Chapter 35: Drawn to powerHarkon stepped forward, his steps confident and assured as he walked into the small formation. Immediately, light flashed around him and a figure began to take shape around him. It was a massive creature with two legs and two wings. A Wyvern. Everyone sucked in a sharp breath as they saw it. Although the creature wasn’t in its natural form, they could feel its power as it stood beside Harkon, wings spread around him. Whispers began again, but none was more pleased than Drenvar who sat on his throne, or more displeased than Duke Frexon. Vacuse took note of their expressions since they were both his enemies. Duke Frexon didn’t want to see the Vorrakyn more powerful than they were. It would be a bit troublesome to displace them later on. Drenvar was glad that more elite were showing in his family and different plans were already flashing in his mind. "Step forward!" Harkon did. He placed his hand on the orb and the man shouted, "Rank B!" Drenvar sighed. Although Rank A and B are still Wyvern, the difference in their strength was significantly different. But it is still considered elite and Harkon would have sufficient power and influence in the family if he played his card right. Vacuse grinned. "Although you fall a bit short, you’re still worth to be my direct subordinate. I’ll mold you into something good in the future." Harkon gritted his teeth and didn’t say anything. But Lyra watched Vacuse with narrow eyes and couldn’t help but think to herself, ’So, he’s A ranked then?’ The purpose of knowing the rank of the beast isn’t for the Soulbearer themselves since they already know when they bound with their beasts. It’s for the family, so they could keep records. Basically, a registration. "Bliss Vorrakyn!" Another girl was called and she got a Lindworm of Rank D, but she wasn’t dejected. Unlike those that were dead or failed to bound, at least she would still have enough status in the family to feed herself. A boy was called next with a small Dragonet of Rank E that didn’t reach his knees. "Kagerou Vorrakyn!" Kagerou took a step forward, then he looked back and flashed Vacuse a smile. "If I have a beast more powerful than you, I won’t serve you. I’ll repay you in another way." Vacuse raised his brows. "I guess it makes sense. You want to serve someone more powerful than you. But what if you get the more stronger beast?" Kagerou snorted. "Then you can kiss my daggers." Vacuse watched him leave and he couldn’t help but wonder if that was why the assassin served Drenvar instead of Zephyr in the past life. Kagerou stepped into the formation and his Beast appeared beside him. A Drake. But unlike the usual one, this one was small, almost like a runt, and something weird was happening to the Drake’s energy. It was flickering as if it would snap the next instant. "Kagerou Vorrakyn. Drake, Rank C!" Kagerou was proud of himself when he returned and he flashed a smile at Vacuse, his face a challenge. Vacuse nodded. "You are on the right path." More and more people were called and it soon showed that the genius among them weren’t that much because almost everyone else fell to the lower part. It could also be noted that those who did well ate the blood fruits. ’...this goes in line with my previous life experience...’ Vacuse thought to himself. It was as if they intentionally didn’t call the two, Amon and Vacuse, and were simply keeping them for the last, and before long there were only two of them. Amon went forward with a smile on his face before they even called him. ’...what did he have again in my previous life? I think a C? But I doubt it’ll remain the same now...’ ’...honestly, I don’t know why Drenvar set him up against him... it would have been worth it if it was someone like Lyra or the rigid Harkon....’ Amon went to the formation with a swagger and looked at Vacuse with a small smile. "Prepare yourself, Vacuse. I’m coming for your head." Vacuse smirked. "Don’t your mother teach you not to count your eggs before they hatch, you bloody son of a whore." The smile was wiped clean from Amon’s face and he gritted his teeth as his eyes flashed with killing intent. Vacuse raised his hand and snorted. Not only Amon but most of the surrounding Vorrakyn bastards, and even some of the older Vorrakyn, were glaring at him. "Right. Mothers." After all, all of them were bloody sons of whores. Close enough, at least. Light started to flash around Amon, shooting around him like fireworks and then converging beside him into a massive form of a creature with two wings and two legs. Wyvern. The room went still. Amon placed his hand on the orb and the man shouted with a stunned expression, "Amon Vorrakyn! Wyvern, Rank A!" The room immediately exploded into murmurs. Some envious and some glad of the news. Most of the nobles in the room breathed sighs of relief. Their fall and rise were tied to the power of the Vorrakyn and it seems they would be coming out stronger this time. Duke Frexon was one of the people that looked a bit conflicted. He didn’t know how to feel with his puppet getting more power. Drenvar himself felt satisfaction. He had invested in Amon and it was now paying off. Although he intentionally made Amon to be a balance to Vacuse, and he actually turned out well. Speaking of Vacuse, Drenvar looked his way with hardened eyes. ’....maybe I should have taken him to be here with me because as it’s going now... I don’t think there’s anything special about him since he woke last... well... at least Amon will have something to play with for a while... as for Amon, I must break the leash Frexon has on him...’ Just with that act of getting an A ranked, a lot of things changed in the shadows and the Vorrakyn subtly turned to the one that’s likely to be their new heir.
