Chapter 74: A Hostel The sharp tap of Nyna’s heels echoed down the corridor, soon replaced by the hiss of a door sliding open as she scanned her iris for access. "You’ve already seen everything here. So why are you still calling me?" She threw her words at Zeran, who was fixated on the big screen displaying cafeteria CCTV where Lethia was eating, caught in a frame. "Because she looked like she was in pain while kneading her lower back," Zeran muttered, eyes never leaving the screen. Nyna sat onto a nearby sofa, taking a generous sip of the wine she’d just poured. "If you’re that worried about her, why don’t you just snatch her up and lock her in a golden cage in your mansion? Do you even realise how much trouble you’ve caused with this little game of yours?" She glanced at the technician, focused on cycling through the camera feeds until Lethia’s came back up on the main display. "You must’ve forgotten something," Zeran replied coolly. "I’m not asking for a favour. You’re just simply clearing your debt, no questions asked." His gaze still locked on the screen, one brow raised, whiskey swirling lazily in his hand. Nyna let out a dry laugh. "Heartless bastard." She knew exactly what those words meant—no questions asked was Zeran’s way of saying she wouldn’t get any answers, not even if she dropped to her knees and kissed his feet. He’d only told her that Lethia had become an obsession. He needed to see what she was like inside the game. And Nyna—the head of the recruitment committee—had to bend over backwards, convincing the higher up, including Callista, to change the selection rules just for him. Her fingers tightened around the stem of her wineglass at the memory of how chaotic, exhausting, and royally fucked-up it had been to rearrange everything in a single day. She sipped her wine with a faint smirk, satisfied that the suffering she’d endured over the past two days had finally paid off, with her family’s debt cleared. She’d even made peace with getting fired from Lykon Haven if Callista ever found out that everything she’d done was under Zeran’s command. It was worth it, all of it, just to see that debt erased. "So, how’s her result?" Zeran took a slow sip of his whiskey. Nyna set her wine glass down and started fiddling with her tablet. Moments later, Lethia’s profile and stat results lit up the giant screen in front of Zeran. "Like you see there, she scored high in accuracy and mental reflexes, average in stamina, and slightly low on speed. But when you stack all the stats together, she still meets the standard. She’s obviously passing to the next stage." She paused, chuckling in quiet amazement. "And she pulled that off while pregnant. If she were in normal condition, I’m sure her stamina and speed would be above average." Zeran drained the rest of his whiskey, placing the glass on the table. His eyes scanned the exam report, lingering on the readouts of her vital signs. Then he smirked. "For a wolfless, she’s not bad," he muttered. "Yeah, well, you know, she is an alpha she-wolf. She’s just unlucky to be wolfless. But to be honest, there’s something about her... she’s always been fascinating." "And the game tomorrow?" Zeran asked. "I’ve arranged everything exactly how you wanted. The candidates will be gathered later this evening, with their stats displayed in front of them—and from there, they’ll begin hunting for teammates." Nyna glanced at Zeran’s icy expression and shivered. "This team arrangement is crueler than our Haven games, not gonna lie," Nyna remarked. Zeran rose from his seat, Lethia’s profile photo reflected in the cold depths of his deep blue eyes. "Anything that doesn’t draw blood is child’s play," he muttered, slipping his hands into his pockets and turning to leave, making Nyna narrow her eyes. "But shouldn’t I mark up her low stats, so she’ll have an easier time finding a team?" Nyna’s question made him pause, tilting his head slightly. "You don’t need to. Just leave it as it is. I should respect your fairness motto," Zeran said over his shoulder, throwing her a sinful smirk before walking off, leaving Nyna speechless at his sudden change in attitude. She’d assumed all this chaos he stirred up was to smooth Lethia’s path, and that manipulating her score would’ve been part of the plan. But now he was suddenly talking about ’respecting fairness’? Nyna chuckled under her breath, refusing to believe any of it came from genuine respect. She was sure it was just disaster wrapped up in sweet-sounding words. A hidden curse, dressed like a compliment. *** Tuuut... Click! The sound of the door unlocking made Lethia and Chasey exchange a look before smiling at each other. They stepped into the room with two single beds side by side. "I didn’t even know they used our iris as the room key. This is all too damn sudden. And we’re supposed to stay here for at least 72 hours? Isn’t that, like, a total invasion of privacy?" Chasey grumbled as she tossed her bags on the bed and collapsed onto it. "We already signed the document that said they’re allowed to use our privacy however they want, as long as we’re still candidates. All this is part of the deal. Didn’t you even read what you signed during registration?" Lethia, who was opening the wardrobe, glanced back at Chasey and find her pressing her lips into a tight line, her expression screaming ’I didn’t read a damn thing.’ The room wasn’t big, but it fit two single beds, a medium-sized wardrobe, a single couch, and a work desk with a chair. There was also a robot humidifier that doubled as a dust cleaner, but unlike Tuffy or Muffy, this one didn’t talk back. It only responded to humidifier commands or when it detected dirt. Lethia walked toward the small bathroom with a sliding door. She peeked in. Modest. No bathtub. Just enough to get by. "I didn’t know Lykon Haven had rooms like this... It feels kinda like—" "—a hostel?" Chasey cut in immediately. "You’re not wrong. This wing is literally a hostel for assistants, drivers, bodyguards, and all the lower-level staff of those foreign VIPs. Hell, even countryside guests get placed here so they don’t have to rent hotels outside Lykon Haven." "Mm... I thought this was the executive aide dorm." The second those words left Lethia’s mouth, Chasey shot her a sharp look. "Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t even bother surviving the exam if the aide dorm looked this damn humble."
