Chapter 95: His Wish That question again. Renar stared at Lethia with rising frustration. She kept insisting that whatever she did was none of his business. "Have you forgotten?" he asked coldly. "You were the one who begged for my help, for power... and you even said you’d gladly become my fucked mate." His breath came fast, chest heaving with fury. "And now you dare to ask me whether it’s my concern? You keep asking that. Are you out of your mind?" Renar couldn’t hold the bitterness swelling inside his chest anymore. This time, he had no choice but to spit it out at her. "That’s..." She froze. Her eyes flicked, confused, uncertain. She bit her lower lip. The same lip Renar had wanted to claim, the one that had first bewitched him in that hospital room. Was it lust? Perhaps. But if it was only that, why the fuck did his blood boil like this? Why did every beat of his heart feel like it was ripping open, flooding him with pain? "That’s because I need to survive," she snapped, her voice sharp and cold. She met his gaze with a dead calm in her eyes. "I’ll do anything to survive, to protect my child, and get what I want. I... I’ll use any means necessary to make that happen." Her voice cracked at the edges, and her fists clenched hard at her sides. She knew exactly what her words would do. She knew they would mess his heart. And they did. Lethia’s brutal honesty hit him like a sledgehammer. Even if he had something deeper for her locked inside his chest, he doubted if there was a space for it in hers. He exhaled a long, jagged breath. "Fine. Do whatever you want then." He turned away sharply and stormed off, dragging his feet as if the weight of everything inside him was too much to carry. Renar got into his car and drove away from Zeran’s estate without looking back. He drove recklessly, weaving through the roads like a madman chasing something out of reach. His eyes locked ahead like he wanted to crash into something. Like he wanted to ram into the pathetic feelings swelling in his chest and destroy them. From the very start, he’d only kept Lethia around out of curiosity, for the rare scent of her pheromones that only he could smell. She was meant to be part of his research, a subject to study in his quest to find fated mates through science. That was all she was supposed to be. The car roared faster as he hit the highway. He just wanted to crush these useless fucking feelings. Shatter them. Let them scatter like glass across the asphalt and disappear into the wind. With heavy steps, Lethia dragged herself back into Zeran’s house. A pang clutched her chest, and every inch of her body trembled. Fear crept in, and she convinced herself that it was because Renar would hate her, that the fox’s mission would crumble. She kept calling Whisney’s name, again and again, but still, no answer. "You shouldn’t lie to him like that. Do you like him?" Zeran’s voice shattered her daze. She turned toward it, finding him leaning against the wall, that knowing expression on his face, like he’d seen it all. Lethia averted her eyes. "That’s none of your business." She kept walking, aiming straight for the bedroom she’d been in earlier. "I didn’t go through the trouble of rigging the game just to find out the woman carrying my child has such a fragile heart." His words made her stop in her tracks. She studied him, that annoying face, his tone, everything. It was almost amusing how the almighty Zeran Tuffin had appeared in mid-game like some hero. Lethia let out a bitter laugh, piecing together the web of oddities from the very start of the physical test. "Ah... how pathetic. Turns out we were just circus clowns, weren’t we? So what now? You gonna marry me and make me powerful?" "Isn’t that what you wanted?" "Can you really beat Varrel, destroy the Obsidian Pack, and give me my ranch back?" Her tone turned sharp, challenging. She’d gone soft since meeting Renar. That had to stop. This had always been about power. She couldn’t afford to let emotions cloud her goal. Zeran stepped closer. "If I could, I’d give you all of Ashenhold." "So you’re not capable?" Lethia narrowed her eyes, her confusion deepening. But before she could say more, a wave of heat surged through her. Her heartbeat spiked, her lower belly stirred, pulsing with sudden tension. Zeran’s brows furrowed, like his thoughts had drifted somewhere distant. "Of course I am. But..." He let out a long breath, and then, without warning, swept Lethia into his arms. Her eyes widened in shock. "Wh–what are—" "You’re tired. It’s almost midnight. Let’s sleep first." Zeran’s voice was flat, emotionless, as he continued up the stairs toward Lethia’s room. Off balance, Lethia instinctively clung to his neck. The moment she did, her senses were hit by his masculine scent, a hint of tobacco and heavy vanilla, sinful and addictive. Her heartbeat spiked. There was no point resisting; his grip was too firm, his stubbornness far too clear. Once they reached the room, Zeran lowered her onto the bed gently. But he didn’t leave. He just stood there, and Lethia glared at him with a frown that screamed, ’Don’t you dare do anything stupid.’ "Why? Just go already!" she barked. "Will you sleep wearing that?" he asked, tone still flat. Lethia immediately yanked the blanket over her body. "Y–yes! What’s it got to do with you anyway?!" And just like that, Zeran climbed into the bed and lay beside her with her back facing him. Lethia gasped, instinctively moving to face him, but he stopped her, holding her still in that position. One of his arms slipped beneath her shirt, circling her waist until his palm caressed gently against her lower belly, skin to skin. Lethia’s expression twisted in silent horror. She couldn’t speak. The air shifted with his presence, and her skin prickled with goosebumps. "Sleep. You’re in heat. You won’t be able to rest unless I’m doing this. Our pup needs it." His words clicked something in her. It explained everything, and strangely, her eyelids grew heavier. She should’ve felt uneasy with her heart pounding like that, but instead... a soothing warmth settled low in her belly.
