Chapter 107: Sign-up To be perfectly clear, it was literally just the mouth. So, when Baldy got enraged and looked like he was about to unleash his spiritual abilities on Ollie, he immediately hid behind the wall named Kyle. "What do you think you’re doing?" Kyle, who felt someone hiding behind him, had to ask. "You ate my brother’s food, so at least make use of your giant build and let me hide!" Ollie had pride when it came to his brother, but he didn’t have much of that for himself. So the not-so-little mop crumpled himself to fit behind Kyle’s back. Just in case. Wow. These guys were really something else. They angered the geezer to the point of collapse and then scurried off into some hole to hide. Fine. Kyle figured there would be a backlash after the mop threatened someone like that. Many onlookers didn’t expect such a turn of events and were just as shocked as they tried digesting the implications. Even that idiot initially feared for his future until he decided to listen to his delusions. Baldy was understandably angry because he thought he was being punked. He was preparing to at least get these young ones to taste a bit of pummeling after humiliating him like that! Instructors be damned! And maybe he won’t get reprimanded since they even had the gall to come up with something that absurd? However, as he was preparing to look for confirmation, he noticed how everyone else looked at him pitifully. Was that scrawny boy really the Duke’s son?! It was impossible, and he was more inclined to believe that, or else he would be eaten by the fear that was slowly gripping him. What if? But that had to be a lie, right? Because he wasn’t living under some rock and surely heard about the Duke’s wayward son. He was said to be frivolous and a giant philanderer. So why does it seem like he’s too weird and too short? Baldy wasn’t aware of the most recent gossip and failed to recognize the people before him. Thankfully, the uncle didn’t get to overwork his one remaining brain cell as Instructor Falco called the students’ attention. He was done watching and felt like any more, and he’d start a different kind of lecture. It was lunchtime, and people weren’t obligated to hear any of this, so he planned to keep it short. "The sign-ups for the Mercenary License Exam have been posted. And those interested in joining guilds should make sure to take this exam to obtain proper qualifications." Luca wiggled in Xavier’s embrace as he wanted to see the sign-ups. That was his ticket to more CP and money, so he wanted to ensure he could get it right. "As for those who want to establish their own guilds, there would be a separate guideline as this year’s Astral Cup would have a different format." Luca wondered about this Astral Cup but figured he could look into that later. If there was anything he needed to focus on, it would be getting to the sign-ups and studying better so he could pass! But while that one small animal was itching to be the first one to sign up, its slightly taller duo was really lamenting the world. Before Ollie’s blood pressure returned to normal, he actually thought about joining his brother in forming the best guild (that money could buy). But after calming down, he remembered what was usually tested for mechanics like him. While everyone else would take a similar test, Ollie, as a first-year student, would have to repair an entire mecha. What exactly was he going to repair? The hand? The foot? Or probably the paint job?! He, the perennial coaster, would be lucky enough to repair the paint job! Which first-year student could repair an entire mecha?! Certainly not Ollie. Fuck. But Ollie would have to do it. He would have to figure it out because when he thought about declining, he locked eyes with his brother, whose face looked ready to ascend in happiness! And it didn’t help that his innocent brother was very excited about it. He could indeed attempt to take the test, but whether he would pass was a totally different question! That was actually why the guilds valued senior mechanics because they really had to depend on them, as students from the other grades would rarely pass. Of course, there would be a few geniuses, but none of them could do it the moment they stepped into the Academy. And Ollie was definitely no genius! Xavier could already tell what was happening just by the extreme difference in expressions. His little animal was clearly more invested in this than your average student, and Xavier couldn’t help but wonder why. On the other hand, the mop was likely facing a crisis. Since they did research on the students of the academy, they were actually privy to the grades of many of these students. And Ollie didn’t exactly have stellar grades worthy of being remembered. And yet, there was no way to decline the chipmunk. He understood because even Xavier couldn’t decline when Luca dragged them all toward the sign-ups. Xavier didn’t want to be the one to inform the chipmunk about the issue, but he figured no one else would want to do it. "Luca, I—" But he didn’t get to finish because Luca suddenly looked like his world had collapsed. "What’s wrong?" Xavier asked but decided to look at what got Luca spooked like that. Luca was initially all smiles as he signed up, but then he got into the specifics and realized it was asking for the manual mecha number—his manual mecha number. But Luca, who was fresh from the exam, had no manual mecha. He suddenly felt nauseous and didn’t expect that it was not only his brother’s hopes and dreams that exploded with the mine. It was a tragedy, and Luca had no idea where to get another manual mecha or if it was even possible to buy one. And if so, would he be able to afford it? Xavier finally understood the problem and jotted down a number next to Luca’s name. Luca saw Xavier’s movements and wondered what he was doing. Then the money grubber saw him inputting the missing mecha details. The little chipmunk blinked before asking Xavier what that was all about. "It’s fine. I told you, I got it." It was a casual gesture from someone who has long figured out that this might be an issue. Xavier didn’t make a big deal out of it; he just quietly filled in the details. He figured something like this probably stumped the little chipmunk. But Luca never expected such a thing from anyone. He remembered Xavier saying that he would be responsible and that Luca wouldn’t have to pay for the mecha that exploded. Still, the little criminal actually forgot about getting a replacement! Luca was too flabbergasted at someone’s kindness and couldn’t help but say, "Xavier, I don’t think my body would be enough to repay you." He was too bewildered and didn’t know how else to thank the guy who had given him so much. It came out of nowhere. And Xavier choked.
