Chapter 89: Gravity Lethia stared at the three red cards in her hand. She glanced over at the single red cards held by Adam and Rowan. In that moment, she realized that the three of them were rivals and could betray each other. Rowan’s fingers gently brushed through Flo’s hair as he whispered something to her. A flicker of doubt stirred within Lethia. She bit her lower lip, trying to push her suspicions away. Even now, she saw Adam talking with some of the Squad B3 members. Her heart raced. What if one of them decided to turn on her? If the worst-case scenario happened, Lethia had to strike first. She had three red cards, and taking two more wouldn’t be much of an issue, right? She shook her head, trying to rid herself of those dark thoughts. If she had five red cards right now, she’d feel more assured. Then she could focus on getting the blue cards for Chasey and Flo. That thought led her to approach Adam. "Adam, I think I—" "Let’s go find the two blue cards and end this nonsense game soon," Adam’s firm voice cut through her words, and she felt a slight relief, deciding to hold back what she was going to say. She’d wanted to suggest it would be better for her to carry the red cards, but his invitation made her feel certain Adam wouldn’t betray her. Even though she still wasn’t sure about Rowan, she pushed the thought aside. The three of them quickly set off to search for the blue cards. It had been half an hour since the search started. Lethia had split off from Adam and Rowan, deciding to check out the second floor. So far, there was no sign of anyone stealing red cards from each other. Well, maybe it was because only two teams were out here, and each team seemed loyal. She hoped so, at least. As she stepped onto the second floor, Lethia bumped into Arnold from Team Thania. Their eyes locked, Arnold looking surprised as hell to see her. She instantly gripped her vest pocket, worried that he would snatch her red cards. In this game, there was no paintball gunfire, and they had to take the red cards hand in hand. Well, if Arnold did try to steal her cards, she’d make sure he got the straight pain-ball from her feet. But Arnold just brushed past her, disappearing into the elevator. Lethia let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding and quickly got back to hunting for blue cards in each room. ’Wait, Arnold’s already been here, hasn’t he? What if he’s taken all the blue cards from this floor?’ Lethia clicked her tongue, weighing whether it was even worth searching this floor. Sadly enough, the earbud comm was no longer used—thanks to the new rules, they weren’t technically a team required to communicate anymore, so she couldn’t ask Adam or Rowan either. Lethia scanned a few rooms, and her eyes landed on the spacious balcony. She dragged her feet toward it. At first, she doubted there’d be any blue cards hidden out in the open area like this. But after pacing back and forth between the balcony’s small garden, something shiny caught the morning sun and glinted in the corner of her eye. When she reached down and picked it up, it was a blue card. A grin spread wide across her face. She’d actually found one. With a light step, she turned to head back inside the office. But just as she turned her heels, her smile faded, replaced by a startled look as she spotted Rowan standing in the doorway of the balcony, walking toward her slowly. "Ah... hi." Lethia slipped past the knot in her chest, instantly regretting why that "hi" had ever left her lips. "You found one?" he asked, flat and cold. Lethia gave a small nod. "Hm... have you?" Rowan smirked. "Of course I have. Right in front of me. Not just a blue card... but three red ones, too." "What do you mean?" Her face turned pale. "I mean exactly what I said. And you’re not stupid enough not to understand it." Lethia cursed under her breath. Her gut had warned her—and it hadn’t betrayed her. So why didn’t she listen? But even if she had... what could she have done? Physically, she didn’t stand a chance if Rowan came at her. She drew a long breath. "So... how are you going to steal it from me? You gonna hurt me?" "I won’t, if you just give me the cards. Come on, let’s not waste time. No one has to get hurt." She stepped back as he moved forward. "We’d save more time if you weren’t doing this in the first place. Why? Do you hate me?" Her voice cracked on the last word. Rowan chuckled darkly. "Maybe... I loathe you. You keep acting like you’re the smartest among us when you’re nothing but an adulteress. I don’t even know how you managed to get here in the first place. The rumors must be true, that you fucked someone high up. Well, no surprise, for a whore like you." He paused, eyes gleaming. "I pity your child, having to grow up as a bastard from a who—" SLAAPPP!!! The slap cracked through the air as Lethia’s hand struck Rowan’s cheek. "Shut your damn mouth!" Her breaths came hard, her voice trembling under the weight of fury she could barely contain. Rowan’s tongue rolled against his cheek before a slow, smug smirk curled on his lips, like he was enjoying her rage. "You hit me first," he said calmly. In a blink, Rowan seized her arm, his hand diving toward the pocket of her vest where the red cards were hidden. Lethia struggled to break free, clutching her pocket tightly and clawing at his hand as she fought him off. The scuffle drove her steps backward until her heel hit the edge of the balcony, where only a shin-high railing stood between her and the drop. Her balance wavered. Rowan’s grip tightened, and she shoved against his chest in desperation, trying to push him away—anything to get them away from the edge. But his body was too solid, too heavy to move with her strength alone. So she sank her teeth into his arm. She bit down hard—her teeth piercing skin, digging deep into flesh—and Rowan howled in pain, instinctively slapping her across the face. A sharp sting exploded across her cheek, followed by a dizzy ringing in her ears. Her knees buckled, her balance snapped. Her foot twisted in the wrong direction, and in a blink, her body went weightless. The world tilted. Gravity yanked her down without mercy.
