Chapter 14 - One Good Reason Renar was left shocked—his breath ragged, his entire body boiling with frustration, his urge ripped away without warning. "Wh—what are you talking about?" Lethia swallowed hard. "I—I yelled for us to stop." Renar's brows knitted, his jaw tight. "Are you even listening to yourself? When the fuck did you tell me to stop?" "During all that, when we—" She froze, the word kissed catching in her throat. "I screamed in my mind for us to stop, but—" Her voice wavered. She tore her gaze away, suddenly ashamed of her own nonsense. Her fingers curled into her palms, trembling. What the hell just happened? She had kissed him. No—forced herself on him. And yet... through every searing, breath-stealing moment, she had been screaming inside for it to stop. But her body hadn't listened. It had moved on its own, reckless, desperate— Like a shameless, slut-dazed doll. Renar pushed himself up from the floor, drawing in a deep breath before approaching Lethia with measured steps. His sharp gaze studied her face—the confusion in her eyes wasn't feigned. Taking another breath, he forced himself to steady his composure, though his heart was still hammering violently against his ribs. Once he felt somewhat in control of himself, he closed the distance, grasping her shoulders and guiding her back down despite her weak attempts to resist. "I need to examine you first." Retrieving a small penlight, he checked her pupils, considering the possibility of neuropsychiatric complications from the coma. If that was the case, it would explain why she'd acted so erratically. But her pupils reacted normally, a sign that her brain function was intact. "It seems you're experiencing post-traumatic amnesia from your brief coma," he said, adjusting her blanket. His eyes flicked to her trembling hands. "Your surgery went well, and your baby is safe. We managed to extract the poison that came from the—" He hesitated. The dagger. The word clung to his throat like something he couldn't swallow. He was afraid if he said it, she might spiral further. "For now, we'll be monitoring your incision and motor response over the next few days. And..." He exhaled sharply. "I'm truly sorry about the kiss earlier. I shouldn't have indulged myself like that and crossed the line. Forgive me." He lied! Renar didn't feel sorry at all. Not even close. What he felt was anger. A deep, seething anger that burned hotter the longer he looked at her. She had woken the beast inside him—only to toy with it. And now, here he was, forced to swallow it back down. If he let himself, he'd take his damn compensation for the emotional damage right now. She was a patient. A patient who had barely escaped death. So he forced himself to believe that this... this thing between them was nothing more than a traumatic reaction from a coma patient. "My phone... have you seen my phone?" Panic edged into her voice. Renar exhaled. "Do you remember what happened to you?" "Uh... Holae Street..." The words caught in her throat. "My phone... I need it." Renar sighed. "Your cousin, Lana Ashcroft, took it. We called her as your emergency contact." Lethia's eyes widened. "Where is she?" Panic and relief crashed together inside her. "I don't know. You were alone when I came in to check your wounds." Renar's voice was indifferent as he clipped a vitals monitor onto her chest. Lethia stiffened as his fingers brushed against her skin, sending a ripple of awkward tension between them. Just as Renar focused on the holographic display, the door to her room swung open, shattering the silence between them. "Lana!" Lethia nearly jumped, relief flooding her mind as she caught sight of her cousin stepping inside. A weight lifted from her chest. Finally, someone familiar. Someone she trusted. She was about to leap into Lana's arms, but Renar shot her a sharp look, silently warning her to stay put. "Hey... you're awake?" Lana gave her a soft smile. Renar, having finished his examination, detached the monitoring equipment and excused himself, leaving the room. Lethia clung tightly to Lana, but all she received in return was a stiff pat on the shoulder. The coldness in Lana's response didn't stop her from speaking her mind. "Do you have any idea how hard it is to be in front of you like this?" Heat burned behind Lethia's eyes, but she refused to let herself appear weak. There was too much to fix to afford that luxury. "I know, right? It should be difficult." Lana's bitter smile sent a ripple of unease through Lethia. She hated being a nuisance to others. But right now, Lana was her last hope to sort this mess out.
