Chapter 103: Her First Task "No, he’s not home," Lethia answered as she moved to sit down. She caught a flicker of disappointment on Adam’s face. "So, Queen... all of that is true?" Chasey whispered as she leaned in closer. "Chasey, just talk like usual. It’s fine. No one would care about what we’re saying even if you start howling right here." Chasey cleared her throat. "Um, alright." Lethia chuckled at Chasey’s behaviour. Over the past four days, she had already explained everything that had happened to her in their group chat. She couldn’t attend the Executive Aide orientation, of course, thanks to the madness of Caelum’s rabid fans who were still roaming around Lykon Haven trying to hunt her down. But that was nothing more than a swarm of flies, annoying, but harmless. Once she was inside Lykon Haven, she’d be safe. "Anyway, that bitch Thania’s been pestering me like hell, Queeenn... Ugh! Yesterday, she cornered me in the bathroom and started interrogating me about you. She even tried to snatch my phone to look for your name. Thank God Adam stepped in and rescued me." Even though you’ve got a whole army of haters because of Caelum’s fans, you gained loads of new followers too, Queen. Ahh... I’m so happy," Chasey said, scrolling through her phone with delight. "What Queen? If you said that just because Zeran’s running for the King position, I haven’t even decided whether I’m going to marry him or not," Lethia snapped. But the silence and the curious stares from both Chasey and Adam, made her feel uneasy. "You said he’s the father," Adam said. "Shouldn’t you two be getting married?" Lethia froze at Adam’s words. Her temples throbbed with confusion, unsure whether she even wanted to answer that damn question. She sighed heavily. "I’ve been married once. And it ended in betrayal. Do you really think marriage is that simple?" "Yes." "Yes." Chasey and Adam answered in unison with such ease. Lethia scowled, clearly pissed. "Then you two can try to marry each other!" she snapped, rubbing her temples in frustration. "Queen, why are you being so emotional? Where’s my sharp-tongued, sassy logic Queen?" Chasey teased, feigning offense. "All your problems would be solved just by marrying Zeran, right? Get married, have a baby, live a comfy life. No need to break your head over revenge. Sooner or later, the ones who disrespected you will have to bow, anyway. I’m sure Zeran’s gonna win the throne," Adam said, stabbing her straight in the chest with his insufferable logic. "That’s not what I want..." Lethia bit back. "Is it because of love?" Adam mocked. "God, this is exactly why I hate countryside folks." "In Ashenhold, you can get married and fall in love with whoever you want at the same damn time, Queen. Got a fated mate? Fine, okay. Want someone else instead? That’s fine too, as long as everyone’s in on it and gives their consent," Chasey explained passionately, her mouth full of biscuits from the tray. Lethia frowned in disbelief. "Do you guys seriously live like that?" Adam nodded without hesitation. "For centuries." Lethia’s eyes blinked wide, completely thrown by what she’d just heard. She heard it before. But hearing it now, straight from the mouths of those actually living it, made her stomach churn. But hadn’t she also been playing with fire since arriving in Ashenhold? Lethia shook her head, trying to slap away the images clawing at her mind. "Well, maybe I am old-fashioned. But this isn’t about love, fate, or even my baby. This is about what I want, and marriage isn’t on that list. Anyway, I need help." She shut the topic down with a sharp breath. There were far more important things. "Oh, finally, the Queen hands out her first task. I like this." Chasey arched her brows up and down, grinning widely like a devil. "Since I don’t know if I can keep working as Executive Aide for now, I need both of you to get me Varrel Quinnel’s full campaign schedule. And with his private schedule, too." Her request made Chasey and Adam glance at each other. "So basically you’re asking us to work under his party?" Chasey asked, brow raised. "Chasey, how the hell are you a gossip girl with a brain that slow?" Adam teased with a lopsided smirk. Chasey pouted, letting out a weak whimper. Lethia tilted her head, curiosity tugging at her thoughts. Had Chasey told Adam she felt the pull of a fated mate toward him? Adam leaned back and crossed his legs, sipping his tea with that casual elegance of someone already ten steps ahead. "Don’t worry, we’ll find a way to get that. But—" "I already asked Zeran to list you both as aides for Tuffin men. Rest easy." Lethia cut him off before he could spit out whatever came after that ’but’. Adam simply answered her with a faint, knowing smile. *** Zeran was scrolling through his tablet while sitting on the sofa, his gaze occasionally drifting toward the woman lying weakly in the bed across from him. An IV tube was hooked near her bandaged wrist, the beeping machines around her faint but steady. "Zeran..." Her hoarse, fragile voice pulled his eyes up. Zeran didn’t respond. Instead, he pressed the intercom button, summoning a nurse to inform them that the patient named Lindsey had regained consciousness. "I knew you would come to me." The woman gave a faint, bitter smile. "Of course. A promise is a promise," Zeran replied, stepping closer to the bed, his hands buried in his pockets, jaw tight as stone. "But I need to break that now." "This is the last time I come to you. Next time you pull this show, don’t expect me to come unless it’s your funeral." His voice was cold, slicing through the air like glass. He held her dazed gaze with a stare that burned through the haze in her eyes, making sure she felt the weight of his words. He was done, and this time, he meant it.
