Chapter 59: Sugar Daddy! Inside the hospital... Lorie found her mother inside her father’s hospital room. "Mom, you won’t believe what I just saw." Patricia, still fuming from her argument with Anne, shot her an irritated look. "What is it now?" "That wretched girl, Anne—she is nothing but a gold-digger!" Lorie exclaimed, holding up her phone. "She has a sugar daddy. Look at this." She played the video she had recorded. "She acts all innocent, but in reality, she has been sleeping with a rich man for money. Now I finally understand how she managed to afford to keep Papa in such an expensive hospital." "That shameless girl!" Patricia fumed, her anger flaring as she watched the footage. "She is nothing but a curse, always bringing trouble our way. And now, she is out to ruin the family’s reputation too. What am I supposed to do with her?" She slapped her forehead in frustration. "I regret the day your father took her in." A cunning idea sparked in Lorie’s mind. "Mom, I know exactly how we can get rid of her." Patricia’s curiosity piqued. "What do you mean?" "Don’t you remember Mr. Robert?" Lorie said with a sly smirk. "He was willing to pay five million for Anne. Why don’t we arrange her marriage with him?" The thought of Anne being forced to marry an ugly, overweight, middle-aged widower with two children thrilled Lorie. The idea of seeing Anne trapped in a miserable marriage filled her with twisted satisfaction. Patricia’s lips curled into a greedy grin, but as her gaze fell on her husband’s unconscious form, she hesitated. "But if she gets married, who will pay for your father’s medical expenses?" Lorie cast a cold glance at her father. After a moment of silence, she said bluntly, "I don’t think he is ever waking up." "Don’t say such things about your father," Patricia scolded. "Mom, be realistic," Lorie pressed. "I know it’s hard, but he has been like this for three years. How much longer can we keep going like this? The hospital is already refusing to keep him. It’s time to let go." Patricia fell silent, deep in thought. She had given up hope of her husband ever recovering long ago, but Anne’s financial support had kept her from making any decisions. Now, hearing Lorie’s words, she felt it was finally time to stop his treatment. "Just think about it, Mom," Lorie continued, gripping her mother’s hands. "If we make Anne to marry Mr. Robert, we’ll get five million. With that money, we can finally live the life we’ve always wanted." In the meantime, Paul Clair’s fingers moved slightly for the first time in years, but both Patricia and Lorie remained completely engrossed in their conversation and didn’t notice it. A group of men in black suits strode into the ward, startling Patricia and Lorie. "Who are you people?" Patricia snapped, her voice sharp with alarm. "How dare you barge in like this? This is a private ward. You are intruding on our privacy." The men ignored her outburst and began wheeling Paul’s bed toward the door. "What do you think you are doing?" Patricia panicked as she saw them moving her husband. She hurried forward, blocking their path. "Where are you taking him?" One of the men finally spoke. "We’re transferring him to another hospital." Without another word, they continued moving. "Hey, wait...!" Patricia shouted, rushing after them. "Mom," Lorie called, quickly following. "You can’t just take him away like this," Patricia yelled in frustration. "I’ll sue you." But the men remained unfazed, pushing Paul’s bed toward an ambulance waiting outside. "Lorie, get a taxi. We need to follow them," Patricia ordered urgently. Lorie flagged down a passing taxi and jumped in. As soon as Patricia settled in beside her, Lorie commanded the driver, "Follow that ambulance." The taxi sped off. Patricia’s eyes remained locked on the ambulance, her stomach twisting with unease. "Who are these people? Why are they taking your father?" "It has to be Anne’s doing," Lorie muttered darkly. "Didn’t I tell you I saw her with a man? She must have hired them to transfer Papa to another hospital." Patricia’s face contorted with fury. Her fist rolled against her palm as she fought to control her rage. "She is nothing but a shameless woman," Lorie sneered. "Using her sugar daddy’s influence to move Papa without consulting us. If this continues, the neighbors will find out about her affair. We need to put an end to this before things spiral out of control." "Let’s see how this plays out," Patricia seethed. "Then I’ll deal with her myself." Inside Augustine’s car... A heavy silence filled the car, thick and suffocating. Anne stared out at the passing scenery, her thoughts tangled in the various conversations from the hospital. Suddenly, a memory surfaced—Augustine had mentioned he was there to visit a colleague. That was when she remembered his job interview from the previous day. She had been so wrapped up in her own problems that it had completely slipped her mind. Her curiosity piqued, and she turned to him. "How did your interview go?" she blurted out. "Did you get the job?" Augustine shot her a quick smile. "Yes, I did." "You got the job!" she repeated in surprise. "Why didn’t you tell me?" "You never asked." Anne opened her mouth but found herself at a loss for words. Feeling slightly embarrassed, she huffed and turned her gaze back to the window, her arms crossing over her chest. "I forgot because of everything that had happened yesterday," she muttered. "But you still could have told me." "You were drunk last night, remember?" He smirked, glancing at her before returning his focus to the road. At his words, memories from the morning came rushing back—his teasing grin, his bare torso, and most embarrassingly, the bite mark on his neck. Her cheeks burned, and she immediately lowered her gaze down to her fingers on her lap, unable to meet his gaze. Noticing her flustered reaction, his smirk widened. "I was planning to take you out tonight to share the news." Anne hesitantly looked up and saw the amusement in his eyes. Her heart fluttered, skipping a beat. "Well, now you know," he said casually, keeping his attention on the road. "So, I’m no longer unemployed. That means from now on, whenever you are in trouble, I should be the first person you turn to. Understood?" A warm smile spread across Anne’s face, her chest swelling with emotions. For the first time in a long while, she felt completely at ease by his side. "Which company hired you?" she asked curiously. "It’s a small firm—Starlite Corp.," Augustine replied, his tone indifferent as if it weren’t a big deal. However, Anne’s eyes widened in shock when she heard the name. "Wait... did you just say Starlite Corp.? Isn’t that the company recently acquired by Sphere Group?" "Yes, that’s the one," he confirmed. "They hired me as their new CEO."
