room and limited access to heating, ventilation, and natural light. With shared facilities, a maid had little privacy which made Abrille wonder how Sarah was able to keep her secret. Their living conditions reflected their lower social status within the castle hierarchy and outside. Their parents were mostly villagers with few coming from the main city. Even the floor here was different, it was made from wood and not marble. Abrielle was being followed by Evelyn who was probably keeping an eye on her courtesy of Cedric. "This is the room," Evelyn announced in front of a wooden door that was identical to the other rooms. The door was pushed open making sharp creaking sounds against the wooden floor. Abrielle’s eyes darted through the small, cramped room which was sparsely furnished with two narrow beds, simple wooden chests, and a small table or bench, with limited storage space and amenities. It meant Sarah had a roommate. "What happened to her roommate?" She asked curiously, Evelyn was hesitant to answer but later gave an answer under Abrielle’s sharp eyes. "Sarah did have a roommate, a simple girl from a nearby village, Lily who was primarily assigned to the winter castle. The morning after you were attacked Lily was found dead with Sarah being the prime suspect." Evelyn informed Abrielle and her eyes went wide; she never expected Sarah to be that evil. Never judge a book but its cover. Such a simple girl with blonde hair not too striking as how Sarah would be described since she was a maid. It was surprising she turned out to be the Queen’s spy nonetheless an actual witch. Witches were practitioners of dark magic hated by the temple because they were not worshippers of the moon goddess Nyxoria and were often associated with other gods and worst hell worshippers. Due to their beliefs, they were able to obtain powers considered forbidden. Sarah killing her roommate to carry out her plans was not anything to a witch. "Has her roommate’s corpse been sent home?" Abrielle inquired further. "Yes, her parents were humble farmers but his highness compensated them for their loss that is all I know," Evelyn answered. Abrielle’s brows furrowed, and Cedric helped the family. So he did have sympathy. Abrielle guessed Sarah might be associated with the summoning of the Khaos which involved human sacrifice. Just the thought of it made her feel like throwing up. She once remembered how disgusted she was when writing one of the summoning scenes. Being born a witch was considered the biggest bad luck which Abrielle had. She was from the strongest family with holy magic and was born with foreign energy associated with witchcraft. Her parents who loved her dearly knew it was better she lived as a talentless fool than a witch due to the discrimination faced by witches. So they made a decision to seal her shortly after birth and everyone who witnessed her birth knowing her true powers was assassinated. This was something Abrielle discovered later in the story while plotting against the female lead and gave her a dangerous edge. That was why she never expected the reward for the hidden request to be the removal of her seal. So far no one had observed anything off about her meaning the seal was not completely off. "Will you be able to give me a moment, I want to check something alone?" Abrielle emphasized. Evelyn was a bit sceptical to let her but there was nothing left in this room except the poor furniture. All other private belongings of the former residents have been moved. "Sure enough I will be at the door please call me if you need anything Princess Abrielle." Evelyn bowed and then left the room. Evelyn was about to open the door when Abrielle asked her another question. "Which bed was Sarah’s?" Evelyn turned to the princess and quickly answered. "The one on the right. Is there any other thing you want to ask?" She inquired, acting very professionally, something Abrielle observed about her from the ship. Abrielle flashed a smile at her that dazzled her eyes. "That would be all for now." Evelyn nodded and then closed the door behind her. Immediately the door shut close Abrielle’s eyes changed. Evelyn probably doubted she was going to do anything dangerous since she was probably known as the foolish, weak wife of the prince. Abrielle had been keeping up this appearance to keep her intentions hidden. Challenging Cedric on the Deck, refusing to climb on board those foolish acts was to make them loosen their guards but she doubted it worked on Cedric. So far she has been making mistake after mistake but she could not afford to fail. ’ Where would a witch hide her spell book?’ Abrielle thought, looking at the room. She had to hurry because Cedric might be back anytime soon and if she stayed too long it would draw suspicion to her. She approached Sarah’s corner of the room and started with the old chest but as expected everything was swept clean. She checked up and below no sign. She was getting frustrated wondering why the system gave her no clue of how to find the spell book. She started to slowly tap the wall at the edge of the room at Sarah’s corner but there was nothing. Her eyes were drawn back to the chest, there was something off about the empty chest and it was drawing her. There was nothing wrong with the wall or the floor which Abrielle had checked and she was sure Cedric’s men had done the same. How was she expected to find something the soldiers couldn’t find? She approached the chest that she had left open. She squatted on the floor and was about to Knock on the bottom to search if it was hallowed. "Death is the beginning of life." An eerie voice whispered in her ears as something cold grazed her skin. Abrielle’s eyes snapped behind her but there was nothing there. Where did it come from?
