That strong mommy’s only famous ’cause she cheated. No husband now, eh? No wonder she’s out here wandering." His laughter echoed sharply and loudly, followed by snide little chuckles from his teammates. Chasey and Adam both moved like they were ready to jump him, but Lethia, who was sitting right between them, reached out and held them back with a shake of her head. If anyone had the right to knock Victor’s teeth in, it was her. But there were two trainers crammed inside that truck. And candidates were strictly forbidden from throwing punches under supervision. Lethia turned her eyes toward Victor, gaze sharp as broken glass, her jaw clenched tight, calculating exactly what it would take to shut that devil’s mouth once and for all. Since last night, he’d been getting on her nerves. Then again, her existence alone always seemed to be enough reason for people to just hate her. Then Lethia smirked, betting on the little piece of memory she picked up the night before. "Bastard," she said coldly, her voice sharp and slicing through the air like a blade, eyes staring at Victor, pulling everyone’s attention inside the truck. He growled, his eyes blazing like he’d been taken over by pure fury. He lunged for Lethia, hand aiming for her throat—but thank the Goddess, Adam and Chasey were faster. They held him back just in time. The trainers jumped in without delay, barking out a warning and reminding everyone—no violence allowed. Victor was immediately penalised with a shot, so he just had two life bars left on his vest. The manual said that if we attacked each other with physical attacks, it would cost their life bar. Lethia just kept smirking while the air around her thickened with tension. "What’s got you so worked up?" she said, voice laced with mockery. "Was it true? I was only blurting out some teasing nonsense." No. That wasn’t a random tease. That was a calculated jab. A clean strike. But honestly? Who the hell cared? The way her so-called enemy squirmed under her control—his horror spilling across his face—that alone gave Lethia a rush of satisfaction. ’Whisney... I think I’m starting to love this power.’ Victor looked like he was about to snap, but one sharp glare from Thania held him back. He clenched his fists so hard they trembled—and that alone gave Lethia a satisfying thrill. A loud hum from the truck’s opening door shifted everyone’s attention. One by one, they climbed down, weapons in hand. In Squad B2, Adam distributed the weapons based on their designated roles. Handguns were easier for close-range combat, while rifles were for covering distance. Lethia was handed a rifle—her job was to protect those wielding handguns during the assault. Adam had assigned her to defense because it required less movement, which meant less energy spent. The building stood taller and grander in person than it had looked in yesterday’s footage. Six regular floors, and one final floor at the top—the destination penthouse. Lethia and Squad B2 moved quickly into position, standing by their designated elevator doors. According to the manual, each elevator would take them to a random floor. And no matter which floor they landed on, it wouldn’t be easier or harder. Every level held the same stakes. The cards were hidden, scattered across all the floors. As the doors slid open, Lethia and the rest of Squad B2 stepped into the lift. "I hope we just stop at the cafeteria’s floor," Lethia said. "Hm... I agree. But no matter where the elevator stops, as planned, we head there first," Adam added, chewing on one of his snacks. The rest of the team nodded in agreement. It was a plan Lethia had calculated the night before when studying the building’s blueprint. The manual had stated—if no one opened the penthouse door within the first eighteen hours after the panel activated, the game would extend for another six. Which meant they’d need a food stock to survive that long. Ding! Like fate tipped in their favor, the elevator stopped on the third floor, where the cafeteria was. Squad B2 burst out of the lift and sprinted down the corridor in search of the cafeteria. According to the game’s manual, there were two red cards hidden on this third floor. Following Adam’s orders, he and Chasey went off to hunt those cards, while Lethia, Rowan, and Flo were tasked with grabbing enough food to last the team 24 hours. Lethia nodded in understanding as they split at a junction, making sure their earbud comms were all synced. The manual didn’t specify which rooms the red cards were hidden in, so Adam and Chasey had to rummage through every single one. "We will come and join you too after we get the food," Lethia said, before breaking into a light jog toward the cafeteria. "Be CAREFUL!" Chasey half-yelled, getting nothing but a lazy wave from Lethia in return. At the cafeteria, Rowan and Flo immediately started ghatering meals, bottled water, and snacks, wrapping them in a tablecloth tied tight into a makeshift sack. Lethia moved to the corner of the room, where a door to the emergency staircase stood. That was their other exit route besides the lift. She stepped into the stairwell, peering up and down the shaft. No echoing footsteps. No signs anyone else had tried to use the emergency stairs to move between floors—yet. She noticed the door between the cafeteria and the stairwell had no lock. So she couldn’t block it off. Lethia had to save her hearing power for when shit really hit the fan—she could only use it five times, five minutes each. "Is this enough?" Flo’s question pulled Lethia’s attention back. She turned to see the neat pile of meal boxes, water bottles, and snacks. Yeah, it looked like more than enough to feed the five of them for the next 24 hours. Lethia only nodded and turned back toward the cafeteria when— PFFT! PFFT! PFFT! Three handgun shots echoed through the air, sharp and sudden. All three members of Squad B2 instinctively ducked, startled. Their eyes widened in horror as they glanced at one another, frozen for a heartbeat.
