Chapter 115: Impulsive Behaviour "She must be crazy!" Chasey’s firm voice cut through the silence inside the car. Lethia heard her clearly, but her mind was a mess, spiralling too fast to find a response. Her hand absentmindedly caressed her stomach, slow and gentle, while her gaze stayed fixed on the window, eyes watching the blur of the outside world. Lana’s eyes were so full filled with hatred and looked so empty. So blank. Why the hell did they feel like they were screaming for help instead? Was Lana possessed too? They were cousins after all, wasn’t it possible their family had some freakish predisposition to getting snatched by astral spirits? Wait... come to think of it, with how her mind had been so unusually quiet lately, Lethia couldn’t even be sure she was still possessed. But then again, remembering how her embrace calmed Renar’s fever, yeah, that bead must still be lodged somewhere in his body. Now what? Lethia shook her head, trying to clear the noise in her thoughts. "You okay, Queen?" Chasey asked, but before Lethia could answer, she added, "Ah... right, of course you’re not." Lethia turned to her, catching that awkward, unsure expression Chasey had been wearing since they left the restaurant. She gave a small smile and let out a long breath. "Acting audition?" She chuckled softly. "You sure are creative with your excuses. Thanks." Chasey turned her head, her eyes lighting up. "You’re smiling? Uh, yeah... I knew you’d like that." "Do you think she’s really crazy?" Lethia asked, just to be sure. "No normal person acts like that, Queen. But why are you so sure about her being pregnant?" "Because she is. She tied her hair in a bun. You know, pregnant she-wolves tend to get hot flushes. And that dry patch of skin around her neck told me enough." "Ah... is that why you were so calm around her? If it were me, I couldn’t stand even breathing the same air as that woman." "It shouldn’t be like this." Lethia turned her gaze to the window again. "Seeing her like that, so miserable, wrecked, I should be happy, shouldn’t I? But why the hell do I feel empty?" She looked back at Chasey, eyes serious. "Maybe... because I’m not the one who made her miserable. Yeah... that must be it." "You’re just... feeling sympathy because she’s pregnant, Queen. Maybe there’s some kinda emotional bond between pregnant women." Lethia and Chasey held each other’s gaze for a moment, then nodded at the same time, quietly validating their own hypotheses. And judging by the way she reacted when I mentioned Varrel had another woman, that brothel bill wasn’t a coincidence." "Want me to dig deeper?" "Hm... look into the brothel first." "The clinic, too?" "What are you planning to do, Queen?" Chasey asked, confused. "Going back home." A soft, sly smile crept onto Lethia’s lips. "I’m going home, Chasey." Chasey blinked. "You mean... the countryside?" Lethia nodded slowly. "I’ve got a feeling... Lana’s digging something out of me. Something I haven’t even realised yet." "Wouldn’t it be dangerous if you went to the countryside, Queen? Why not just ask for help from Tuffin’s men? You said Zeran Tuffin’s keeping you in the mansion because your stabber hasn’t been caught yet, right?" "Did you hear what Lana said? I’ll get stabbed again." Lethia squeezed her thumb and took a deep breath. "I can’t fully trust the ones claiming to protect me right now. This baby brought me to them, but..." She stopped short, hesitant to tell Chasey that she had a spirit fox inside her. "But?" Chasey pushed gently. "But I can’t rely on them all the time, can I?" Lethia decided to keep that part to herself. Chasey pressed her lips into a thin line, her gaze straight. "I don’t get why you’re making your life so damn complicated, Queen. You don’t have to trust them to make good use of them. What exactly are you so afraid of? You’ve gone through rejection and betrayal, and you’re still standing strong. So what if they betray you again later? And... are you even sure they’d be hurt if you ever betray them someday?" For someone who always looked so cheerful and full of jokes, Lethia hadn’t expected Chasey to carry such a grounded, rational side. "And why the hell are you complicating your life by not being honest with Adam, too? You’re scared, aren’t you? Scared he’ll reject you." Chasey blinked, caught off guard by what Lethia said. They locked eyes and ended up laughing at the messiness of their own lives. The car slowed to a stop in front of a house with a blue gate and a wide front yard. "Yes, sir, you can just stop here," Chasey said, giving the driver the signal to pull over. "See you at the Gala." Lethia gave her a parting wave just as Chasey stepped out, met only with a wide, blooming grin. "Queen, whatever you choose, just make sure it’s the most efficient way to get your ranch back, okay?" Chasey half-shouted as Lethia rolled down the window to wave. It made her chuckle softly—Chasey was starting to sound more and more like Adam. Once she arrived at Zeran’s mansion, Lethia directed the bodyguards to place her absurd number of shopping bags on the living room couch. Her eyes darted from one bag to the next, as if needing to convince herself not to regret this ridiculous, impulsive behaviour. Out of the fifteen bags, there was only one dress she could and would wear—an ivory one-shoulder dress now in her hand. Her fingers dug into the shopping bags, pulling out the dresses she had stomped on. She prayed the damage wasn’t that bad, so it could still be worn later. "I heard you caused quite a scene today. Are those the results?" Zeran’s deep bass voice made her flinch. She turned her head. He stood leaning against the wall, wearing a loose white shirt left unbuttoned until it gave a glimpse of his upper abs, his hair messily tousled in a way that was far from his usual clean appearance. And fuck, Lethia hated that.
