Chapter 77: No Team? Two glaring red bars on her stamina and speed stats made Lethia bite the inside of her cheek. The numbers put her right on the edge—had her wondering if anyone would even want her on their team. Not long after, a few trainers began handing out papers to the candidates. It was a manual book for tomorrow’s Red Mission. Lethia flipped through the stack in her hands, pulling out the floor plan of the building she’d be entering. "My Queen, we need to find Adam. And two more to fill the team." Lethia paused, hesitation pulling at her tone. "Do you even want to team up with me?" she asked coldly. "What are you talking about? Didn’t I already swear my loyalty?" Chasey threw her a sharp side-eye. "You saw the stats. You think the war starts tomorrow? No—it starts the moment we form a team." Lethia nodded toward the hologram with their stat reports, making sure Chasey saw exactly what she meant. "So what?" Chasey’s lips curled in a half-smirk, her face unreadable. "It’s not like I’m proud of mine either. We just need to team up with someone better than us, right? And oh, my Queen, your accuracy and mental reflexes? They’re way above average and way above me. Honestly, I’m the one who should be worried. No one likes teaming up with a less-brained omega." Lethia’s gaze softened, touched by the fact that Chasey still chose her without hesitation. "Don’t say it like that. I’m grateful you think so." "Whoa... It’s an honor to hear that from you, Queen." Lethia looked at Chasey’s wide grin, awkwardly. "When will you stop calling me Queen?" "Never..." Chasey grinned, teasing Lethia. Lethia gave a small smile at Chasey’s antics, feeling confused by her own reaction—how could she laugh instead of getting annoyed at how silly Chasey was? She reminded her of Teressa, her personal assistant. Only Teressa had ever been able to soften Lethia’s heart and make her open up. As Chasey scanned the cafeteria for a place to sit, she saw Adam waving from a table, already seated. She and Lethia quickly made their way over, joining Adam, who was accompanied by two male candidates sitting across from him. Adam introduced Lethia and Chasey to the two candidates named Arnold and Victor. Lethia could sense from the dissection in their gazes that they knew exactly who she was—and didn’t seem too thrilled about her being there. When Victor spoke, Lethia felt his voice was oddly familiar. "So, do you want us to team up?" Chasey asked after Adam explained his plan. "Hm, the three of us met in the gym earlier, and surprisingly, our scores are pretty similar." "So—" "Adam!" Victor interrupted Chasey. "So you want a pregnant woman to be on our team?" The atmosphere grew tense, the thick air choking as Victor spoke so bluntly. From the corner of her eye, Lethia saw Arnold nudge Victor, a silent warning to watch his words. Lethia kept eating, already having predicted this exact scenario. She had seen Adam’s impressive score earlier, and if these two candidates had similar scores, then mocking her for being on the team was a natural reaction—one Lethia had prepared for. But... Kling! The sound of Lethia slamming her fork onto the table made the four people at the table immediately turn to her. Lethia shot Victor a sharp glance before turning her attention to Adam. "Adam, thank you for your concern, but I think having three aces on the team won’t really make you stand out. So, if you still want to team up with this pregnant woman, I want you to be the only ace on our team." Lethia said it with a polite tone, her voice soft and controlled. She then stood up quickly, leaving the table as her meal was nearly finished, with Chasey immediately following her. She wouldn’t let herself sit through another rejection. Her steps were quick, leaving the cafeteria as swiftly as she wanted to shake off her insecurity. Earlier, on her way to the cafeteria, Lethia had tried activating her hearing powers to check if the chip implanted in her body affected her fox abilities as well. And she learned the bitter truth when she overheard the faint murmurs of candidates who didn’t want to team up with her, the mocking comments that made her wish she could set all of Lykon Haven on fire. The sting that made her breath quicken should have pulled her into sadness and tears, but instead, it fueled her rage. Since then, she had decided not to force herself to find a team and hoped her words would make Adam still want to team up with her. Because, no matter what, she still needed a team with top-notch stamina and speed like Adam if she wanted to win. In that moment, something in her mind snapped. Amidst the murmurs she had heard with her hearing powers earlier, she heard the voice of a man, angry because someone had insulted him, and that voice sounded eerily similar to Victor’s. "So, are we gonna find another team member, then?" Chasey asked carefully, watching Lethia, who sat on a bench in the garden, studying the Red Mission manual instructions. "No." "No?" Lethia paused from examining the building blueprint and looked straight at Chasey. "It doesn’t matter. There are seventy-five candidates now, and each team needs five people. So, even if I don’t look for a team, I’ll end up with one anyway, won’t I?" "But that’s—" "Like it or not, ready or not, there’ll be teams short on people before the game starts tomorrow. And I’ll join one of them, Chasey. So if you want to get the team member you like, you can go back to Adam. I’d rather spend my time learning the blueprint and mastering the manual now." "Why would I leave you?" Chasey lowered her gaze, biting her lower lip. "I hope Adam chooses us." Lethia hoped so, too. She was genuinely touched by Chasey’s loyalty. "It’s not like I’m giving up on forming a solid team. But I think using what time we have left to strategize and master the building blueprint is the smartest move I can make and control right now." Chasey smiled at her. "Do you think we can win together?" "Don’t you want to go to that fancy Gala?" Chasey grinned and nodded quickly. "I don’t plan to lose either. Don’t worry too much, I’m not that weak." Lethia winked at her with a faint, confident smile. She knew she was physically behind the other candidates. But Lethia had something they didn’t—her fox hearing power still worked, and she intended to use it to the fullest. Raindrops trickled down their cheeks, prompting both Lethia and Chasey to leave the park bench as the rain began to fall. They decided to head to the hall instead, all while continuing their discussion about the building blueprint they were about to enter. When they arrived at the hall, where their hologram stats were still displayed, Chasey suddenly froze in her tracks. Her eyes widened in horror as she clenched her fists, making Lethia furrow her brows in confusion. Lethia followed the direction of Chasey’s glare—straight toward Adam, who was laughing and chatting with Arnold, Victor, and several other candidates. "Oh, he tends to abandon us now, huh?" Chasey snarled. Lethia wasn’t entirely surprised by the sight, but what did jolt her was seeing bubbly, sunshine Chasey suddenly brimming with fury. She could see it—Chasey’s breath came in ragged bursts, heat rolling off her body like waves. Her pupils slowly dilated, and the faint glint of fangs began to show. Lethia knew those were the signs—the wolf inside her was furious. "Chasey! Chasey!" Lethia called out, trying to snap her out of it, grabbing her arm. But Chasey shoved her off. Even though tonight wasn’t a full moon and there was no risk of her shifting into her wolf form, if she lost control in this state, she could still get disqualified. Worse—this was Ashenhold. If she lashed out, they could lock her in a silver prison. Lethia quickly stepped in front of her and gripped her shoulders tightly. "Chasey! Please, hold yourself back!" Chasey growled, refusing to respond. "Chasey! No! If you rage like this, you need to say goodbye for a chance to work under Caelum. Please, wake up!" Still, she growled. Lethia’s hands trembled as she held her, Chasey still trying to break free. She wasn’t sure how much longer she could restrain her... or if her strength was even enough to hold her at all. "Oh, Chasey, fine! Go! I don’t give a damn anymore whether you get chained with silver or not—but if you get yourself into trouble, I swear I’ll never consider you my friend again. You know I hate attention, don’t you? So, whether you plan to attack him or not, do as you please. But do it when I’m not around!"
