Anne didn’t respond—her body was still stiff from the shock, her mind trying to process what had just happened. The scene kept playing over and over in her head. "How long do you plan to lie on top of me?" Augustine let out a low, mocking chuckle. "I’m in pain, you know." That snapped her back a little. "S-Sorry!" she stammered, quickly scrambling off him. She reached out to help him, but he winced in pain and clutched his arm. "You’re hurt?" she asked, her heart dropping. "Where? Let me see—please." Her hands hovered around him, unsure whether to touch or pull away. Just then, Gustave came rushing toward them, his face pale with concern. "Sir! Are you alright?" His gaze flicked between Augustine and Anne. "Should I take you to the hospital?" "No," Augustine replied firmly, his eyes moving to the wrecked car down the street. It had slammed into the stone road barrier on the side. "Check the car. Get everything on the driver. I want a full report." "Yes, sir," Gustave said with a nod. "He is already in custody. I’ll get the details. For now, please let me take you home." Augustine turned to Anne, gently taking her hand. "Let’s go home." He led her to the car and helped her inside. She didn’t resist—still shaken, she let herself be guided. Once both were seated, Gustave slid into the driver’s seat and pulled away from the chaotic scene. As the car rolled through the streets, Augustine glanced at Anne, concern etched deep in his eyes. "How could you be so careless crossing the road? Didn’t you even think to look around? Anything could’ve happened!" His brows furrowed as the memory of the accident from his past life flashed through his mind—his car hitting Anne, snatching her life away in a heartbeat. The image of Anne lying motionless in the pool of blood made his chest tighten painfully. Just imagining losing her again made his blood run cold. Anne’s lips jutted into a pout as Megan’s cruel accusations replayed in her head. "I wasn’t paying attention," she muttered. "But you didn’t need to risk yourself for me. I can take care of myself." She turned away, folding her arms tightly across her chest. Augustine blinked, surprised by her cold tone. He had expected gratitude—at least concern for his injury—but instead, she was distant, aloof. His gaze lingered on her. ’Is this because of the rumors?’ he wondered. His features softened. He reached out and pulled her into his chest, wrapping an arm around her gently. "I’m sorry," he murmured into her hair. "I didn’t mean to scold you. I just... I was terrified. If that car had hit you...I would’ve lost my mind." Anne’s head remained against his chest for a heartbeat longer, her emotions warring inside her. Then she jerked back. "Don’t act like you care," she snapped. "You are just playing with my feelings." She broke free from his arms, scooting away from him, her glare sharp as a blade, leaving Augustine stunned and aching. Augustine’s brow knitted in confusion and disbelief. "What are you even saying?" He gripped her arm, forcing her to face him. "You’re my wife, Anne. The woman I love. How can you think I’d ever play with your feelings?" Anne’s eyes flared, defiance and hurt burning within them. "Really?" she hissed. "Then why are you planning to marry Megan?" The words hit Augustine like a thunderclap. His eyes widened in shock, and for a moment, he was speechless. "You... you know about Megan?" Gustave glanced nervously at the rearview mirror, catching the charged atmosphere crackling like a brewing storm in the backseat. He quickly averted his eyes, sensing that things were about to explode between them. The stunned confirmation was all Anne needed. Her heart sank like a stone in deep water. ’So it’s true,’ she thought. ’He has been planning this all along—pretending to love me while planning a future with someone else.’ Her expression twisted with pain and betrayal. "You really thought you could keep it from me? Lie to me?" Tears brimmed in her eyes, her voice trembling with fury. "What do you take me for? A fool?" "No, Anne—it’s not what you think," he tried, reaching for her again. But she moved back, dodging his hands. "I heard that the elders are talking about it," she said bitterly. "Your grandfather wants you to marry Megan, doesn’t he?" "Anne, please just listen—" he begged, his grip finding her shoulders this time, eyes pleading. "Answer me," she shouted. "Yes, or no?" His silence lasted too long. "Yes, but..." "You said yes..." she repeated, a laugh tinged with despair escaping her lips. Tears rolled freely down her cheeks. "So you’re engaged with her... while still being married to me?" "I’m not engaged to her," Augustine burst out, his voice rising in frustration and pain. His loud voice echoed through the car. Gustave gripped the steering wheel tightly, his breath coming in shallow bursts. He desperately wanted to intervene, to say something that might ease the tension, but he was afraid it would offend Augustine. He held himself back, trying to keep his eyes on the road. "Anne..." Augustine’s tone softened as he gently took her hands in his. He didn’t allow her to retreat this time. "Yes, it’s true that Grandpa wants me to marry Megan. But I told him firmly that I’m already married. That I love you. I won’t marry Megan. You have to believe me." His voice’s raw emotion and sincerity struck something deep in Anne. For a moment, her hardened heart began to thaw. Yet, the pain still clung to her like a shadow. She couldn’t let her guard down. "If that’s the truth," she asked icily, "then why is Megan walking around calling herself your fiancée?" Augustine’s brows shot up in disbelief. "You... spoke to Megan?" "Oh, don’t act surprised," Anne rolled her eyes, yanking her hands away. "Don’t tell me you didn’t know she has been hired as the company’s general manager." "General manager?" Augustine turned sharply toward Gustave. "Why wasn’t I informed about this?" Gustave swallowed hard and met his boss’s gaze in the rearview mirror. "I... The new general manager reported today, but I didn’t check the full profile. I didn’t know it was Megan Granet..."
