Chapter 158: Main Event Butler Henry was there on the order of Imperial Princess Gianina. At the age of six, the princess already knew of the problems regarding the corruption and spiritual power imbalance plaguing the Empire. And of the risks her big brother was taking as he joined their uncle in fighting on the front lines. So, the Princess tasked the Butler to use her life savings if needed, provided he returned with some of the goods up for auction. And that was what the dutiful Butler was doing. It was just that he didn’t expect it to be like this! If anything, the Imperial family could actually requisition the goods they needed or wanted. But even when they wanted to buy some of those popular fruits on Star Net, they knew it was rare for it to circulate and be available to the masses. And so they let it go in favor of the people who would only be able to afford those undeniably low prices. All they could do was to ensure that it remained in the Empire. So, imagine their surprise when the Princess intercepted a package for her mother. Butler Henry’s heart almost stopped when he saw the Princess slumped on the floor. He thought they had been attacked, especially after seeing the box she had next to her. Was it food poisoning?! But then he heard small hiccups coming from one Imperial blob. It was Princess Nina, who was alive but not exactly well. "?!" "Your Imperial Highness! What’s wrong? Did you get sick?!" Rushed the Butler, who wanted to take her to the infirmary immediately! *Hiccup!* "No—" *Hiccup!* "Butler Henry, I... I think I’m going to be punished. I didn’t mean it, I swear!" The little Princess was suddenly curled into a ball, which she usually did when stressed. "What’s wrong, Princess Nina?" Asked the worried Butler, who somehow realized what had happened. The crime scene was relatively straightforward. As an honest child, the Princess didn’t even clean off her face after eating whatever was on the packet that was definitely not addressed to her. And there was now just a piece left. Princess Nina really did not desire to eat everything; it was just that it looked shiny and appealing. Then, when she opened it, something in her felt the need to taste one! It was just a tiny bite! But this tiny bite was unstoppable as it turned into one, then two, and then, somehow, ten! And now, all that was left was one chip. One. The Princess was devastated, as she was even caught red-handed! It was her first time committing a crime, and she didn’t even get the chance to run. Instead, she curled like those armadillos from her favorite show and stayed there to be caught. It was impossible to live a life of crime. Thought the Princess, who clutched on the last chip like it was her lifeline. But then realized that at times like this, there was only one thing that could be done. "Butler Henry. Please, take the last piece. So, you could know what you’d need to buy for me!" Implication. When one is at fault and caught, one must implicate the witness. And when one cannot beat them, one must join them. That was the short tale of how Butler Henry got roped into bidding for the underage Princess. And so far, he had been successful. He was going home with a pack of sinful Banana Chips and a box of Egg Sandwiches. The Butler thought he had succeeded, and many of those who got a sandwich box for their families felt the same. But what was this?! There was another item up for auction?! Butler Henry was suddenly on high alert as everyone who was preparing to go to the back to claim their winnings sat back down, all with taut muscles, ready to spring on whatever this last item was. And the person who had the honor of facing these suddenly ferocious predators was emcee Mitchel, who had to gulp before continuing. "Tonight’s best and last would be an offering so rare, so exquisite, that it will undoubtedly be spoken of in hushed tones across the galaxies for many rotations to come." It was the final time the gavel would fall for today, but the hardworking emcee hoped he wouldn’t be crushed by it. There was actually a whole speech prepared for this. It was how each roasted chicken glistened with perfection, was seasoned with care, and was roasted to a tender succulence that defies the limits of culinary artistry. Whatever culinary artistry actually meant for people who would just eat nutrient solutions all day, every day. Of course, there was supposedly a spiel about the fresh salad, which was good enough for sharing but would likely be hoarded by one lucky person. Not to mention what was supposed to be the finale, which was this glorious-looking apple pie that he had also never seen. But he wasn’t given the chance to say anything as the Mylor Patriarch followed his boy’s advice and told Emcee Mitchel to slightly open one of the containers. It was a very still moment— like a bamboo suddenly motionless because of the absence of wind. But it was but a short moment. A really short one—as several people from the boxes descended from their positions like leaping assassins to smell whatever the people from below were getting. It was the only time they felt cheated for being up there. Despite their eloquence, these people couldn’t even find ways to describe this heavenly scent. But it was because good food was scarce, and these people had almost no concept of it. How would one even describe something when all of it was new to them? Butler Henry knew he was screwed, or for the lack of a better term, fucked. It was apparent this time around. The auditorium was filled with Jackals who even came in groups. Even the lesser nobles who wanted to risk their lives realized that even if they wanted to pool their resources, it would be nothing compared to these families with extreme generational wealth. And it was time to show them how the high-rollers liked to play. What was surprising to everyone though, was how one of these jackals included the Duke of Kyros who honestly made a showing of jumping from his personal Box. Even his good son was shocked to learn that the father, who actually had two whole chickens with him, was going in for the kill. But of course! Not only did the father long to support his son! But it was also a way to deter everyone from suspecting them. Who would go to such a high-profile auction only to watch? Well, many surely would. But the Duke of Kyros, who was supposed to be out there secluding himself, would go out only to sit there and watch? Then he might as well hang up a sign saying that it was them. They were selling these products. So, the Protective father decided to fight it out with these people whom he hadn’t seen in years. This was all to the utter shock of the son, whose father was bidding what looked like their entire fortune on a chicken he could cook again! Luca was going to die. He forgot how to exhale!
