Chapter 26: Let it beginDuke Frexon smiled easily. "Of course not. Why would I try to interfere in something like that? Only that the future of the Vorrakyn is also the future of the Western Region. It’s only natural for me to want to know who the future Grand Duke is." Vacuse nearly snorted from his place. Drenvar didn’t seem bothered as he looked at the Duke calmly. "I see." He didn’t say more than that. Duke Frexon looked away and then he turned to the candidates in front of him, all of them potential heirs of the Vorrakyn. His eyes lingered on two people. "Your Honorable Grace, when I was coming to this place and I reached the Dragon’s castle, I was blown away again by the dignity and might, the history of the great Vorrakyn that conquered the West and put their legs on the neck of the barbarians." Lord Ragna’s face darkened when he heard that, but he didn’t say anything. It was also a well-known fact that at one point in time, the Vorrakyn had indeed ruled over the barbarians, the Orcs. It was one of the reasons the enmity among them runs deep. Vacuse looked at the man curiously and he couldn’t help but wonder what the Duke was up to. Drenvar’s face was cold and calm as he watched from his throne. "Thank you, Duke Frexon." Duke Frexon nodded. "We all know that the Vorrakyn’s family pathway is a dangerous one and many people die from it. That’s a reason for us to highlight the potential heirs before the pathway rite." Drenvar raised his brows, his gaze briefly captured all the heirs. He said with cold viciousness, "They are all my heirs. I will choose from the one that’s not dead after the rite." Duke Frexon blinked, then he smiled. "Have you already chosen young Amon then? I heard that you personally raised him and he even came to a diplomatic mission to my territory!" The room went silent immediately and all the whispers died down. They looked from the Dragon Lord to Duke Frexon. What? Amon is already the heir? The whispers started again. Vacuse remained motionless as he raised a single brow. ’....this Duke.. have he made a deal with this Amon or just what did he want? To create discord?...’ It took a few seconds before Vacuse realized that people were beginning to stare at him as well. Lyra shook her head beside him and whispered, "Seems Amon want to force Father’s hand with Duke Frexon. He’s hinting that the faint alliance we have with him was only possible due to Amon. "And in truth, it was only possible because of him. Father didn’t put much thought into it as he sent Amon Vorrakyn on the diplomatic mission, but it turned out well. Now though, seems Amon already sees himself as a heir and already started to make connections. "He might also be the one behind your assassination since he has some power backing him. After all, you are his biggest concern." Vacuse narrowed his eyes and looked at where his said opponent was standing. He was looking his way with sharp, hard eyes and when their eyes met, it seemed as if sparks flew between them. Vacuse raised his brows. "This is my biggest concern?" He wanted to say it quietly but the room was too silent. His voice was like the crack of a released arrow. All attention turned to him. Vacuse shrugged and smiled. Amon scowled as he saw that. He didn’t seem to like the look on Vacuse’s face one bit. His eyes flickered to the Duke and then he took a step forward. Amon bowed to Drenvar. "Your Honorable Grace." Then he turned to Vacuse and sneered. "So you are back, kin killer." Whispers began to spread immediately he said. "Oh... so that’s the person that killed Zephyr?" "They were just kids when he did it too!" "What a shameless one! He even has the guts to show himself off like that." Vacuse sighed. Under Zephyr, Amon was like a green snake under the grass, but this time around, he was fully showing himself and his fangs. With just a single word, he turned everyone’s attention to Vacuse. But Vacuse didn’t seem that concerned. He only raised his head and looked at the hand behind the puppet. Duke Frexon was smiling gently, seemingly looking forward to the show that’s promised to occur. "Duke Frexon," Vacuse said and then paused, letting his words resonate among all of them. They all turned to the Duke who looked slightly surprised to be back in the spotlight. "Why don’t you control your lap dog? He’ll disgrace himself before us all." The room fell into silence immediately. Amon was so shocked that he could only stare at him in shock, but before he could say anything, Vacuse already interrupted him again. "But then, Your Grace. This is nothing, you can continue with the rite. "We will deal with each other when we are back. I and Amon Vorrakyn." Amon closed his mouth with a sharp snap. He was at a loss on how to react and he could only stare in a daze. ’What just happened? Did Vacuse just steal the momentum of the conversation and turn it against him?’ Even Duke Frexon pressed his lips tightly together. ’This boy... he’s tougher than I expected.’ Drenvar nodded. "Very well. We will continue with the rite. What you choose to do after is none of my business." He just gave his tacit agreement to the fight between them. Severin shook his head gently. But before Drenvar could continue, Amon took a deep breath and stepped forward. He went to one knee. "Your Honorable Grace. Please! Let’s settle the matter once and for all! "Let’s use the ranks of our beasts to wager! The one with the higher rank should be the heir while the other be at the mercy of the victor!" Vacuse frowned and thought. ’..what’s giving this guy courage?...’ Drenvar finally showed a hint of a smile. "Very well. But don’t dare to interrupt me again, boy. I will use your blood to mark the rite otherwise." "Let it begin!"
