Chapter 17: Drowned in the River The couch man increased his speed, hoping to flee for the port, but Abrielle was making things hard for them. The thudding sounds had successfully attracted the attention of the patrol guards who were on their hot pursuit. "Halt in the name of the king!" They screamed at the mercenaries on the carriage. Oliver scoffed; they knew that if they stopped, even if the maid was not the one they were searching for, they might not make it out. "Can you stop making a fuzz?." Oliver barked at Abrielle, she was clinging to the little hope she had. Oliver kicked the box causing Abrielle to hit her head against the wall. She was a bit disoriented and stopped banging the wall. She blacked out. The carriage ran through the busy night street, knocking people away, and soon they gathered more attention as more guards were now on their trail. "Come on, John, we can't be caught by these bastards." Oliver barked at John the couch man. The chase went on forever with the number of pursuers increasing each second. The carriage bumped into another, causing it to lose a wheel. Some of the barrels in the back started to fall off. Abrielle woke up. She tried to peep through the holes to see what was happening outside, but her line of sight was blocked by a barrel. The sound of several horses' hooves and neighing sounds of horses echoed everywhere. She knew they were gaining up on them. She was injured from bumping into the walls, and when Oliver stabbed the box, he cut her a couple of times. Her entire body was aching but she didn't want to give up and continued bumping the walls. The carriage lost balance after losing a wheel, and Abrielle bumped her head against the walls. Blood started to trickle down from her forehead, blurring her sight red, "Oliver, push her out of the trunk when we get to the Willow Bridge." John, the couch man, instructed Oliver. Oliver started rolling out barrels from the trunk to stop the horses that were approaching them to slow them down. He was able to knock down some of the horses, but their numbers were not reducing. The carriage, with a missing wheel, was screeching on the stone road as it made its way to the bridge. Abrielle had no idea they were about to toss her out because the environs were too loud. On getting on the bridge Oliver pushed her out into the water while the guards continued to follow them. No one suspected the large box being thrown into the water contained the first prince's wife. Abrielle tried to scream but her mouth was tied up. The box rolled over a couple of times before it fell into the water. Her heart was beating so loud she heard it in her ears. She could hear the neighing sounds getting more distant, meaning the guards had gone off. ' This can't be happening. I can't die just 2 days after being brought to this world.' tears started to stream out of her eyes as water started to enter the box through the holes, and she started to sink in the water. This was all her fault; if only she had been bold enough to refuse marrying Cedric, maybe her parents would have understood and none of this would have happened. She was over confident and it ended up being foolishness. She was too rash to take action instead of carefully making plans. Cedric was not someone she could easily get rid of. Why did she have to make him so wicked and strong in the book?why did she had to make Abrielle disadvantaged and this weak? This was the end. She was confident of her knowledge as the author and didn't think of any unexpected variables. Her box was almost completely drowned with water with just a little bit of air. Abrielle had no idea if help was coming. She struggled to survive bumping into the walls, but it didn't make much of a difference. The box was soon filled with water and struck the bottom of the river. She tried her best but she was slowly drowning due to lack of air. If only her hands were not tied she would have found a way to use that method. The darkness started to drag her, and she was almost completely sucked in by the coldness around her. It was freezing; if lack of air would not kill her, then the cold water might. Abrielle felt something struck the box but she was far too gone to pay attention to it. A sword struck the lock on the lid twice and successfully opened it. Cedric sheathed his swords before opening the lid on the box and, as expected, found his wife, dressed in a maid costume, unconscious. He didn't waste a second more and quickly pulled her out of the box then made his way to the surface as fast as he could. He was careless and underestimated how she could attract trouble. What he didn't understand was how she got involved with slave traffickers. Immediately his head got to the surface he took a deep breath then swam towards the shore where his lone horse stood waiting. He was glad when he followed his instincts that led him to the river as if he knew exactly where she was. After pulling her out of the water, he loosed all her binds and checked her breath. She was not breathing and her body was very cold. "You wanted to leave me so desperately it almost cost your life. I have bad news for you, princess. There is no escape unless I say so." He said through his gritted teeth as he started to administer CPR to get the water out of her lungs compressing it. But it didn't seem like it was working, she was getting cold like a corpse. Cedric tried breathing into her mouth while alternating with compression on the chest region but nothing seemed to work. He pried her eyelids open to have a look at her eyes and checked her pulse. Cedric's eyes dulled this was not a good sign she was not responding. Abrielle had a life of comfort and had never gone through any hardship so her body could not handle the stress. "She is dead," he mumbled, unable to believe it. His gold eyes turned into a dark abyss as something dark lurking underneath wanted to escape. He was going to destroy the entire shadow claw guide for this, Cedric swore. He didn't know why her death was making him agitated with the thought of only spilling blood that could calm the raging storm. He tried to administer the CPR more aggressively once more but nothing changed. Her body was still ice cold. Cedric punched the ground so hard his fist bled but he didn't care because the pain he suddenly felt the pain in his chest became more unbearable. Why was he feeling this way? He was confused about what was going on with him and why he was acting so aggressively when this was not the first death he had seen. A very dark flame started to leave his body, but he couldn't care less about what was happening around him. "In the end I was careless." He said with a sick smirk.
