Chapter 276: Run Thankfully, one other person remembered that his family still existed, and that was Ollie Mylor, who really couldn’t hide like the others. Not that he didn’t try, mind you. And had he not gone crazy over learning about aquaponics, he would’ve likely done his best to disappear better. But then they were faced with a slight hiccup. Okay, maybe it was a major hiccup. After all, they realized that they needed to go through a licensed trading company for some of the materials they needed for the energy stabilizer. And who happens to be a prospective heir to one such company? Ollie—the shiniest light bulb of all, or so he felt when his brother looked at him with those hopeful eyes. Some of the materials they realized they would need had recently been regulated, and while the Duke was able to locate them, he ran into a few roadblocks. The problem wasn’t having a licensed trading company, per se. But having one that fought for an allocation at the beginning of the fiscal year. Duke Leander never thought they would ever need such items and would’ve never thought to apply for licenses for materials that could’ve been used by others. And so here they were, looking for companies that could sell their allocations to them or, heck, even what was left of their quotas. Surprisingly, when they all looked at the options, everyone saw a familiar surname and started looking at the mop who hadn’t even seen the list. "What...?" asked the shortie, who couldn’t compete to see the holo projection. "Brother, does your family have an allocation for Titaniumite and Plasmium?" asked Luca, whose eyes were starting to glow. "Oh. Wait, I think we should have...? If it’s been regulated, then Pop would likely go after it." Ollie shivered as he remembered what going after it actually looked like for his father. It meant something along the lines of never letting go until the allocation was secured. Now, the question is, how much would his family still have, and would his father be willing to sell it to the prodigal son? The same prodigal son who would have to return for Owen’s birthday if he still had plans of keeping his surname. It wasn’t that they weren’t allowed to miss birthdays; it was just because his parents would’ve likely heard that the son had successfully and legally skipped classes for days now. Yep. Sigh. Then there was the fact about not informing his entire family about the guild’s Daycare facility and informing the only brother with a pet, who likely didn’t even see the message. But more than anything, what kind of explanation would he be able to offer his father? He turned to his brother, face pale. "What would I be allowed to tell them when I get there, brother?" His eyes trembled after realizing how his family would likely corner him. It was only then that Luca realized how much his friends had likely sacrificed to keep all of this a secret. The realization was very much belated, yet definitely appreciated. Luca felt he had to apologize to everyone after realizing how hard it must have been for everyone to hide like this, especially from their families. "I’m sorry, everyone...I didn’t realize what it must’ve been like for all of you all this time." Technically, it was something that his brain totally skipped before he got his family involved in this. For as someone who grew up without one, how was he supposed to know that such awkward situations could exist? "It’s okay, brother! And if anything, we would’ve kept it from them as well because it could’ve been risky for them if they had known anything." "Also, my Dad would’ve initially thought I was on drugs than believe that I, of all people, could be a part of something like this!" Ollie shrugged, fully knowing that this would’ve been the likely scenario if not for his very official and up-to-date guild membership. So the mop who had regained a bit of vitality bumped his sulking good brother to reassure him that he was really fine. And honestly, Kyle would’ve at least told Luca about the real score if not for the Duke, who kept on hovering like a bee. Thankfully, these two were easy to tears and easy to smile. Eventually, Luca was able to power through it by bombarding Ollie with gifts that could probably shock the receivers into the next life. If anything, the prodigal son would not have to apologize to anyone if they had all gone to heaven after seeing these. But that was only if he’d manage to get inside their manor without alerting the final bosses. When everyone discovered that the birthday was the next day, the poor guy was speedily shipped out of Planet Nova in the fastest craft available. Not long before he even managed to devise a method for explaining his situation to his parents, the same young man had been dropped off with a tearful goodbye. "Mr. Driver! How could you cry when it’s me who is going to die?!" lamented the son who stood by the manor’s gate. He was let in, of course, for right now, he was still a rightful member of this family. But he knew better, for their Butler and even the nanny had been waving their white handkerchiefs at him, with tears in their eyes. He knew. He was going to be a dead man. Ollie’s heart thundered as a shadow crept down the stairs. His instincts, honed by years of domestic battlefield experience, kicked in with flawless execution. His feet spun on polished marble as he turned tail with the speed of a man possessed. He bolted. But behind him— "OLLIE MYLOR!" Came the bellow of doom, echoing across the manor like it was his own tribulation. "AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!" Ollie could only scream in equal parts distress and emotional protest. But the looming shadow was faster. His father—a man blessed by both genes and spite (mostly this)—charged after him like a comet of parental fury. Surprisingly, the staff didn’t flinch. They simply stepped aside like this was just another Tuesday. Because it was. Ollie cut across the hallway, practically flying past the double doors and into the gallery, his aim? The way to the confessional. His way to salvation. Well, sort of.
