Chapter 54: She Want Them Both Lethia sighed softly, staring at the two Tuffin Beasts who were glaring at her in disbelief. "Renar, why did you hit Caelum first?" she asked, her tone firm. Renar clenched his jaw and stood up, water dripping from his designer clothes. "Are you seriously asking me that? What were you even doing here in the first place?" "Shouldn’t you ask first if I’m fine or not?" Renar froze, one brow twitching before he let out a short, bitter chuckle. "You’ve no idea how worried I was the entire way here, only to find out you..." His words faltered, choked off by the knot in his throat. The butterfly on Lethia’s stomach fluttered like it was trying to break out of its cage the moment she saw how flustered Renar looked in his worry. But she didn’t let it take over her mind either. "Don’t! I don’t want you worrying about me if it means you’ll end up beating someone to a pulp like that. Has the test result come out? Does it say I’m your fated mate?" Renar looked genuinely stunned when Lethia brought up the result. "No," he muttered, his voice low as he averted his gaze. "Then don’t act like I’m your possession. We..." Lethia paused, struggling to find the right words to pin down what they were. "We don’t even have the right term yet to define what this is between us. So don’t go overboard." She frowned and let out a deep sigh. But the moment she caught Renar’s brow tightening in disappointment, she cursed herself silently. She knew damn well she was playing both of them without meaning to. She wouldn’t even mind if they ended up thinking she was a bitch—but what tore at her chest was knowing they’d both end up hurting because of her. Renar exhaled sharply. "I get what you mean. But I’m not sorry for hitting him. He deserved it, even if it wasn’t about you." He turned his back to her. "I’ll wait in the car." With slow, heavy steps, Renar walked toward the car. He knew damn well it had been his choice to fall for Lethia—even after she’d made it clear she wasn’t in any place to love anyone right now. Still... hearing her coldly reduce what they had to nothing more than undefined air? Yeah, that stung like hell. "Must you go with him?" Caelum asked. Lethia turned to him, her gaze loaded with hesitation, then lowered her eyes and walked into the house. Caelum followed right behind. "I want my bag and phone back." Clearly agitated, Caelum yanked her arm, forcing her to face him. "Answer me. After what we’ve done, you’re still going with him?" His eyes searched hers, desperately trying to make sense of her confusion. "If it’s about the test—" "Why didn’t you ask?" Lethia cut him off suddenly. "Ask what?" His brow furrowed, disbelief colouring his face. "Ask what I did with Renar." Caelum let out a soft, bitter chuckle. "It doesn’t matter. I want you. I like you." "Did I say I like you?" Lethia asked coldly, her voice enough to make him freeze. He looked stunned, and she hoped to hell that was the worst of it, because what she was about to say next would hurt him a whole lot more. "I don’t know whether I like you or Renar yet. Because I still can’t afford the luxury of liking anyone. But I need you both. And I want you both to fulfill that need." She paused with a calm demeanor, even though her heartbeat was hammering in her chest. "I know I sound like a bitch right now... and that’s okay. That’s just who I am." That was all she had in her. Her long explanation had already hit its limit. Lethia made a silent promise to herself. After the physical test, she’d sit Renar and Caelum down, face to face, and tell them exactly what she wanted: She had to have them both, and they’d damn well have to deal with that. Not long after Lethia got her bag and phone back, she broke into a light jog toward Renar’s car. The ride to his penthouse was excruciatingly awkward—so quiet she could practically hear the thump of her own heartbeat echoing inside the car. She wondered why Renar didn’t just turn on some music or something to put an end to this hellish awkwardness. "How do I turn on the music here?" Lethia asked, running her fingers over the dashboard, searching for the usual spot where the hologram screen would appear. She flinched and held her breath the moment Renar grabbed her hand, stopping it from roaming. He held it a little too long before gently placing it back on her lap, and for some damn reason, that tender act stung her chest a bit. "You’re right..." Renar muttered, clearly choosing not to play any music at all. "I went overboard... when we aren’t even anything. And what we had—" "What we had was just lust. Just a need," Lethia cut him off, firm and cold. "You wanted me because my scent sparked your hunger, and frankly, I wasn’t any better." She laid it out where she stood, no sugarcoating. "But... that doesn’t mean it can’t grow into something in the future. Fated or not. I never bought into all that fated mate crap anyway since I’m wolfless. It doesn’t matter. I choose my own mate." She shot him a glance, and Renar’s brows were drawn tight. The muscles in his arms tensed as he clenched the steering wheel like he wanted to crush it. "So don’t get obsessed over that test result about whether I’m your fated mate or not. I mean, how the hell do you even test that? Is that even valid? Aren’t Ashenhold citizens, especially Lycans, free to choose who they want?" His expression didn’t shift. He just kept staring straight ahead, his eyes sharp as blades. Lethia suddenly doubted herself. Had she been too harsh? She still needed Renar. It’d be a bloody mess if he started resenting her now. "Oh Renar, please... say something, will you? Are you that pissed? Considering we still live under the same roof, how can—" "We need that fated mate, actually," he cut her off. "Or... maybe I should say, we need to create one. The cursed Lycans need it, Lethia..." His words made her freeze. That wasn’t what she expected—hell, that was the complete opposite of what she thought she knew.
