Chapter 148: His true fiance Lucian’s eyes snapped to Sapphire’s face, which was as plain as a sheet of paper. The loud screeching sound of a seat being drawn echoed as the queen dowager rose from her seat, her face red with fury. "What do you mean by engagement? How can you be engaged to a lowly slave?" She barked; Abrielle felt a tiny bit sorry for Callista, whose grip on her dress under the table tightened. Callista tried her best not to break down from the look of disapproval. Although it was a lie, her feelings for Lucian were genuine and she did have this dream. "I felt it was reasonable since I was charmed by her talents." Lucian defended unperturbed. Ryker gaze went to the king, whose sharp eyes flickered, and the queen, who was too stunned to react. His voice was stable as he enquired. "What is the meaning of this?" He asked his voice carrying authority and finally snapped Eleanor from her shock. "Lucian, how can you get engaged without our approval? Did you forget you are the crown prince?" She asked calmly, her eyes focused on Callista. There only emotion in those eyes disgust To her, she was looking at a vile vixen that had Bewitched her son, only if she knew Callista was a prisoner being exploited by the crown prince. "I didn’t mean to bring the news to you this way, but I have been too busy lately. It slipped my mind." Lucian defended his gaze firmly. "What do you expect from a great crown prince putting himself first before the kingdom? " Alfonso chimed, enjoying this a little too much. Abrielle, although she was enjoying it, didn’t make her feelings too obvious. She was actually oblivious to what was happening and started to enjoy her meal. Taking small bites. "You seem to have a good appetite don’t you?" She heard Cedric chiming from beside her. She smiled sweetly as they got into their world. "I skipped lunch while inspecting the stores." She replied, making Cedric nod. "Eat to your fill; even if there is a food shortage in the kingdom, you can always have your fill. Don’t bother yourself with such a trivial matter," Cedric mentioned, taking a sip of his wine; the environment had blurred away; honestly, the others never mattered to him except for one person. Their conversation was in hush tones, and with the tension in the room, no one paid attention to the black sheep. "Are you not bothered that this would affect the plans for the food import?" Abrielle blurted before even thinking twice. Cedric’s eyes narrowed with a smirk on his lips. "How did you know about the food shortage?" He asked and Abrielle’s gaze flickered. She had made a mistake; the food shortage was top-secret information only a few knew of. She was put in a difficult situation. A loud slamming sound echoed, which made her jolt, drawing their attention back to the table. Things were getting heated up. "That’s enough," King Kaiden barked, and the room fell into silence. Callista was just an inch from falling apart. Her lips were quivering, and she was doing her best not to break down. She was just a pawn being used by Lucian at this point, but she was doing it for her one-sided love she could not speak of. Abrielle’s gaze turned to Cedric, wondering how he was feeling now because he was meant to be trying his best to hold himself back from defending Callista. Her face fell once she turned towards him and saw his gaze was on Callista as it should be. He must be in an internal turmoil. She bit her inner cheeks, the pain snapping her out. "Lucian, your engagement can’t be recognized, at least can’t be handled in this setting. This is meant to be a welcoming banquet for our guests and not a place to fight, and Alfonso, can you stop instigating Lucian." The king spoke, being the only one to keep his cool. "I am sorry I lost my temper and I apologize to the Galvia royal family for my behaviour." Lucian apologized but Alfonso only scoffed. Everyone had their thoughts, and Sapphire could not look any more humiliated than she already was. Ryker could not stand the way Lucian treated his sister. Lucian might be the male lead of the story, but it doesn’t make him more of a saint than Cedric. The only difference is that he hides his true self under a skin mask and not a gold mask. "I never expected this level of disrespect coming from the Von Drakkar family ", Ryker sneered, gritting his teeth. He was about to explode but stopped when he felt the Sapphire tug his shirt. He held back his anger and let her speak. Her gaze moved from Callista to the king. She drew in deep before fluently speaking. "We were invited concerning the negotiation, and before we came, Your Majesty had assured us of keeping his part, but the kingdom of Darconia can’t keep their word; the kingdom of Galvia will withdraw from the bilateral trade agreement." Sapphire declared everyone saw this coming. "You don’t have to rush into conclusions, this is just a misunderstanding." Queen Eleanor panicked, finally, her calm facade falling with her voice coming out like a stutter. Sapphire scoffed, "In what way? We agreed to come to make my engagement to the crown prince official, securing a strong relationship with the wedding being held as soon as possible, but yet I get humiliated by your crown prince choosing a former slave above me." Sapphire stated, trying to control her reaction despite how hurt she was. The king was lost for words; Callista was the one with a pale expression when, finally, the tears she had been holding back broke, rolling down her cheeks; she bowed her head. "Lucian what do you have to say about this you know why we were here but yet pulled such a stunt," Ryker snapped, tiny flickers of lightening wove on his fingertips "He had no idea of the engagement," Queen Eleanor panicked, intervening. Lucian was not told but he had an idea that was the truth. Eleanor could not afford to lose such a good match for Lucian after losing Abrielle to Cedric.
