Chapter 121: Mecha Reconstruction They did study. By the time Kyle looked for them to remind them of the time, he found the two shorties huddled together like they were trying to cover up a crime. Granted, they were. But where was the trust between friends and comrades? The two studious boys were initially just studying until Ollie noticed a critical issue: the material grading system was off. And by a lot. The training hall marked the top-grade materials of their world as low or medium grades when they were normally classified as top-grade mecha materials outside of the space. They didn’t actually notice this until they asked to practice building and repairing basic mechas, only to be given mechas that were definitely not basic. But they couldn’t get anything that was of a lower caliber and had no choice but to practice on mechas that were really above their non-existent pay grades. It was a simulation, but everywhere Luca and Ollie looked were materials they hadn’t really seen. "Brother, I think I want to take my words back. I might actually be burned at this rate. How are we going to use this to practice when it was clearly beyond our level?" Luca also wondered how to deal with this, as this was already the most basic mecha manufacturing module. But he didn’t miss the fact that this meant that there were far better mechas than what they currently have. Someone just needed to be able to make them. "Host, what about using the data from the current mechas you own? If you let the training hall scan it, you should be able to use the appropriate data for training." Luca noted D-29’s contribution in all of this. If they manage to pass the exam, it will likely be because of this suggestion. That changed the game for the two masterminds. While Luca had a Manual Mecha, Ollie said that the exam would use the regular combination piloted mechas. The Manual mechas were so new and just released that even the seniors needed to take the same lessons as the freshmen. It was impossible to repair one when all the classes hadn’t tackled it. So Luca decided to use the Golden Mecha’s data as their first experiment. "Wow!" Ollie gawked at the data construction happening before them. Mind you, while it was possible to do this using the virtual pods, actually tinkering with a mecha, even in the virtual world, would cost coins. It would definitely not cost as much as the real materials, but it would still cost money. But it was free in the training hall, and they could dismantle and make mistakes without their hearts bleeding. However, while these two giggled their way while dismantling engines, cockpits, and all the joints they could see, a normally galant mecha wished to disappear, afraid of being ’next.’ Luca actually wanted to find information about Guardian Mechas the moment they got there, but he figured he couldn’t do anything with the information he had. And his guess was right. When the reconstructed mecha appeared for repair, Luca had to take a moment to match theory with reality. Repairing mecha was not as easy as assembling toys, and the temporary student could only marvel at his brother, who actually looked like he understood something! It took them repeatedly dismantling and returning the entire thing to memorize the procedure and its feel. What looked like a mundane effort actually took up a chunk of their remaining preparation time. Luca’s basics were bad, and he had to learn more techniques to be able to manipulate materials and parts from Ollie, who was luckily more patient in teaching. However, what he lacked in a formal foundation was something he could make up with his ability to learn and absorb information like a sponge. Luca learned like he was taking the mecha mechanic exam. And thankfully, he did. Because more than all the combat practice he’d done over several days, nothing more had helped develop a combat style that would be unique to him. "Luca! I think we’ve finally succeeded!" Ollie looked at the reconstructed mecha, which took way longer than when they had attempted to just repair it. Ollie heard that there were going to be bonus points for reconstructions that would improve the mecha. And as someone who was out for blood for any and all possible points, Ollie had to make sure he could reconstruct when possible. The two aspiring (questionable) mechanics marveled at the new statistics and figured they finally succeeded in doing it on their own. "I didn’t think it would turn out so well! And who would’ve thought we would actually finish an entire reconstruction!" Luca grinned up to Ollie, who had his nose upturned in pride. "What did I tell you? One day, I’ll make you a super cool mecha! Hmph!" Ollie returned his good brother’s smile, then proceeded to celebrated with a couple of fruit shakes. For the rest of the day, these two would keep on snickering as they tried to figure out what more they could improve on or, better yet (worse), find new mechas to practice on. Now, the others weren’t particularly aware of what those two had been up to. So when the innocent-looking dwarves asked to borrow a few of their spare mechas, the three pilots didn’t think much about it. After all, they only needed the mecha data. But it was not the same experience for Sid, who had been traumatized beyond belief. While the mecha’s statistics really improved as the two worked hard to reconstruct, it seemed like it was inversely proportional to the mecha’s aesthetics. The guardian mecha’s biomechanical heart shook in fear. In light of the most recent developments, Sid even asked D-29 if they had a basis for the aesthetics they used when reconstructing. But the little system remained silent. D-29 could not respond to such a question as a system must remain loyal to its Host while maintaining the integrity of its programming. However, this silence was not without action, as the little system decided to add another step to the plans it was laying out. The two aspiring mercenaries practiced until they couldn’t resist sleep. And it was this huddled-up form that Kyle ended up seeing when he came to fetch the two shorties who likely practiced until the wee hours of the night. Kyle was curious about what these two were hiding but prioritized getting to the examination hall on time. Whatever that was, it could wait, as nothing would be worse than preparing for so long only to miss the exam because you were late. But it was a good thing Kyle and the rest didn’t see what these two had been hiding. They would likely have been burdened with intense fear for the test taker, who could have shocked the world with his wild aesthetics. Thankfully, they only provided standard materials for everyone taking the exam. Luca felt that it was such a shame, considering how much better these mechas could have been improved had other materials been allowed. Meanwhile, both Sid and D-29 could only feel relieved that there were limiting factors to the creativity that could be unleashed.
