He never imagined someone like Renar, of all people, would look so utterly powerless in front of his own father. Jarreth spun his chair away from Renar and gazed out the window, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "That priest... was a fraud. I did everything he told me to, but in the end, my wife still died." He turned back around to face Caelum, his eyes cold. "It worked on my sister, even if only to prolong her life a few minutes after you were born. So no, I don’t think anything that bastard said could ever be proven." He opened a drawer, pulled out a stack of papers, and tossed them in front of Renar. "The Moonstone that shines red," he said, half-yelling. "He said the red energy it emitted would trick the curse. That it could mask the baby’s lycan spirit, make it seem human, just for a little while." A scornful smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Renar picked up the bundle and clutched it tightly in his hands. "So why did it fail?" he asked, his voice raw. "That’s why I lost my mind," Jarreth said, his grin stretching wider. "She died anyway. And all the babies did too." He let out a bitter laugh. "Should I be grateful that woman brought you back alive? Ha... you should’ve just died. That way, you won’t live in misery." Jarreth turned his chair again, gazing out at the rain with a look and smile that seemed... content. It made Renar sick to his stomach, fury clawing its way up his throat. He pushed himself to stand, his legs trembling beneath him. Callista stepped in and steadied him. "Can I find the priest with this?" he asked. Jarreth chuckled. "After my wife lost her life, he ran. Disappeared. So even if you do find him, there’s no guarantee his words will help you." "We don’t know that for sure." Without turning, still wearing that unsettling smile, Jarreth muttered, "Because every time it rains, I feel my wife come back to me. And you... You don’t deserve this happiness." Renar’s lips twitched. His fists trembled, the tightness in his chest nearly unbearable. If Callista hadn’t gripped his arm, he might’ve lost control. Without another word, the three of them left that suffocating room behind. The drizzle soaked the streets as Callista drove tensely. She glanced at Renar beside her, busy scanning the papers his father had handed over. "You should just rest. Those papers can wait." She reminded him. "I’m fine." "Liar." Caelum protested. "Do you know why I wanted to tag along?" he asked, staring blankly out the window. "Because I predicted it. And I want to understand why you would feel this way. But I can’t! I give up trying to understand. You’re right... my father’s better." Caelum closed his eyes, but a pang of guilt surged within him. "Ugh... I hate that I can’t hurt you. Sorry, I take that back!" Caelum thumped his fist on his chest, sighing repeatedly. Caelum hated pain, especially the kind he couldn’t explain, that linked him, Renar, and Zeran in a tangled mess. Maybe he could take Zeran off his worry list, since he never felt pain from that man. "This Moonstone... it should be easy to create one that shines red now. We have all the advanced technology." Renar ignored Caelum completely, his eyes gleaming with bitter excitement after reading the papers. Callista shook her head and sighed. "Do you love her that much?" she asked. "Yes, of course!
