Chapter 105: Why should she care

Chapter 105: Why should she care The night drew longer and there was no sign of him. The longer she waited, the more bitter she felt, but she would never admit it. Why should she care? He was following the plot. Why was she bothered by these things when she had better things to do? Before she knew it, she was long asleep, curled under the sheets. Very late that night, a few minutes to midnight, the doors closely opened, and a tall figure stepped in. His gold eyes darted around the room, settling on the petty figure lying on the bed. "I guess as much," he muttered, then walked towards a small table that had a bottle of wine in it to pour himself a glass. His long hair was packed up, and he was dressed rather casually in a plain white shirt and a pair of trousers. He gulped down the entire content of the glass in one go. He was drained; a long sigh left his lips before he stood up again and walked to the bed. She was deep asleep she didn’t know what was happening. A small smile etched on his lips; he sat on the edge of the bed, his hands stretched to reach her face, but it stopped halfway he could touch her. So sarcastic he felt dirty and couldn’t touch her with the same hands that spilt blood tonight. Her face was peaceful, and her breath was little and stable like a baby. He felt like he could just stay and admire all night. He needed to sort out things; there was a problem. He didn’t know what it was and had an idea she knew what it was, but she would never share her worries with him... It was better not to think much about it, he concluded, then moved over to the other side of the bed to sleep. He lay under the sheets and kept his hands to himself. Morning came, and Abrielle was woken up by the sounds of the door being opened. Her eyes fluttered open, looking in the direction of the door, where she caught his figure leaving the room. He didn’t even bother to say good morning before he left like he was running from a scourge that was her. He didn’t stay for breakfast today nor did he leave any explanation. Why should she care? He should just do her a favour and die. The carriage slowly proceeded to the palace; Abrielle’s eyes were on the window, watching the scenery that was covered in snow. Everything seemed peaceful but there was this constant unease she felt. Abrielle was accompanied by Elias to the Grand Crescent Palace. He felt more like her detainer than knight honestly. "We have arrived," Elias informed her, his voice breaking her reverie. She nodded at him, and indeed, she saw the long pathway that led to the main entrance. The carriage continued to move until it stopped at the entrance. Elias helped her alight from the carriage. Since she was being invited by the queen she made sure to dress up to a level to respect the queen but was careful not to overdo it in the risk of offending her. She wore a simple but classy green gown. She had wished she didn’t have to wear a corset because her body was still aching from the last time she stupidly spent the night in the forest. The white walls of the palace were made of three large castles connected to each other with several courtyards, in-door gardens, etc. The first castle in the front was the official one where all official duties were held, and the king’s court was located. It was best described as his office, the next castle was the King’s private residence within the palace grounds. Last but not least was the Queen’s Palace, in other words, the harem. Where the Queen’s office is located and is home to all the King’s wives and daughters and young sons. Traditionally, when the boys get old enough, they move out of the Grand Crescent Palace to their own residence, unlike the princesses who stay under the Queen’s protection until marriage, which isn’t long because, before the age of 18, they are already given out to their betrothed. Elias led Abrielle through the palace to the queen’s castle. Her eyes darted around admiring the intricate designs and decorations until her feet stopped. Elias was confused as to why she stopped, but when he followed her line of sight, he understood. They were on the first floor, but from the windows, it was possible to see one of the inner gardens located in the palace; Abrielle’s eyes were on a gazebo where, unexpectedly, she saw her husband with Callista. They seemed to be sharing a drink and snacks. There was no sign that Lucian, Cedric, and Callista had a lot of private moments like this at the beginning of the novel. He seemed happy and was smiling. It must have been wonderful chatting with his crush, who was smarter and more talented than his wife. This was where his obsession with Callista started. Callista reached out to hold his hand. Cedric seemed to have said something that got Callista embarrassed with her cheeks going red. "Abrielle focus, that is enough." She reprimanded herself, trying to pry her eyes away from the window. The longer she looked, the more bitter she felt. Callista, the angel, had the love of the two most powerful men in the kingdom. "Elias let’s continue." She instructed Elias, quickly moving through the hallway and avoiding looking at the windows. Back at the garden, Cedric got up from his seat, quickly pulling his hand away and glanced at the window where he felt someone gaze on him, but there was no one there. He wanted to snap at her as he hated it when people touched him without his permission, but his mind couldn’t bear seeing the hurt look in her eyes that reminded him of Abrielle. "Is something bothering you?" Callista sweet voice asked him. He had this feeling that troubled him, but he ignored it. "No, it’s nothing, but will you be able to stop the strange voices? It’s affecting my sanity and might affect the investigation we don’t want a repeat of what happened last night when we were suddenly attacked." Cedric requested, Callista was the only one he could ask. She was a talented priestess. He had a neutral feeling when it came to her, considering what she did to Abrielle, but she apologized and said she panicked due to rumours she had heard about Abrielle, who was a vicious woman. The rumours were right, but what type of husband would Cedric be if he washed his wife’s laundry in public?
