Chapter 62: A Second Reward From the firm yet soft tone, Lethia instantly recognized it was Doctor Rue’s voice, along with her nurse assistant from earlier. Reflexively, Lethia turned toward the OB-GYN clinic and staggered her way to the entrance. She scanned the waiting area, now nearly empty of patients, but her damn eyes couldn’t find either Doctor Rue or her assistant anywhere in sight. Her gaze shifted toward Doctor Rue’s examination room, the door tightly shut—and that’s when two poor ants crawling anxiously on the doorknob caught her attention. From more than twenty feet away. How the hell was that even possible? Lethia swallowed hard, her confusion choking her senses. From that distance, she could still hear fresh gossip about Renar crystal clear. "A virgin?" Doctor Rue laughed, "That’s what our colleagues used to call him, because he was scared of women." "How could a plastic surgeon, whose patients are mostly women, be scared of women?" "Yeah, that was back in college. He was so timid and always awkward around girls. But it changed during residency, he suddenly picked the aesthetic department." Their voices blended with giggles. "Ah, rumour has it... There was only one woman he ever got close to. She—" Suddenly, Lethia snapped and flinched, the conversation cutting off like a cruel slap. The moment she’d been focusing on with laser-sharp ears was gone. She frowned in pure, irked annoyance. Like being ripped out of a broken, dreamlike roller coaster ride, Lethia tried to draw a breath to calm her off-beat heart. She reached for the nearest bench and dropped her ass down, her whole body still tense. ["How is it?"] That cunning fox, Whisney’s squeaky voice echoed in her head. ’What? Wait...Just a moment ago, was that your doing?’ ["How is it to taste that heightened sense, hmm? Do you like it?"] ’Do I need to like it? You could’ve warned me before throwing power at me.’ Lethia rubbed her temples, dizzy from the effect of that sudden power surge. ["Ha ha ha... well, you’ve been so busy lately. So, how was it? That’ll be your second reward."] ’You’re giving me two heightened senses?’ ["No, no, no, darling. You can only choose one, super vision or super hearing?"] The offer Whisney laid out was tempting as hell. Even though this was technically the second reward she gave her, it still felt like the first—because this time, the power felt dangerously seductive. ’How far can my vision and hearing be heightened?’ ["Pick first, then I’ll tell. No use of spoiling what you’re not gonna choose."] ’That’s nonsense. How can I pick if I don’t know what I’m weighing and comparing?’ ["Feel it! You’ve already tasted both senses. So feel it and decide which one gives you the most edge. Ha ha ha..."] Lethia rolled her eyes with a deep, irritated sigh. She almost forgot—this damn fox was just playing her own game, and she was nothing but the pawn. She would always stay in control... even when pretending to give her power. With one long inhale, Lethia closed her eyes, summoning back the surge of sensation when her senses went haywire. If she chose heightened vision, she’d be able to observe someone’s every single micro-movement from a distance. That would help her read facial cues, spot the subtle signs of someone’s intent. But... that wouldn’t do her much good. Most politicians wore masks so thick they could fool the devil himself. Their expressions were crafted with emotions buried too deep. Still keeping her eyes shut, she pressed her lips into a thin, unimpressed line and gave a subtle shake of her head. Not good enough. Then the other option... Lethia’s eyes snapped open, now sharpened with conviction. ’I’ll choose the heightened hearing.’ ["Are you sure?"] ’Yes.’ ["Fine. So, the first thing you need to know about this power is, it’s limited."] ’Oh there, I know you’d never give a cool gift without a catch. I’m not that surprised.’ ["You can summon the power by calling on me, five times a day. And the power only lasts five minutes max."] Lethia chuckled inwardly. ’I’m impressed by your pettiness.’ Silence. A pause in her mind that made her tilt her head slightly, eyebrows twitching. Why wasn’t she biting back? Where’s the usual snarky jab? ["Do you think I’m petty?"] Whisney’s tone had shifted into low, dead serious. It instantly pulled Lethia’s awareness tight like a snapped wire. Was she... actually mad? ’You sure aren’t the generous type. But... I guess I’ve gotten used to your petty ass by now. So, it is what it is.’ ["You mortals are so ungrateful. Hah... No wonder this world’s always hanging by a thread."] ’If I could, I’d choose to be immortal too and yeet myself into a higher realm. Now, can you just please explain how this power works, in more detail?’ ["Well, once you summon the power by calling on me, the next step is you need to control it, so it won’t overload your hearing."] ’How?’ Lethia frowned in annoyance, but instantly smiled and nodded when a patient made eye contact with her and greeted her with a warm smile as they passed by. ["Simple. Focus on the sound you want to hear. It’s like picking a TV channel, or swiping past the crap you don’t want to see while scrolling social media."] ’That’s... annoyingly abstract. What if I can’t focus?’ ["Then you’ll be overwhelmed and waste one of your precious chances to use it properly."] Whisney replied with a teasing tone, followed by a light chuckle. ["When I say focus on what you want to hear, I mean—imagine the sound source, and use that as a kind of mantra. You can even enhance control by giving yourself a small pinch, feel that pain, and centre your mind on it while picturing the sound you want. That’ll tune everything else out."] Lethia nodded along, her expression thoughtful as she absorbed every word. ’Can we try it?’ ["Sure, go ahead. Summon it."] Lethia took a deep breath, her gaze steady though her heart beat like a drum. ’Whisney... let me use the hearing ability.’ ["Close your eyes and breathe deep."] Lethia slowly shut her eyes, and in the quiet dark behind her lids, she inhaled deeply, filling her lungs with that strange anticipation. Then a whirlwind of sounds overloaded her senses like a damn broken radio. She furrowed her brows and clenched her fists, trying to endure the sharp ache in her ears. Just like Whisney had advised, she pinched her arm and focused her thoughts, trying to find Doctor Rue’s voice. ’Doctor Rue... Doctor Rue...’ she kept chanting her name in her head like a spell. But she still couldn’t catch it. So she pinched her arm harder—hard enough to leave her skin flushed red, a sharp wince carving across her face. Moments later, that pained grimace faded, slowly replaced by a faint, satisfied smile.
