Chapter 86: Invitation

Words : 1032 Updated : Sep 12th, 2025
Vacuse blinked in surprise. "All that I hold dear?" He smiled. How should he explain that he had nothing he held more dear than his life, and he wouldn’t allow anyone to get near it? "Well, I’m sorry that I have to disappoint you. But I’m really not inclined to go to the Black Accord. Maybe you can tell your boss to come see me if it’s that important." Serenthar went still, and his eyes narrowed to slits. "Then... I hope you won’t hold me accountable for what’s about to happen." Immediately after he said that, he raised his ten fingers to the air and then brought them down as if he were swiping. His fingers lit up with silver light, and in that instant, they saw strings that were attached from each finger, connecting to the constructs. Some strings went upward and disappeared into the sky, and some just hung there in front of him. When his hands came down, the strings in front of him lashed out like a whip and cut a downward arc toward the carriage. The Guards in the way jumped away quickly, leaving the carriage sitting there alone. But Vacuse wasn’t worried. There was a reason Captain Mera wasn’t doing anything. Bam! The energy strings slammed into the carriage with a small explosion. The runes on the carriage lit up a bright silver, and the shockwave caused a ripple around the place. But nothing happened to the carriage, not even a scratch. Even those inside felt nothing at all. It was as if a fly was trying to lift a horse. Vacuse smiled. "This isn’t going to be easy for you, Serenthar." "Please leave the window, my lord," Harkon said beside him, even though his own eyes were on what was happening outside. Vacuse shook his head. "And miss what’s about to happen?" Outside, Serenthar’s eyes fell when he realized what had happened. "Oh... it’s a strong artifact. What a shame." Captain Mera lifted her hand, her face cold. "Attack!" A bolt instantly tore through the air and headed directly toward Serenthar, but the man merely smiled casually and didn’t move from his place. But the next moment, a soft glow of silver covered him, and his figure blurred as he changed places with one of the constructs. The bolt of twisting energy slammed into the construct, but much like the carriage, nothing happened to it. "Well, now!" Serenthar shouted. "I’ll deal with the carriage later. For now, let’s kill each other!" As one, all his constructs jerked to life. Their eyes shone with cold silver light, and similar light flashed across their bodies. They looked into the ranks of soldiers and leaped forward. Captain Mera ignored the constructs and headed directly for Serenthar. Purple light covered her body as she ran, the light condensing into hard energy around her, warping around her like armor. "Serenthar!" she shouted. He turned to smile at her. Silver strings ran down his hands, flowing like waves and then weaving into a sword. "Oh... it’s you. I don’t know you, but you seem specially powerful." She didn’t say anything. Instead, she blurred forward and threw a punch. He slashed with his sword, and the two slammed into each other, fist and sword. Boom! The ground beneath them cracked, and the shockwave shoved them apart. But they slammed into each other the next instant and began to fight. His sword cut a downward arc, trailing silver light, and she avoided it by twisting her shoulder the next instant, her punch inches from his face, only held back by silver strings. Serenthar smiled. "Do you know how my power works? There’s little I can’t control. As much as they can’t breathe." She didn’t reply. Instead, the hard purple light that covered her fist glowed sharply, and the hard light exploded. Boom! The strings were shredded easily, but Serenthar was already gone, replaced by a small construct the size of a palm that hung in the air where he was. Captain Mera scowled as she saw the small construct glow brightly before it exploded. She was hurled back, dark smoke rising from her body, and a cracked ground where she was. Serenthar frowned. "I’ve killed a lot of people with that type of fighting combination. But it seems you’re harder to kill than most." Captain Mera narrowed her eyes. "It’s a good combination, to be honest. But an explosion like that is nothing to me. You should try something stronger." Serenthar grinned. "Then I just need to make it bigger, right? That’s something I’m good at! But before that, have you seen how my constructs are doing? "I spent a lot of money on them, and their fighting power is almost the same as my own power output." Captain Mera smiled. "You know, there’s a reason why the Dragon Guards are ranked high!" Just as Serenthar said, in truth, the constructs were absolutely wrecking through the Guards. Their hands were covered in bright light that formed into energy weapons, and their strength itself was almost incomparable. But the Dragon Guards were holding their own just fine. Bam! Bang! Boom! Small explosions and shockwaves rippled through the air as the fighting intensified. As Vacuse watched from his place, he realized that something was wrong. The Dragon Guards should have absolutely destroyed the constructs. And yet. Something strange was happening. It was as if the Guards were slower, their limbs heavy or such. And soon, Vacuse realized why. Among the battlefield, he spotted small constructs, no bigger than smaller fingers, that darted around, trailing small smoke through the battlefield. "Harkon..." Vacuse said slowly. "What do you think those small constructs are doing?" Harkon frowned and looked closer. "I’d say they are creating some kind of poisonous smoke for the Guards to inhale. I think it’s affecting them somehow." "It’s affecting their mobility and cognition. We have to do something." "I see why he’s called the master of the battlefield. So this is what it looks like. Use those human-sized constructs for distraction and then those small ones to spread poison." Vacuse smiled. "Not bad. Not bad at all! Time for me to do something!"
