Chapter 145: A Haunted Past Lethia scoffed in annoyance. How dare he raise his voice at her like that? She shut her eyes, choosing to ignore Varrel entirely. Her mind kept spinning, desperately trying to figure out how to break free from him. "I saw enough," he said, his voice low and steady, "how that dagger backfired on Terressa, hovering mid-air while you glared at her. And the oracle said it wasn’t magic. It was like your energy forced itself out of your body to do that. How would you explain that?" There was a cold growl beneath his words, coated in impatience. The Varrel sitting beside her now wasn’t the soft-spoken man she used to know. No, this one was a new different kind of predator. "You saw enough?" Lethia let out a disbelieving chuckle. "So, you knew I was coming here and planned this whole fucking show?" "Not my fault you wanted to come home, right?" he said with a shrug. "I had another plan to confront you, but you came here yourself and made things easier." The word home coming out of Varrel’s mouth made her stomach twist. It sounded like he’d been waiting for her return. "And what if I do have a superpower? What do you want from that, huh? Want me to become your ally? After everything you did to me?" "I have to get what I want first!" he snapped, voice rough and heavy with threat. "Then I’ll answer your question. So, tell me about your power!" No matter how tightly she clung to her defiance, she couldn’t afford to keep pushing him. Not like this. She was sure he wanted her alive—he’d gone too far planning everything for it to be otherwise. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t cross the line, not with that power-hungry glint in his eyes. "That’s... I got possessed." Lethia hesitated. "But I don’t know what kind of being it was. And I don’t know how to control the power." She watched his face carefully. Varrel looked so serious, as if he actually believed her. "It started after I got stabbed. Sometimes, when I’m in danger, it just comes out on its own and protects me." Lethia almost laughed in her head—turns out she was good at bullshitting. ["You’re getting better at lying since I left."] ’I learned from the best.’ She could feel Whisney didn’t want the truth out either. Her gaze flicked to Varrel, who looked like he was weighing every word she’d just said. "Now answer me—what do you actually want with all this interrogation about superpowers? And how the hell did you even find out about it?" Varrel tapped his fingers on his lap. "That’s it?" he asked, one brow rising. Lethia simply nodded, her face blank. Explaining more would only make Varrel more suspicious. "After you stepped on Lana’s foot at the hospital, she kept having dreams that you were going to kill her. So we used the oracle to find out. She said you had a hidden power, something too massive for her to sense. She couldn’t tell what kind of power it was and needed you close to read it better," Varrel exhaled heavily. ["Oracle her ass! The only reason she could sense my spirit is because she’s using the spirit from the underworld. Those bastards can sniff out any kind of energy—but I bet their dumb senses still can’t figure out what the hell I am."] Whisney growled. Lethia wasn’t thrilled with this oracle bullshit either. She frowned. "Are you sure she’s an oracle? She used black magic, Varrel. The forbidden craft my father ordered to never be used. She’s a fucking witch!" The frustration finally slipped from her mouth. Varrel chuckled. "Yeah... and that’s exactly why your father’s reign was weak. He didn’t believe in the oracle. You know what? We’re lucky to have her. She’s a prophet chosen directly by the Moon Goddess. And you know damn well how rare they are since the last doomsday. But now she’s in my hands, and she’s going to help me reach my goals. With her, and with you, we can rule the werewolf society across the world." Lethia blinked dreadfully at the darkened expression clouding Varrel’s face, thick with a wicked aura. She swallowed hard, stunned speechless by the sheer nonsense pouring out of his mouth. "With me? Did I hear that right? What the hell does any of this have to do with me?" "She said your hidden power is strong enough to wipe out the entire world. And I need that." He paused, his filthy fingers trailing through her hair. "Besides, Lethia... I want us to get back together." The words hit her like a sledgehammer to the skull. He wanted what? No matter how pissed off she was hearing that, a sharp jolt of fear still pulsed in her veins. She smacked his hand away from her hair, but the sly smirk he kept flashing told her enough; she was neck-deep in danger, and it was far beyond her control. "Have you lost your mind? Do you even hear yourself right now? After everything you did, you’ve got the audacity to say you want to get back together? Hah! Don’t flatter yourself." Varrel’s disgusting hand slid around her waist, yanking her closer. She struggled, but couldn’t break free. He leaned in, his breath hot at her ear. "I never wanted to leave you, Lethia. I was forced to. Lana... that cursed fated mate bond. I had no choice. But—" "Oh, fuck off with your excuses, Varrel! Even if I agreed to do whatever you wanted, do you really think Zeran Tuffin would let you?" Varrel let out a loud laugh, cruel and echoing inside the car until even the driver flinched. "He surely won’t. But you would. You’ll let me. Because I’ve got something you desperately want. I own Ashcroft Ranch. And the cheese farm." He kept giggling like the twisted bastard he was. "And even if Zeran declares war, even if he comes charging to get you back, you’ll be the one to reject him." Lethia narrowed her eyes. "What the hell are you talking about?" Varrel leaned in closer, whispering against her ear, sending a fresh wave of disgust crawling up her spine. "He lied to you. He’s protecting the one who stabbed you... The one who stabbed his child."
