Chapter 140: The Danger Though her father had fought tooth and nail for the glory of the Obsidian Pack during his life, Lethia had never been impressed by it. He had been betrayed too many times by his own people; betrayals that always ignited chaos and nearly cost him his life more than he cared to admit. In fact, she was convinced his sudden death hadn’t been from chronic heart failure, as the doctors claimed. No, she believed something darker lurked behind it. But just when she thought she’d gained enough power to uncover the truth, betrayal struck again, and she was rejected and cast out. What good was a pack if it couldn’t even protect its own member? The real problem, though, was that half of Obsidian’s members were tied to her ranch, and that alone made it impossible to simply turn a blind eye to their future. "Or... maybe I could just split the pack and form a new one under my ranch corporation," Lethia muttered, pouting slightly as her gaze followed the rows of pine trees swaying peacefully outside the window. "I’ll kick out every single annoying, hypocritical bastard," she added with a dry smile. "Do you need a king?" Caelum teased, "I’m happy to sign up for the job." "I’ll consider it if you can milk a cow." "Ah... I’m terribly weak for that," he sighed dramatically. Their ridiculous banter made Terressa chuckle, even though she still winced from the pain. But that faint, weary laugh was enough to warm something in Lethia’s chest. Somehow, however small the laughter was, it made everything feel a little more bearable. A stretch of lush green reeds and a blooming garden of multicoloured asters greeted Lethia’s gaze as Caelum’s car rolled into Terressa’s yard. A faint smile tugged at her lips when the familiar white-painted house made of mahogany came into view, still standing the same as it had the last time she saw it, just before her wedding to Varrel. Ever since that day, Lethia hadn’t stayed over or even visited Terressa’s house again. And now, a quiet sense of peace stirred in her chest at the sight of the home that once became her escape whenever arguments with her father grew too heavy back in her school days. "Hold my hand," Lethia said firmly as she opened the back door, reaching out to support Terressa’s arm so she could walk more steadily. A shiver rippled up her skin as Terressa’s cold hand gripped her. It startled her. "Terre, are you sure you don’t need to go to a hospital?" Lethia asked with a worried glance. "There’s no need, Luna... I’ll be fine after some rest," Terressa replied softly, and they continued walking along the garden path. "Queen, are we gonna be long here?" Caelum’s voice called out, stopping Lethia mid-step. She turned to face him. "You should go, Luna... I’m sorry for being a burden, I’ll be alright," Terressa murmured, her voice almost apologetic. Lethia paused, weighing the moment carefully. Her main purpose for returning to the countryside today was to find Terressa and seek the truth behind what had happened to Lana, and if possible, collect evidence she could use to take Varrel down for good. "I’ll make sure Terressa gets proper rest first. We can stay until afternoon, right?" she asked Caelum, her voice tinged with a plea. Caelum, still wearing his mask, hesitated a moment before giving a small nod. "It’s better if we head back before sunset. Take your time inside. I’ll wait out here a bit," he replied coolly. Even though Caelum still had his cap and mask on, Lethia could see the worry in his eyes. She gave him a faint smile and a small nod before continuing her steps into Terressa’s house. She had never seen that kind of frown on Caelum before, so tense and concerned. But with six bodyguards and his terrifying abilities, what could possibly go wrong? Caelum let out a long breath as he watched Lethia disappear behind the door. He slowly removed his mask and cap, then shut his eyes. His lips moved in a silent chant, and within seconds, a clone of him stood by his side. Caelum turned to face the bodyguards, his expression now darkened with seriousness. "You three, follow my clone. Quietly. I smell something too strong from the forest behind that hill. Don’t make a move unless you’re attacked first," he commanded flatly, his voice clipped and cold. The three beta bodyguards nodded without question. "What if they want a brutal fight?" one of them asked cautiously. Caelum’s eyes shut again, inhaling deeply as he focused on the scent. It was pungent—an Alpha’s presence, too thick and laced with something foul. He had sensed it earlier, right at the turn before reaching Terressa’s house. And now, standing this close, the aura of that Alpha reeked of threat. He hadn’t engaged in a true fight outside of controlled training back in Ashenhold, but his beast’s instinct couldn’t be wrong. He opened his sage green eyes slowly, a sharp gleam flickering in their depths. "Then you may fight to the death," he said flatly. "It’s the countryside anyway." His clone and the three bodyguards sprinted toward the forest Caelum had sensed danger from. After giving orders to the remaining guards to patrol the overgrown grass near the house and stand by, he turned to face the door to Terressa’s home with a heavy heart. It had never crossed his mind that today of all days, when he was supposed to impress her, he might end up using his beast’s ability to fight. He let out a crooked smirk. ’Might as well let her fall for meharder.’ "Are you good now?" Lethia asked gently, watching Terressa sip the glass of water she had handed her. "I’m fine, Luna... thank you." Lethia took a seat beside her, her gaze tracing the signs of exhaustion etched into Terressa’s face. The branding mark still looked painfully fresh, but her composure seemed somewhat stable. "I’m sorry you had to see me like this," Terressa muttered, lowering her eyes. "You must’ve come here with something important in mind, right?" As if she could read her mind, Lethia gave her a soft smile. "Don’t be sorry. I couldn’t reach you by phone. You never replied to any of my messages. I didn’t know what else to do but come here myself." "Lana confiscated my phone. She found out we were still in contact... and she’s been keeping me busy with all kinds of ridiculous tasks. Last night, she finally caught me keeping your belongings that she ordered me to burn weeks ago. So... this happened." Lethia pressed her lips tight, unable to hold back the storm of questions burning inside her. "How did Lana end up like that?" she asked. "She looked completely lost. What really happened, Terre? I saw her belly... she’s pregnant, right? So why hasn’t Varrel married her yet?" Terressa fell silent. Her fingers tightened around the glass, knuckles paling. "Because... the pup inside her isn’t Alpha Varrel’s."
