Chapter 120: Dream "Do you love me?" a woman’s voice echoed. "I’m all yours..." the man confessed. "Will you burn them all?" she pressed on. "I will bring hell itself as long as I can be with you," another man replied. "Would you die for me?" she demanded. "I’d kill myself even in the afterlife if it means I get to be with you forever," the last man submitted. Amidst a raging blaze that licked the sky, a woman lay weakly in a man’s arms. His hand gripped the dagger, stabbing straight into her chest, piercing her heart. But he didn’t pull it out, he drove it deeper. Pressing it in with merciless force until blood spilled from her mouth. Tears streamed down his face as his trembling hand shoved the blade further. "W–why?" she choked out, her voice broken and shaking. "Don’t forgive me," the man rasped, his voice splintering with pain. His eyes were drenched in torment. The woman clawed wildly at his neck, at his arms, screaming without sound as he ground the dagger deeper into her chest. "I... I—ha–te... y–you..." she gasped, her breath shallow, her chest heaving. Her pupils dilated. With a bitter smile, the man yanked the dagger from her chest in one brutal pull, blood spraying across his face in a violent gush. "I love you," he said. And just before everything went black, she saw him raise the dagger high, then drive it straight into his own heart. The surge of heat in her chest jolted Lethia awake. She sat up in bed with a gasp, her whole body trembling. Blood rushed so fiercely through her veins that she could feel the pulse pounding in her head, leaving her dizzy, spinning in disoriented confusion. Her mouth parted slightly, and she tried to breathe in air. Her chest rose and fell with each frantic breath as she fought to steady her emotions. She cleared her throat, feeling how dry and raw it had become. Her gaze darted around until it landed on a bottle of mineral water beside the bed. She grabbed it and gulped it down fast, the cool liquid dripping from the corner of her lips. ’What kind of dream was that? Why the hell did I see something so monstrous?’ Lethia wiped the cold sweat trickling down from her forehead to her neck with the back of her hand. She tried to ground herself. The sunlight slipping past the curtains made it clear that it was already a new day. She pushed the blanket aside and swung her legs off the bed, but the moment she tried to stand, her knees buckled. Her legs trembled, so she had to sit back down at the edge of the bed. The dream had felt too real. The faces in it were blurred, impossible to recall clearly, yet whatever they’d felt—rage, grief, longing—she could feel so vividly that she hadn’t even noticed her cheeks had stiffened from dried tears. Lethia tried again to stand, but her body still trembled. She sank back down, gently rubbing her belly, scared that if she pushed herself any further, she might collapse and put the baby at risk. She reached for the intercom and pressed the button. "Yes, Miss? Can I help you?" "Vonda... I need help. Can you come here? My... my legs are trembling. I... I need to pee." She had never experienced a dream that felt too real before. And though a part of her was dying to know what it meant, she hoped to never see anything like that in her sleep again. *** "Why are you here?" Renar asked Caelum, who was already waiting by his car. "I know you’re going to see your father," Caelum replied. "And?" "We’ve got the same goal, don’t we? To save my beautiful Queen. So..." Caelum shrugged, "I want to tag along." Renar let out a deep sigh. "And you?" he turned to Callista. "I need to make sure you two don’t bicker and punch each other the whole way," she said casually. The three of them entered the car and drove off. "Have you two asked your father yet?" Renar asked. "He’s hopeless. What would you expect from a womanizer like him?" Callista, seated beside him, replied sharply. "I don’t even understand why Mother married him for love," she went on. "He never mourned or even mentioned my birth mother." Callista leaned her head against one hand, her elbow propped on the car door. Renar glanced at her, noticing how somber she looked. "You asked him about your birth mother?" "Yeah... he just said they were in love, she got pregnant, and died giving birth to a lycan daughter. Then he moved on. Met Caelum’s mother. Fell in love again. Lost her too. Maybe by now he’s lost another one, and who knows, I might have even more siblings." "I don’t think so," Caelum cut in. "His last movie was a big hit, and during the promo tour, he kept going on about how much he missed his late wives." Callista let out a breath. "You really look like him. Even followed in his footsteps. If only you’d inherited Mother’s good traits too." "I’m sorry, I never got to meet her. Not as lucky as you, knowing her for three years," Caelum answered bitterly. Caelum’s father had married Janeth Tuffin when Callista was four years old. Sometimes, he couldn’t help but envy the fact that Callista had at least felt his mother’s love, even if only for a few years. "You should be grateful you could still catch a glimpse of her through Callista," Renar snapped at him. "Don’t whine. I can’t even ask anyone how my mother felt when she was carrying me." The mood fell into silence. Renar hadn’t meant to drag everyone down with him, but the thought of meeting his father again had sent his emotions into a spiral since this morning. Jarreth and Janeth Tuffin were twins, children of their grandfather and his first wife, Sophia. Everyone knew Renar was the most neglected Tuffin man when it came to parental love. He glanced at the rearview mirror, catching Caelum staring blankly out the window. Even though none of them had ever known the warmth of their birth mothers, Renar still envied Caelum and Callista for being able to hold a proper conversation with their father. His foot pressed harder on the gas, the car picking up speed just as light rain began to drizzle on the road. "Renar, stop. It’s raining. Let me drive," Callista ordered. Renar jerked the steering wheel toward the side of the road and slammed the brakes, the tyres screeching as the car skidded slightly. His chest rose and fell, trying to calm the storm in his breath. "Are you okay?" Callista asked, her voice laced with concern. Renar just nodded. He had always hated the rain. It reminded him too much of those childhood punishments when his father threw him out of the house in the middle of a storm. His father said Renar had to understand the pain his mother went through giving birth to him on a rainy night. That it was his fault she died.
