Chapter 44: Red Scarf Lethia swallowed hard but still tried to keep her composure as Caelum walked into the room. "You... why did you bring me here?" Lethia felt strange this time. She was usually never this tense—or this damn jittery—even around handsome actors. "Why? Because it’s the only way I can talk to you without interruption." Caelum walked over to the sideboard and opened its cabinet. "Ah..." He glanced over his shoulder at Lethia. "I had my doctor check on you earlier. And he said you’re fine. Just exhausted. He gave you a vitamin shot. Your baby’s fine too." Then, after pulling out a black velvet box from the cabinet, Caelum stood still for a moment. He took a deep breath like he wanted to savour every damn inhale. "You know how divine your scent is?" He turned around and walked towards her, that meaningful smile curling on his lips. Lethia clutched the bedsheet at the edge of the mattress. Talk of scent made her pulse stutter. Every step Caelum took toward her felt like slow motion—like the ones she’d always seen in dramas. "Why? Does it make you crazy too?" She tried to steady her nerves. Caelum suddenly frowned, pouting. He moved swiftly, sitting beside her on the edge of the bed and leaning his face closer—close enough that her reflex was to jerk her head back. His eyes searched hers, like he was digging for something only she could answer. Lethia tried to hold her breath. With how close he was, she could catch the scent of his skin—masculine, with a clean aqua citrus note, like wet grass after rain in a strawberry field. A scent that calmed her... and made her feel strangely safe. "Did Renar go crazy and shove himself on you?" Caelum asked, still wearing that ridiculous pouty expression. Lethia chuckled, though she almost lost it completely and burst out laughing at how childish Caelum was acting. "N—No..." Caelum let out a relieved sigh and pulled himself slightly away from her. "You don’t need to worry. I can control myself better than the other two Tuffin men. Not as beastly as them—who get hard just from a damn scent. Maybe ’cause I don’t have Tuffin last name." Lethia, whose heartbeat had finally returned to something normal, let out a soft chuckle. "I wish I could be worry-free too... knowing you could clone yourself into two." She really shouldn’t have brought up the cloning talk. That was obviously gonna plant some wild idea in his head—and her head too. Caelum smirked. "Now that’s... the kind of fun I wish I could show you later." She could hear the fox giggling wickedly at Caelum’s line, and it made her stomach churn with nerves. Lethia’s arm brushed against his as they sat pressed together. She started thinking—how the hell could she get close enough to transfer the fox’s bead into Caelum without making it intimate... "What do you want to talk to me about?" Lethia asked. "Ah, right... this. I wanted to give you this." Caelum placed the velvet box onto her lap. The soft texture of the velvet brushed against her palm as her fingers explored the outside of the box. She turned to Caelum with a questioning look, and he gestured for her to open it. Lethia frowned when she saw a golden hairpin waiting inside. She picked it up, confused, and looked back at Caelum. "Don’t you remember?" he asked, noticing the puzzled look on her face. "You should take everything out first," he added. Her gaze shifted back to the box. She reached in and pulled out a neatly folded red scarf. As she unfolded it, her stare froze. Her name was embroidered at the edge in delicate stitching. "This..." She lost her words. "Do you remember now?" Silence. Her right hand, still holding the hairpin, clenched into a fist, and her grip on the scarf trembled. "You... How?" She kept staring at the scarf in her hands, dazed, completely at a loss for words. The dream from earlier flashed back to her. The scarf—a gift from her father that gone for more than a decade was now right there in her hands. Even during his funeral, she’d thought of this scarf... but couldn’t recall where or how she lost it. It was the first present her father ever gave her directly, during their trip to Ashenhold. Before that, he’d always been too busy to celebrate her birthday with her. The gifts had always come through her nanny. Lethia turned to Caelum, her eyes locked on him like she was trying to dig out the deepest fragments of her memory. And then, faint but clear enough, a hazy image of a nosy little boy who once helped her at the playground flickered in her mind. Sage green eyes. That sweet little dimple. Only the hair was different now. "You changed your hair..." Lethia’s tone softened, her lips curled into a warm smile. "Finally, you remember me, right?" She nodded, still smiling softly, warm and full of something that nearly broke him. "Oh, thank God! Do you even know what I’ve been through trying to find you all this time? I even became a top star just so I could wear this on some fancy occasion, hoping you’d see it in the media and come find me. Yeah... I was that desperate. Couldn’t find you anywhere in Ashenhold—" Lethia cut him off by throwing her arms around him before she could think. Caelum froze. She still couldn’t believe it. Her father’s words—that the scarf would return to her hands someday—had actually come true. She barely heard Caelum’s rambling earlier. Her arms were wrapped tight around him, not out of impulse, but from a heart bursting with gratitude. Then she pulled away, gently placed one hand on his cheek, and said, "Thank you... Thank you for keeping this scarf safe. Thank you, Cael..." The sound of his name on her lips—Cael—sent his heart thundering in his chest. That smile of hers, that warmth, those tears brimming in her eyes made Caelum clench his jaw, lean in closer, and kiss the tear away from her cheek. Then he drew back just to give one firm pull to the nape of her neck, and their lips met in a fierce, breath-stealing kiss.
