Chapter 41: Wild Card Lethia knew well they both thought she was joking, judging by how Chasey and Adam burst out laughing with condescending amusement. "You both don’t believe me, do you?" Lethia asked. Their laughter slowly died down when they saw her dead-serious face with her eyes staring out the window in silence. "Oh... we’re sorry. But if you really know Renar Tuffin, why don’t you just become a VIP Aide straight away?" Adam asked, scepticism dripping from his tone. "Wutss.. NO! She can’t! And no one can," Chasey jumped in fast. "Even if you were the mistress of our current King, you still wouldn’t be able to get into the parliament without passing the fair play test as an Executive Aide first." "What? Really? Why the hell not?" Adam frowned. Seemed like Lethia didn’t even need to ask Callista. Her hunch was right, Chasey was clearly the busybody who had the entire gossip archive in her brain. Lethia shot her a glance, waiting for an answer. "Because of fair play," Chasey replied with a generic answer that clearly didn’t satisfy either Adam or Lethia. Sensing their disappointment, Chasey gave a sly smile, like she’d already expected that reaction. "According to the info going around, Lykon Haven doesn’t want brainless members. Just like their motto, they don’t want werewolves who rely solely on their physical strength or supernatural powers," she added. "But don’t most Lycans still overuse their supernatural ability anyway?" Adam asked. "That’s... something I haven’t got the scoop on yet." Chasey tapped her finger on her glass. "Point is, you guys know this already, right? Lycans have evolved into something way more civilised over the years. And well... since their numbers are few but they still dominate every win in election, they want their parliament members to be as smart and civilised as they are." Chasey blinked proudly, clearly pleased with the little lecture she’d just delivered. "Hah! In the end, they still need regular werewolves but hate their brute, brainless nature. What a fair play hypocrisy," Adam mocked bitterly. Lethia let out a lazy chuckle. "That’s exactly what fair play means. You gotta have a brain, even if you end up in their bed. Well, based on some research, to satisfy someone in bed, you’ve got to strategize it. Fair enough... fair enough..." Her sarcastic jab made both Adam and Chasey whip their heads toward her and burst into loud laughter. Lethia didn’t mean to be funny, even if this whole fair play bullshit sounded like a comedy sketch. She wasn’t the type to laugh freely around people she barely knew, but this time, she needed it. An informant like Chasey and a quick-witted bachelor like Adam were exactly what she needed to survive in Lykon Haven, with all its intrigue and never-ending drama. "So what about your deal? Should we actually believe it?" Adam asked, still catching his breath from laughing. Lethia smirked and pulled out her phone. A moment later, the video call ringtone echoed from the speaker, and the three of them fell silent, eyes glued to the screen, wondering if the person on the other end would pick up. Lethia, nibbling at the corner of her thumb, wasn’t entirely sure either. Renar had mentioned being swamped lately at the hospital. But— A moment later, the image of a man with tousled brown hair and glasses filled her screen. His handsome face looked a little tired, but the soft smile obscure it. "Hmm? Is everything okay?" Renar’s baritone voice and that faint smile of his made Lethia’s heart skip a beat. And she wasn’t alone—both people beside her looked equally stunned, their faces frozen in disbelief. Lethia forced herself to keep her expression cool. "Of course. What could possibly be wrong?" ’Wait—why the hell am I being so awkward replying to him? No, no, get a grip.’ "I made some friends. Say hello to them." She quickly regained control of her expression and turned the phone around, showing Chasey and Adam’s faces. The two of them stammered, bowing their heads with the most awkward smiles ever. Lethia only showed them for a few seconds before yanking the phone back without giving them any chance to actually speak. "Okay, just wanted to show you that. Bye." She hung up right away before Renar could get another word in. She had no idea why her heart was thundering over a simple call. They’d literally just talked casually in the car that morning. But she didn’t have time to obsess over her heartbeat, especially when the two people next to her looked like they’d just had their souls sucked out. "Who did I just see on that call...?" Chasey asked, looking absolutely lifeless. "The most famous plastic surgeon. Renar Tuffin." Adam replied, gulping hard, his face just as soulless as hers. "Whaaaaattttt—?" Chasey didn’t exactly scream, but her tone was dramatic enough to draw glances from across the cafeteria. "Oh girl! Lethia! Mommy!" Chasey grabbed Lethia’s arm, eyes sparkling like she’d just been baptised in luxury. "I knew it! The moment I signed up to your fan page, I felt it—like I was gonna be blessed!" She frantically shook Lethia’s arm and threw herself into a giddy hug. "I’ll sign up right now, then!" Adam whipped out his phone, his thumb tapping the screen with eager determination. Lethia struggled to free herself from Chasey’s clingy hug. "Whoa... whoa... calm down..." Her grimacing face did nothing to dim Chasey’s ecstatic smile. She was so thrilled, her body started bouncing instinctively in place. "Oh my gosh... Oh my god... does that mean you know all the Tuffin men?!" Lethia had no intention of answering that truthfully. Just because she needed Chasey didn’t mean she trusted her yet. "I said Renar Tuffin was my attending doctor when I was at Terenian Hospital. So no, I don’t know the others on a personal level." At least she wasn’t exactly lying. "Wait—what does a plastic surgeon have anything to do with a pregnant werewolf?" Adam’s sharp brain clearly wasn’t taking a day off. "He was one of the doctors handling my case because I’ve got a scar on my stomach. He only treated that." "Ahh... doesn’t matter why he treated you. What matters is, you’re mingling with him. Mingling with the elite Tuffin bloodline." Chasey’s voice stayed fired up, her eyes practically glittering with joy. At this rate, Lethia was almost certain Chasey wasn’t just a Caelum fangirl—she was a certified Tuffin Men addict. Adam finally put his phone down, eyes locking onto Lethia now that he was done. "So... what do you need us to do?" he asked. "Hm? Do what?" Chasey blinked, totally clueless. "Chasey, our Stiletto Queen clearly wants something from us," Adam grinned. "Since she played her wild card this soon."
