Chapter 36: Drawn to power IKagerou grunted. "Sorry, Vacuse. I don’t like the guy, but he’s powerful." "Let the test conclude first." Lyra rolled her eyes, although there was a pensive look on her face and an unreadable glint in her eyes. Even Harkon, that was standing nearby, released a sigh. Vacuse raised his brows. "What’s that, Harkon? Don’t tell me you don’t like me and you’re glad Amon might be your new heir." At this point, people were congratulating Amon, who was smiling so hard, flashing scornful looks at Vacuse’s way. Across the room, a small smile appeared on Lord Ragna’s face and he murmured, "It seems the new heir that I’ll be talking to as equal is already here. A shame, I feel Vacuse would be harder to manipulate. It would have been fun." More and more whispers spread in the room and everyone was already in a mood of jubilation. Vacuse shook his head as he stepped forward. "You would think Lyra isn’t an A ranked too." The room was getting silent as they registered that Vacuse was stepping forward. They all knew of the clash between the two, even though they were so far apart. Even though Vacuse just learned of it recently. Lyra gave a polite smile as she replied, "It’s well known that I already stepped down from the line of succession." Vacuse waved his hand. "Very well, very well. But I don’t get why all of you are getting happy because of a simple A ranked. It’s not as if he’s doing something that’s never been done in the family." With just that, everyone’s attention was focused back on him. Before he stepped into the circle, Vacuse turned to look at the hall. He took everyone in and his eyes flashed with an expression he didn’t try to hide. It was possessive and greedy. This. ’...one day... this will all be mine with that throne... and then I will reach for more...’ Amon’s voice broke his solemn thought. "I don’t think you can afford to be arrogant, Vacuse." Vacuse turned to look at him. "Afford? Are you implying that I can’t pay the price for my arrogance?" Amon laughed. He raised his hand and, with a bit of concentration, a small red crystal appeared, floating above his hands. The crystal was shaped like a small dagger. "Are you sure you can pay the price? This is what it looks like." Vacuse was surprised, and much doesn’t surprise him these days. First, those with crystal powers are rare and they always come to be powerful since, depending on their type of crystal, they could branch into different kinds of magic and powers. Second, using powers just when you get Bound isn’t a common or easy feat. Vacuse wasn’t the only one that was shocked. All the people were shocked. A new powerhouse of the Vorrakyn’s family had been born. "This is truly surprising and frightening," Vacuse said truthfully. He wasn’t above giving praise where it was due because he knew Amon must be a natural talent. Amon snorted coldly. "Don’t give up now. I will make you pay the price even if you lick my ass." Vacuse frowned. "No need to put it that way, Amon. Okay, I’ll make a promise of my own. Since you show me your strength, when I’m done here I will fight you with my full power." Although he said the word gently, even casually, the murderous intent that radiated off him was so strong that everyone in the hall felt it. Before the startled Amon could say anything else, Vacuse had already stepped into the formation. The red light began to shoot around, but the next moment the light lowered as if it was being sucked away by something. Then a form appeared. Everyone held their breath. Surely, the guy who was just so arrogant now must know that he has a powerful beast, right? They watched him intently. It appeared coiled around Vacuse’s neck. There was a slight pause in the hall. Shock appeared on the face of everyone. What the fuck. Nobody knew who started it, but then almost everyone began to laugh while pointing. "Ah! Can you see that?" "This is so funny!" What made it even more so was the expression on Vacuse’s face as if he couldn’t understand why people were laughing. He looked at his shoulder and saw the Void Dragon looking at him quietly. Then he blinked. "Oh... your size." More and more people laughed. But there were some that weren’t laughing. Harkon released a sigh as if he was being freed from a great burden, and his face turned gloomy. Kagerou was rubbing his dagger with a frown on his face. "Something isn’t right." Lyra nodded, her eyes on her father who was half standing on his throne, his face showing absolute shock. Even Duke Frexon didn’t look as happy as he should be. His face was knotted into a frown, his eyes focused on the beast on Vacuse’s shoulder. Amon was slapping his thighs, cracking with laughter. "I can pay the price, he says. Now look at you! You’ve made yourself a laughingstock in front of the whole hall! What a shame!" Vacuse grimaced. He had totally forgotten that the Void Dragon clone was small. "Eh... at least let me measure the rank first." "What’s the use? I’m sure we all know the rank of a Dragonet!" Vacuse sighed and stepped forward to the orb. On his throne, Drenvar vibrated so hard it was as if two stones were grinding together. Who was more familiar with the Beasts of the Dragon pathway than him? As the Dragon Lord, he had even seen drawn anatomy of the internal organs of the different Beasts of the Dragon pathway. His obsession with Dragons had made him study everything about them in the family library and those reserved for the Family Head. Drenvar could probably draw a Dragon from head with all its internal organs. So why? Why? Why was the beast around Vacuse, that was supposed to be a Dragonet, looking so much like a Dragon? He swallowed and watched as Vacuse brought his hand down on the orb.
