Chapter 203: Lurking in his mind Winter in Vesper was much colder than at the capital of Darconia which was Vitalis. Cedric wondered how Abrielle was able to survive in this weather with her little tolerance for cold. It has been over a month since he left the capital and a week now in Vesper; because Ophelia and Sapphire were not used to the rough road, they had to take it slow and steady. Cedric was not a patient man naturally, but he had no choice but to endure the prolonged journey. There was a manor close to the port which was used for official business when the royal family was in Vesper. That was where Cedric was resident although he paid periodic visits to his in-laws when they invited him for meals. It felt like Rebecca was testing him; she kept on asking if he had been in touch with Abrielle and how many letters they had exchanged. Cedric always tried his best to avoid the conversation so as not to ruin his mood whenever he was reminded of the fact that Abrielle never replied to his letters. He had written to her twice when he first arrived at Vesper and a week later when he didn’t get a reply because carriers birds travel faster, but yet not a single word from her. He knew she was heartless, but could she not spare a few minutes to write a letter, even if it was going to be filled with lies about her missing him? "I can’t believe we finished things earlier than planned. After this shipment is cleared in a couple of days we can finally leave this freezing pit." An annoying voice Cedric had learnt to endure her bickering these past few days mentioned from his side. The sound of waves crashing against the shore and air filled with sea salt were the best features of the port. The rest was dirty and traffic. "If you have a problem with it you are free to head back to the capital or rather go back to Galvai. I am sure your family misses you." Cedric sneered, Sapphire shrugged off his words and followed behind him. This past week, she was like his shadow, following him almost everywhere. It was a pain he couldn’t get rid of. "I would rather stay here by your side; you are very knowledgeable, I must say. You were able to efficiently handle everything." She chirped, refusing to buzz off. Cedric didn’t answer her, they were inspecting the clearance of one of the warehouses. The grains were being moved to their destined duchy and county, each district having its own representatives. Extra caution was taken to prevent the grains from getting infected by the plague that ruined the farmer’s produce. "Make sure some grains are kept for the next farming season. Spring is already close." Cedric instructed a warehouse official, ignoring Sapphire, who was by his side. He glanced at the chart in his hand, flipping through the paper. They were almost done, and if he travelled fast, he might get to Vitalis in 2 weeks. He sighed, thinking about the capital; why was he bothered about finishing early? He was pretty sure that someone didn’t want him returning early. "Let me guess, you are homesick. Missing princess Abrielle I presume." Sapphire chimed, she honestly didn’t know when to shut up. Cedric was a man of few words so he ignored the princess. The sun was setting and the last batch for today was almost done. He walked out of the warehouse. The port was as busy as always, there was a faint scent of hot choco in the air. That would be perfect for the weather. Sapphire didn’t know when to stop, and honestly, her method of getting his attention was not working. Cedric was not blind and knew how capable she was. Without a doubt, she was very skilled, but Abrielle also had her own strengths. Not to forget how she burnt down an entire library. He closed his eyes to hiss. She was lurking in his mind again; she should not be there. It felt like he was meant to be thinking of someone else, but he saw her everywhere subconsciously comparing everyone to her. "Have you heard any news from the capital? I have heard a lot about Abrielle you know." Sapphire pushed on, her annoying voice made his skin crawl. "You really don’t know when to give up. Do you? I am not interested in whatever gossip you have about my wife. Get it to your head. I am married, and there is a clear line between my private life and diplomatic relationships." Cedric spelt out to her. Sapphire smiled; the more stubborn they were, the harder they fell. She knew Cedric and Abrielle’s relationship was not solid. Which wife doesn’t write to her husband during a long trip? "Sure, I understand; I guess you are not interested in the rumours of how your brother Alfonso is roaming around Abrielle. The stories are pretty interesting; I hope you don’t get cuckolded by your wife and half-brother." Sapphire sneered walking away towards her carriage that was waiting for her. Cedric clenched his fist trying to control his rage. She was getting on his nerves and honestly didn’t know when to shut up. At times he found diplomatic restrictions vexing. Sapphire climbed the carriage which slowly rolled away. Her eyes glanced at the window, watching Cedric, who was still rooted at his spot. I smiled and graced her lips. This was just the beginning, there was hope. She smiled and then closed the window. Cedric glanced at the sky, it was all rumours. Abrielle was not dumb to keep Alfonso as her lover he convinced himself. But it was getting hard considering the signs he saw. Why did she hide with Alfonso during the fire? Was the little ginger enjoying her time with the Playboy? "I should write back to Elias," Cedric said to himself. Elias and Evelyn were the few people he trusted with their reports. The sea breeze blew lightly Through his hair that was cascading below his shoulders .
