I need to focus.’ Lethia commanded sharply, her brows furrowed as she clenched her palms against her lap, using the grip as an anchor to keep her focus. She kept pushing herself to concentrate. The tighter her fists clenched, the more she squinted her eyes, and the clearer Doctor Rue’s firm voice and his assistant’s replies became. It was like turning up the volume on them while the rest of the noise faded into nothing but a low, buzzing background. "Is she our last patient?" "Yes, doc. She was the last." Lethia could hear the thud-thud of their shoes hitting the floor, followed by the rustling shuffle of paper. ’Wait, are they going home? No more talk about Renar?’ Her lips pouted, brow still furrowed in disappointment. But just as her focus wavered—distracted by the two patients whispering while glancing her way—the doctor’s assistant said, "So, do you think there’s something between them?" "Something? There must be. I mean, Reia used to be every girl’s enemy on campus. She was the only one who could get Renar to eat with her in the cafeteria." ’Reia? That name again.’ ["Whoo... I thought you didn’t mingle with gossip girls."] ’Shut up, Whisney!’ "Yeah, I mean, no wonder a lot of people hated her. She’s stunning as hell—makes other women feel insecure. Her ranking on the parliament board just keeps climbing." Doctor Rue chuckled softly, "And honestly, it’s not just Renar who changed. Thinking back, out of everyone in our year... Reia’s the one who changed the most." Lethia’s lips and clenched fists twitched. The way Muffy slipped that name out, and how the doctor and nurse gossiped so casually about her, there was no way Reia was just some nobody. And why the hell did she care? She shut her eyes tightly and shook her head fiercely. Pop! Lethia blinked, confused, as her hearing snapped back to normal. She could no longer hear Doctor Rue’s voice. She gasped for air, like waking from a trance, realising her five minutes were up. A sharp jolt shot through her ears, forcing her to press her palms against them to ease the pain. After a while, the wrinkle in her forehead slowly faded as her hearing fully adjusted. ["How is it? You enjoy your new power?"] One brow arched, weighing her answer. On one hand, this "superpower" did intrigue her. But on the other hand, she didn’t feel like admitting it bluntly to Whisney. ’With how limited the time and quota are per day, it’s not that appealing. Why the hell is it only five times a day with five minutes each?’ "..." Silence filled her mind. ’Hey... Whisney...’ she frowned, impatient now that Whisney still didn’t answer. Somehow, it reminded her—every time she asked about the details of what power she had and could give—Whisney always seemed to dodge the question. But then again... who could ever guess what went on in the mind of a cunning fox? Lethia patted down the pleats of her knee-length skirt, trying to smooth out the wrinkles from sitting. Her feet touched the floor as she stood and walked out of the OB-GYN clinic, just as her phone buzzed with a message. Renar: Are you done? A faint smile tugged at her lips, and her fingers moved to reply. Lethia: Yes. Should we go shopping now? Her thumb paused above the send button as she curled her lips inward, hesitating. Then she continued typing. Lethia: Yes. Should we go shopping now? Or are you still busy? I can wait. While waiting for the elevator to open, Lethia raised both her brows, her eyes still fixed on the screen. No reply from Renar yet. Ding! The elevator chimed open. Lethia froze, her steps halting mid-air—Renar was already standing there inside. She blinked, startled. She just stood there, not moving. The elevator doors were about to close when Renar held them back with one hand. "Are you not coming in... Miss?" The glance from two nurses behind Renar, also waiting for her to step in, jolted her back to her senses. She rushed forward. "Ah, yes, thank you. I was... a bit taken aback." Wait—why the hell did she say that? Lethia quickly moved to the very back of the elevator, pressing herself against the wall to keep distance from Renar, who was standing near the door. "Everyone reacts like that, Miss, when they bump into Doctor Renar," chirped the middle-aged nurse in front of her. Renar only offered a faint smile, glancing sideways at the nurse. Lethia let out a half-hearted chuckle. "Ah, really?" "Yes... He’s the most popular here because of how magical his hands are on women." An awkward silence descended, thick and charged, as Lethia and the young nurse to her right stared wide-eyed, trying to digest what the older nurse had just said. "Hah... that would be misinterpreted. What I mean is, his hands are a miracle for what women want." ’That’s worse. Oh please just shut up already. Why the hell is it so hot in here?’ Lethia’s thoughts spiraled into a panic. "Oh, I mean—with his plastic surgery skills, of course. He can work magic with those." Both nurses giggled nervously, and from behind, she caught the subtle clench of his jaw as he dipped his head—tension drawn tight in the curve of it, like he was holding back a smirk. Renar turned to the older nurse, his face calm but smug as sin. "I just learned recently that my hands can ease cramps in pregnant women," he said, stepping closer to her and gesturing with his fingers as if to share a whisper. "And I think I’m good at it... ’cause she ended up moaning too. Sshh... don’t tell the OB-GYN department—they might think I’m trying to steal their job." His deep voice carried effortlessly across the small space—nowhere near a whisper, no hint of secrecy. He hadn’t meant to hide it at all. Laughter exploded from the two nurses, echoing through the 12-person elevator. There were only four of them inside, yet somehow, it felt too full. Lethia fanned the hem of her skirt, trying to cool herself down. The cheeky nurse was already bad enough. But Renar? He was worse, matching the woman’s dirty little tone and then dropping her moans into the conversation like it was nothing. He didn’t look at her. He didn’t say her name. But still, Lethia’s cheeks and ears burned with heat as embarrassment washed through her.
