Chapter 92: Your eyes don’t sparkle like they used to If Jin-Yeok could cry right there and then, I was certain he would. That was the impression he gave me. I gazed deep into his eyes, and something didn’t seem right. His bright emerald eyes had dark fogs lingering in their depths. When I gazed at it, it was as if I was staring at a caged madness that was getting ready to escape into the world. Wait, was the drug starting to take effect? I was already seeing the signs, but it didn’t look like it was affecting his mind yet. He wasn’t going to go mad soon, was he? This didn’t seem right. It felt too soon. Why was the madness showing signs earlier than it should have? Something like this could only happen if he increased the dose of the drugs, and for that to happen, his mind must really be unstable with the thoughts of killing dominating his every action. I could only point out one reason why Jin-Yeok would increase his intake of that dangerous substance. It was me. Did what happened to me cause him to lose his mind? If he didn’t stop then... I just might die as a result of his rampage. "Master," I called softly. "Yes, Jo-Pil." He answered. "You seem different," I said, and he paused. I don’t know how to calm his murderous thirst for blood right now, but if I could do anything that could calm him down, then I would. I just... Had to think and try hard. "How so?" He asked. He probably knew what I meant but was planning to feign ignorance. After all, he wouldn’t want Jo-Pil to know the kind of rotten sides he was hiding. He said it before; his smile was only a facade, and I believed him because I knew it all too well. "Your eyes don’t sparkle like they used to," I said, my hands on his face, gently patting his skin and then brushing the space underneath his dark eyelids. "I’d like to believe it’s because I made master worry by being unconscious for so long, but that’s not all." "What do you mean, Jo-Pil?" He asked, and I pursed my lips. There’s this thing I learned in some books where the main character, after going through a near-death experience, suddenly gets a supernatural ability where they can tell if someone is lying. Though it would be too far-fetched to lie that I had gotten such an ability, it would be great if I said I had something similar. And by similar, I mean a detector. It mustn’t be for lies, but for other things. Other things like... "Death," I suddenly muttered, and Jin-Yeok flinched, his eyes widening as he gazed into mine that did not falter as I continued. "Pardon my rudeness, master, but the air I feel around you right now feels like that if death. I don’t know how I know what death feels like, but that’s exactly what comes to mind. Master... Did you kill someone?" My question drowned him. "It doesn’t seem like one person. It’s not two either. Ten? Twenty?" I bit my bottom lip. "I must be talking nonsense, master, because there’s no way you would delight in committing such acts. I think waking up just now made me crazy to the point that I dare to say such things to your face, but because you asked me to always be honest, I boldly spoke the words that rang in my head." Okay, after saying that I felt like a freaking version of ’William Shakespeare’. Just what the hell was I saying in order to seem respectful? Jin-Yeok did not say a word. He did not speak a single word. Instead, he stared at me with eyes that suddenly held fear as his body trembled lightly. I don’t know why he was trembling, but I had my guesses. It must’ve been either because he was shocked that I had found out his secret of killing people, or frightened about my ability to do so. It could also be neither. After all, I couldn’t read minds. "Master," I called. "Forgive me." He was going unstable because of my words, and I knew he would withdraw for the night to clear his thoughts, and when that happened, I might not see him for the coming days. He might run mad, kill more people, and run mad again. I had to prevent that from happening, so I decided to act first. "Master," I called out to him, hoping he would respond to me, but he didn’t. His skin was growing cold. What was happening all of a sudden? He didn’t just go pale from shock, but he was actually going cold. Like dead man cold. Was this a side effect of the drug I wasn’t aware of? Jin-Yeok looked away, and it was at this point that I knew he would run away, so I decided to fight his cold for him. In order to fight the cold, one needs heat, so I lowered my head and pressed my warm cheeks to his own cheeks, rubbing lightly. He must’ve been shocked by what I was doing, but still, he couldn’t find words to speak. "I’m sorry, master," I said. "I don’t know what’s going on or if what I said offended you, but I’m worried about you, just as much as you’re worried about me. So, please snap out of it."
