Chapter 106: She is lucky Since yesterday, they actively started the investigation where they had to make a trip outside the castle, the voices got louder. He realized he heard it mainly when he was close to Abrielle or Callista. It cursed the former but praised the other. It was driving him crazy, it felt like a plague, and only when he listened to Callista or did her a favour, he rather didn’t, the voices reduced. He rather didn’t want to be close to Callista but as an honourable guest of the king and his investigation partner, he was obligated to. When he agrees to her whims, the voice is reduced, an obvious sign it wants him to be closer to Callista. But that was the last thing he wanted; was to spend unnecessary time with her. She was like an angel, fragile and beautiful, that aroused any man’s urge to protect her but not him. Despite the pull he feels towards her and the subconscious urge to listen to her he didn’t necessarily like her after how she broke Abrielle. Yet the voices criticized the victim and praised the other. Everything was confusing. "I don’t know if I can stop them, but maybe you should listen. It might be telling you the truth you want to ignore." She suggested, which made Cedric suddenly release a murderous aura that shook Callista. "There is nothing true about the lies it tells," Cedric said with all seriousness, which made Callista smile, trying not to break due to his pressure. "What do the voices say?" She asked Cedric’s hand curled into a fist. He rather not say. "It tells pure lies that should never be said out loud," Cedric answered. Although some were true he rather not accept them. "Abrielle is lucky," she suddenly mentioned getting up from her seat. Cedric’s brows furrowed because he knew the last thing his wife was was being lucky. She should have run faster that day because now she was forced to have his enemies and be mixed up in his crazy life. Now his mind and the voices constantly criticized her differently from what his heart tells him. At times wonders if she wanted him dead out of desperation knowing how fucked up he was. Despite knowing that he didn’t want to let go of her. They could not get divorced, but he could always send her far away to somewhere peaceful, away from the chaos, but his greed would not let him. If he sent her away there was no fun, no danger in that. The little danger around her always intrigues him knowing she was plotting something. "I doubt she thinks that." Cedric sneered, causing Callista to smile. "She might not see it but I do. Last night you risked your life to finish up the sorcerers and their ghouls just to get back to her before midnight. It was admirable, and I wished someone would do that for me." Callista mentioned her eyes going dull. Cedric went silent, he did that to preserve her reputation. It would be disastrous if he didn’t meet up for their obligatory night. Rumours travelled fast here. Callista didn’t wait for him to finish. "Thank you for accompanying me. I will look into your condition, but for now, I have to leave. I was invited by the queen for tea. Your wife will also be attending. I will try to apologize for the last time." Callista chimed, giving a faint bow. "She was here," he muttered, he wondered if the gaze he felt earlier was her. Cedric watched Callista leave. She was an oddball; Callista obviously had feelings for Lucian, which she makes obvious. At times, Lucian was close to her; he always found her giving him expected glances like she wanted him to care. Why should he care what she did with Lucian when he was a married man. Callista walked out of the garden back into the castle, then she gave Cedric a quick glance, who was still lost in thought, and then her hands clenched. ***** At the Queen’s Palace, Abrielle was welcomed by the queen herself. "May the moon that shines over the kingdom never fade." She curtseyed. The queen nodded at her. "Almost everyone has arrived, but I would like to start when they all arrive." The queen said, smiling sweetly to Abrielle, which might have fooled her if she wasn’t aware this woman was behind the khaos attack. "I am glad you considered inviting me, I don’t know anyone in the capital since I grew up in Vesper." Abrielle chimed with a sweet smile. Two can play the game of lies. "You are really sweet, it’s hard to believe the rumours. Please walk with me." The Queen beckoned; Abrielle nodded at Elias and then followed the queen closely while Elias trailed behind at a large distance where the Queen’s knights were. "The tea party will be hosted at the greenhouse. Most of the guests are already there." Queen Eleanore mentioned. The queen moved with grace; her raven black hair poured down to her waist, and she had a youthful appearance. "I could not help but mind, why did you choose Cedric over Lucian the crown prince? I do feel jealous I lost the chance to have a wonderful daughter-in-law like you." Eleanore asked, more like she was jealous Cedric got Abrielle’s family connection and support. Since Abrielle was something she wanted but didn’t get. She wanted to destroy it. That was what Abrielle understood about Eleanore. "Lucian is a great person, but Cedric is the one my heart beats for," Abrielle replied, giving an answer the original owner would have. "What a shame. Now I have to bear with that annoying slave girl who always clings to my son acting so fragile it makes me sick. Darconia doesn’t need weak women, it’s unnerving." Eleanore spat; how interesting the queen didn’t like Callista just like in the original plot. "Do you mean the priestess Callista Starlight?" Abrielle asked with a soft smile. Why did she feel happy by the fact the Queen hates Callista? "Yes, that slave priestess that humiliated you at the victory banquet."
