Chapter 181: Leadership Luca sat on the ground with his back straight and a stern expression that these people hadn’t seen. He looked mad. The last time D-29 saw a similar expression, it was treated to a night of the Host scaring the system into nearly overheating. But how could Luca not need meditation after seeing the resulting lay of the land? It was an absolute disaster! And the little chipmunk tried keeping it together because this was largely his fault. Which was why it was more painful. Fields were ruined, trees were toppled, and they were covered in green because lettuce leaves were scattered everywhere! Sid wouldn’t have needed a paint job had he been outside the space button when it all happened! Not to mention the fruits that were forcefully harvested because of the strong energy wave that shook everything. There were just so many things going on that Luca, who had never encountered such a disarray in his space, was overwhelmed. The golden dragon was now pouting. And Xavier watched as the little chipmunk looked more and more crestfallen by the minute but refused to say anything. Or maybe he wasn’t refusing to say anything. No one was just asking. And he figured that someone would have to, and so he did. "What’s wrong?" Asked Xavier, who decided to squat next to the little chipmunk, who was visibly surprised at being asked. Hmm. Was that too surprising for him? Apparently, yes. Because Luca wasn’t used to being asked like this. He didn’t know where to begin, save for not knowing what he should do first. "Everything...I think. But I’m not sure how I’ll finish all of it!." "There’s just too many problems!" Luca gave Xavier an anguished look. "Then why not do it all at the same time?" Xavier asked seriously. But to the already despondent Luca, it sounded like he was being goaded. "Are you making fun of me? That’s impossible! I’m not even sure how to finish one, and—" Luca stopped, suddenly losing steam as he got tired of trying to explain. Apparently, even that was too difficult. "Luca, you talk as if there’s only one person here." Xavier wasn’t sure, but by the looks of it, the little chipmunk was overwhelmed because he seriously thought of doing everything by himself. Just what kind of past did he have to assume that it was him against the world? "There’s so many of us here that we can either start doing different tasks or focus on one." Xavier gestured toward everyone sitting around Luca, including the elders and even the blasted tortoise. Luca was caught off-guard because he was already starting to feel worse about his incompetence when the Prince suddenly pointed out the existence of everyone else. But why would they have to do anything? It wasn’t their fault. "You can just tell us what to do, and we’ll do it. You just need to lead us." Now, the little chipmunk could only feel around the foreign concept of leadership. The leaders he knew weren’t exactly good examples, and just how could he lead anyone else when he could barely even govern himself? And right now, that was becoming painfully obvious. To think he was excited about being a Guild Leader! Luca’s reaction surprised most of them because instead of being glad about having free labor, Luca was in an even worse mood. Xavier admittedly panicked because he didn’t expect this reaction. Not from someone who led them pretty well when it came down to collecting materials. But it was largely because Luca couldn’t equate this disaster with anything good for these people, and it felt like unless there was a benefit, no one would really want to do things. Just like back then. If he didn’t give them pills, he wouldn’t get food. So, the first time leader couldn’t delegate something that sounded like a total loss. The little chipmunk was spiraling, and Xavier could tell. But he wasn’t sure which part aggravated it all. And he had never been the type to console people. In fact, he was the reason why most people needed to be consoled! But thankfully, there was that mop. "Brother! He’s right! Also, aren’t they supposed to be free labor, and yet you even feed them daily? Look at how big they’ve gotten?!" Ollie pointed out his version of facts. And one prince fought the urge to smack the talkative blonde but held it in because Luca seemed to be responding to this jab. Ollie wasn’t sure why his brother was like this, but if anything, he figured that it was because Luca was just too good for the world. And at times like this, what would someone good think? Well, he wasn’t sure, but if it was his brother, then it was likely something to do with not wanting to burden others. But they were already overpaid laborers! With overtime pay that could even cross into the next life! So, if Luca wanted them to polish the ground, then they really ought to be doing just that! But here they were, doing nothing, while his good brother sat there contemplating about having to finish everything by himself! "Brother! You should just delegate the work! And when nothing works, just tell your husband to fix it!" Ollie said as a matter of fact. "Mom says so, and Pop says Mom’s right all the time, so going by that, you should just do that when you’re stuck." Ollie shrugged, seriously relaying the advice that her parents always gave when asked how they’ve managed not to kill each other all this time. Now, Xavier thought this was about to enter some unchartered territory and figured he’d just volunteer his services lest the mop starts a marriage counseling session. "I can help you delegate. With this many hands working, we should be done in no time." "Really?" Luca asked, unsure about how to deal with this many possible helping hands. Xavier nodded, which finally got Luca to accept the help. But who would’ve known that it would start a fire in the little money grubber’s heart? Because Xavier didn’t just tell Luca which person to assign. He asked. "If we’re going by efficiency, who should be the one to deal with gathering fallen trees and other resources?" Asked Xavier who meant it when he said he would help in the delegation. Luca thought about it before raising his hand, "I think it should be me." "Why so?" "Because I can directly place the items into the inventory. We’d barely need tools unless something was still semi-attached." "I think so, too." Xavier nodded, a small smile forming on his lips. "And as for all the shredded lettuce leaves?" Luca’s eyes twitched before narrowing as he looked at the guardian beast, who suddenly stood in attention. "The Tortoise should pick it up. And he should pick it up well because that would be the food for the foreseeable future," Luca said, and suddenly, everyone wondered if this was the right thing to do. Because Luca was rather scary. "Right, but we’re unsure if the tortoise could be trusted to work independently. Who should watch over him?" Asked Xavier, who was starting to find this amusing. The chipmunk nodded a little too earnestly, and it was clear that the tortoise had some begging to do. "I think it should be Jax because he wants his children to survive," said Luca with a determined face. Then, it was as if a dam had broken. Luca then started talking about the elders and the planting field, Ollie about making a pen for the tortoise, and Kyle, who would gather the needed materials. And what of the husband who started it all? Well, he was the emotional support Prince who followed Luca around to assist with whatever was being done. And while it sounded like an easy job, it actually included dealing with the Father who had come looking for his precious son.
