"How many hours has it been already? They should be dead by now. We should just leave and forget about all of this," one of Representative Drayth's workers said. The Magus looked at the special portal that the Dragon Hunters went through and glared at it as if the portal had done something to her. There were at least ten workers there, all of them Magus of the first circle. Healers were also around, waiting.
"Don't even think about it. Representative Drayth wants to get his hands on the survivors. Will you be the one to tell him that his precious survivors were nowhere to be found because you left your post?" another worker sneered at her fellow workers.
All of them were bored and tired of waiting. What they wanted was for the Magus to rush through the portal, screaming their heads off, so they could be done with the Dragon Hunters.
"At least all this waiting will be worth it. This is the easiest bet I've had in a while, and I'm going to rake in lots of money. I even put my artifacts on it. Ah, thank you, Dragon Hunters," one of them said with a smile, his eyes gleaming with the profit that hadn't yet reached his hands but already felt certain.
The others were all the same. They thanked the Dragon Hunters from the very bottom of their hearts. Workers like them usually leaked information to the outside about which hunters were entering which portal and on which day. This information would then be used to create betting charts.
It was another way for people to gamble—placing bets on how many hunters a team would lose or how many would be wounded.
"For me, I think they'll all be wiped out. Why? Because they're too arrogant! I asked around, and they didn't even get any mind protection artifact or charm. I know it doesn't work that much against mind stalk apes, but that's totally beside the point. They should still get it!"
"I agree. I remember a team that didn't get one then. Till today, we're still waiting for them to return."
"And that's exactly why I said we should write them off! Isn't it well-known knowledge that mind protection artifacts alert those who wear them when the apes are around and trying to take over their minds? Their arrogance killed them!"
That was the opinion everyone held when they heard that the Dragon Hunters went into the Dark Wilderness—to the territory of the mind stalk apes. Read full story at NoveI-Fire.ɴet
They had already begun thinking of them as dead and gone.
So it was with a sense of anticipation that the workers looked at the portal when it suddenly came alive, glowing with blue flickering light that hummed.
Everyone was looking forward to seeing how many survivors there were and how their bets would play out. And then the first person came out.
"Eh? The leader survived? I thought he would be the first one to die, being second circle and all."
"What did you expect? He's mostly cowardly and would send the others first, so of course he's also the first to get out!"
But as they watched the leader straighten and look around, the workers and the healers—all who were present—felt as if something was wrong.
The leader was covered in dried blood that flaked off his body, and yet he wasn't in bad condition. His face was even composed and calm.
Shouldn't this guy be scared out of his head?
But as the leader walked off the platform, the portal shimmered again, and more... hunters? Hunters that were alive began to pour out of the portal.
Not a single one shouting in pain. Not a single one hurt. Not a single one dead. All thirty of them.
And they carried sacks that dripped with blood. It was unbelievable, and yet it happened. No one could deny what they were seeing. The Dragon Hunters had returned—without wounds or losing a single member.
But... but that's impossible, right? The portal must be faulty and took them somewhere else. Yes, yes! That must be it.
"We are back!" the leader suddenly said, and as if he knew what they were thinking, he gestured to one of the hunters, and she threw her sack down.
Bodies tumbled out—at least three heads of apes with gems on their foreheads.
Everyone saw it. They knew what it was and what it represented. Suddenly, those who had placed their bets felt something cold slide into their stomachs.
Two of the workers could see their life savings hit rock bottom, and they instantly fainted.
Not a single person who had bet against the Dragon Hunters won. Surprisingly, there was one guy with a strange name, Kagerou, who had bet for the Dragon Hunters.
He was the one to pack all the money.

"Hahaha! You should have seen their faces when I went away with their gold. They almost spat blood! Vacuse, you should do this again! In fact, we can set up betting of our own and rake in all the money!" Kagerou was still feeling happy about the earlier events. "To be honest, I expected it since it was you, Vacuse, leading them!"
Captain Amros scowled. "You've really learned how to flatter others, haven't you, Kagerou? Why did you not tell us about the bet? Then I would have made lots of gold as well!"
Kagerou shrugged and flashed a smile. "I did not want to disturb you. I don't want to put a burden on you."
Harkon, behind Vacuse's table, also glared at Kagerou. Although he didn't mind missing the bet, he was annoyed that Kagerou would bet in the first place when the safety of their team was on the line.
Vacuse had already ordered that the team that participated in the hunt should get two days of rest and that there would be a bonus for them once the mind stalk apes' remains had been dealt with. They deserved it.
