Lethia stared into Zeran’s eyes with a look that screamed, ’Touch me and say hi to your ancestors.’ But it wasn’t really him she loathed. She despised how his stare stripped her of power, leaving her no room to fight back. She hated how her emotions cracked wide open right in front of him. "Looks like all that shock hit you hard. Take your time. Rest well tonight," he said, like a dictator fresh off a coup. "Talk to my butler if you need anything." Lethia didn’t respond. She turned away sharply, refusing to let him see the tears that had already spilled down her cheeks. BRAAKKK! A deafening crash exploded through the hallway—something heavy had slammed hard into something else. Lethia and Zeran both snapped their heads toward the noise. "ZERAN TUFFIN! GET OUT!" A man’s voice roared. Lethia’s fingers twitched, fidgeting. Her jaw clenched tight—she knew that voice too fucking well. Just as Zeran stepped forward to leave, Lethia caught his arm. "That’s Renar." Her wide eyes were the eyes of a girl terrified of getting caught doing something wrong. "What will you tell him?" she asked, voice shaking in panic. "Tell him you’ll be living here from now," he answered with a steady, confident voice. Lethia’s brows drew tight. "Who said I’d live here?" "Bold of you to assume I’ll let you go back to that kid’s penthouse," Zeran smirked, sharp and smug. Lethia clicked her tongue. If she kept pushing, he wasn’t going to budge an inch. ’What the hell should she do now?’ "Don’t tell him about the baby’s father yet. We don’t know anything for sure until the genetic test is done." "So you’re agreeing to take the test?" "Hm. I’ll take it. And... let me be the one to tell him I’m staying here tonight," she coaxed. It was the only way to prevent unwanted violence tonight. She didn’t want another round of chaos like when Renar went head-to-head with Caelum over her last time. Lethia walked down the spiral staircase toward the main door after changing her clothes. No way in hell was she going to let Renar see her walk out of this house in sleepwear. She counted each step, forcing her thoughts into order as she tried to figure out what to say to him. A sharp sting gnawed at her chest, making her fidget with her thumbs. From the beginning, she honestly didn’t give a damn if Renar or Caelum thought she was a bitch toying with their feelings. That wasn’t the issue. The problem was, she still needed them. Both of them. Because of the fox’s beads lodged inside their bodies. If they started hating her, or worse, refused to see her again, it would screw everything up. And where the hell was that damn fox anyway? She clicked her tongue in frustration, still unable to reach Whisney after her heat spiked earlier during the game. As the automatic door slid open, she spotted Renar, hands on his hips, being held back by a few bodyguards. She did wonder why he didn’t just break straight into the house. No way those guards were stronger than him. But she was glad for that. His furious glare softened the second it landed on her. "Why are you here?" he growled, his tone tight, like he was barely holding his anger back. "Renar..." The men in black suits stepped aside as she passed. "I’m sorry I didn’t tell you," she said. "It was all so sudden. I ran into Zeran after the game, and we had something to discuss." Lethia clutched the side of her pants, grounding herself, trying to stop her tongue from slipping. "Discuss?" he echoed, doubtful. His tone was flat, almost detached. "Yeah... you know, since my team won the game, I had to keep my promise to my friends. Adam wants to work under Zeran, so I needed to talk to him about that." Renar looked visibly calmer now, his breathing steady. But Lethia could still see the vein on his temple twitching, like he was gritting his teeth behind that calm. He studied her eyes too intently. So much that Lethia flinched. He’d never looked at her like that before. ’Why isn’t he saying anything? Does he know I’m lying?’ "And... you remember Zeran once said he wanted to collect a debt, right?" Lethia let out a light chuckle to smooth over her act. "I was curious about that, too. Figured I should clear it up with him. You know me, I hate to be indebted to anyone." She smiled softly, trying to ease the tension. Trying to make him believe her. But truthfully, she just wanted to calm her own heartbeat that kept racing too fast. Yet Renar’s brows only drew in deeper. His gaze dropped to the grass at their feet, like he was searching for something hidden in the dirt. Then he let out a deep breath and lifted his cold eyes back to her. "Are you done now?" he asked, voice freezing her to the bone. "Ah... yeah... almost," she muttered. "Just a little bit more. So, you can go home first, okay? I probably won’t be back at your penthouse tonight. My team wants to throw a celebration party for the win, so... Chasey’s gonna pick me up, and I’ll be staying at her place tonight." Perfect. Lethia had used a similar excuse back when she fought with her father and spent the night at Teressa’s place. She was sure Renar would buy it this time, especially with Chasey’s name thrown in as cover. But then, a low, heavy chuckle slipped from Renar’s lips as he dropped his head slightly. "You’re so funny. How do you think I knew you were here?" A painful smirk curled his lips, and disappointment burned in his gaze. He had a point. Before she even started spinning her lie, she should’ve asked him how he knew she was here in the first place. "H—How?" she croaked, swallowing hard, her heartbeat hammering against her ribs. "Why did you lie?" His voice was frigid, sharp like a blade of ice sinking into her flesh. Did it even matter anymore? Now that he knew she lied, soon enough, he’d find out why she lied. What was it she feared so much that she chose to deceive him? Was it really just about the beads? Her eyes locked with his, and behind his gaze, she caught a distance she feared was growing. No. She hadn’t lied because of the beads. She lied because she didn’t want Renar to get the wrong idea. She didn’t want him to hate her. Because Lethia knew Whisney would find a way to take that bead back, no matter what. She pressed her lips tightly and clenched her jaw. Her connection with these lycans was nothing more than mutual need. So it shouldn’t get complicated with feelings. She hoped so. "I had my reasons," she paused, her voice tight. "And... whatever I did with him is not your concern, isn’t it?"
