Chapter 82: Can’t Afford To Lose Lethia could feel her palms sweating against the rifle grip as the elevator doors opened on the fifth floor. Her steps halted, and an idea struck her. She spun around and pressed all three elevator buttons, calling them up to the fifth floor, then quickly ducked behind the wall, rifle raised and ready to shoot. She motioned for Adam to do the same. The elevators didn’t have any LED indicators showing which floor they were on, so really, it was a gamble. The idea might’ve backfired; one of those elevators could very well be carrying enemies. So she stayed on guard, finger near the trigger. The first elevator opened—empty. Without wasting a second, Lethia slipped a paintball bullet between the elevator doors to jam the sensor and stop it from closing. Luckily, when the second and third elevators opened at the same time, there were no enemies inside either. She repeated the same move, wedging paintballs into the door tracks. Moments later, the lights inside the elevators started flickering, and an error alert beeped from the sensors, doors couldn’t close, and then the power cut off completely. "How the hell did you even think of that? What if enemies were inside?" Adam scolded her, but there was a smile tugging at his lips, half annoyed, half impressed. "That’s why I told you to keep your fire position," Lethia said coolly, stretching her shoulders with a shrug. Adam could only shake his head with a smirk before they rushed back toward Meeting Room 5. Just before turning into the corridor, Lethia walked straight ahead and peeked toward the emergency exit door. She spotted the handle tied tight with a thick rope, the end of it stretched taut and secured to the leg of a work desk. All the desks in this building were bolted to the floor, solid as rock. Lethia smiled—impressed, but also wondering where the hell Rowan even found a rope like that in an office. After confirming the knot was tight enough to be a real bitch to break, she hurried back to Meeting Room 5. She was greeted by six pairs of eyes—Adam, Rowan, and Flo—each sitting stiffly. Their gazes locked on her, as if they were waiting for her command, but half-heartedly. And then there was Chasey... camped in the corner, enjoying her meal box with several snack wrappers strewn around her like she was starving. "No, no, no! I give up. Lykon Haven is a damn psychopath nest. How could you wake a Cobra snake VX89 with your bare hands? No. Just send the snake box to the penthouse and leave it," Chasey was rambling mid-chew, her voice dripping with exasperation. "It’s a new version of the ancient cobra mutation, just one bite could send you straight to hell in three seconds," Flo added. "And now the red card’s just lying under it. Hah! Good gracious," Chasey went on, full-on whining now. "Just chew your food and don’t choke to death before anyone gets to shoot you," Adam teased, lips curling. And to everyone’s surprise, Chasey went quiet. Head down. Not a word back. Which was shocking, considering all she’d been doing was whining nonstop for the past half hour. But Lethia knew why it was. Lethia set her rifle on the table, peeling off her helmet and vest. Finally, she could breathe, free from the suffocating gears. Her hand brushed across her lower belly, and it felt like her stomach had officially put in a request for food. She grabbed a meal box and took a long swig from the mineral water bottle as she dropped into her seat. The second she opened the meal box, she noticed every pair of eyes—except Chasey’s—locked on her with stunned disbelief. "Why? Have you all eaten already?" Lethia asked casually, continuing to unbox her meal like nothing was wrong. Adam scoffed. "Well, yeah, of course we should eat, if that’s what our commander says," he threw back, voice dipped in mocking sarcasm. Lethia felt a pang of guilt at the jab. "What are you planning? Why the sudden change of plan, and now we’re stuck on this floor when they’ve already made an alliance?" Rowan snapped. Right. The original plan was to grab the food supplies, link up with Squad B3, and take down Squad B1 together, then straight open the penthouse. But how the hell was she supposed to explain that she heard Squad B1 had already beaten them to it? It was too late to stick with the plan. And what... was she supposed to tell them, she had a rented power from a lewd spirit fox? Lethia glanced at each member of Squad B2 in turn, then let out a deep, drawn-out sigh. "First, we’re already too late to court Squad B3 the moment we heard the gunshots. Second, we’re their target now, so we need solid defense before we strike back." "But they outnumber us," Flo pointed out. Well, not exactly. When in her heightened hearing, Lethia was sure Squad B3 was down to just one or two people, and Squad B1 had only three left alive. "We don’t know that for sure," Lethia lied smoothly. "But what I do know is, they’ll be starving soon enough and desperate. They’ll come for us. So let’s eat this lunch, then move to the plan to wipe them out." "How? You sound like you’ve already figured it all out," Adam asked, his tone tinged with subtle resentment. Yeah, he was clearly against the idea that Lethia had stepped into the captain role without asking. "Kill them all," Lethia said bluntly. "And revive the ones who will be the winners with us." "But only teammates can revive the dead," Rowan countered. "Didn’t you read the manual properly?" Lethia threw him a side glance while still chewing her food. "If all members of a team die, they can plead to the guards, and the guards will offer a revival game," Adam answered for him, skeptically. "But that’s only if all three teams are wiped out in battle." "Exactly. So we make the battle happen and do our best not to die. In the end, two teams are needed to open the penthouse, right? I’m betting we’ll be the first winners, while the guards decide who gets the second slot. And... I think we could take part in deciding who it is." Lethia was not so sure about the last part, but hell, anything could happen in this madhouse. If it blew up in their face, they’d deal with it later. "So my queen is betting on a game she knows she’ll win?" Chasey suddenly popped into view, her face inches from Lethia’s, blinking rapidly and grinning widely. Lethia chuckled. "Unless someone’s got a better plan right now, I say that’s the best shot we’ve got. I can’t afford to lose, and neither can any of you, right?"
