Chapter 146: Interrogating Robert Later that day... Augustine had to leave for the branch office of the Sphere Group. Before leaving, he had instructed Anne to go home after work and wait for him. After the meeting, Gustave came over and said something in a hushed tone. Augustine’s expression hardened. "Let’s go there. I want to talk to him." He strode into the elevator, Gustave following him. It was already dusk when they arrived at an underground casino. Reckless energy buzzed in the whole place. Cigarette smoke curled in the air, thick and suffocating, mixing with the sharp scent of liquor and sweat. Flashing neon lights painted the room in violent shades of red and green. At the crowded poker tables, men with hardened faces and sharp suits barked out bets, laughter erupting as chips clattered into growing piles. In the corners, scantily clad dancers swayed to the pounding bass, their movements wild and hypnotic. The air was electric, thick with desperation, greed, and the feverish thrill of risk. But Augustine and Gustave paid no attention to the chaos around them. Their gazes were fixed, their strides purposeful, cutting through the madness like knives. They crossed the casino floor and pushed through a heavy door at the back, stepping into a dim corridor that led to a private room. The music and noise dulled to a distant hum. In the center of the room, Robert knelt on the icy floor, his body trembling slightly. His hands were tightly bound behind his back, a blindfold secured over his eyes, and a gag silencing his muffled cries. Augustine and Gustave stood over him, their expressions hard as stone. "Remove his blindfold and gag," Augustine commanded. Gustave glanced at the two guards standing by the door and waved a hand, signaling them to follow Augustine’s command. One of the guards approached and pulled out the gag from Robert’s mouth. As the blindfold was removed, Robert blinked rapidly as he tried to adjust his eyesight in the dimly lit room. When the blur of his vision cleared a bit, he saw two tall figures in front of him. The moment his eyes set on Augustine, his face lost all color, his blood running cold in his veins. "The devil!" he mumbled, his throat tightening. He sank further into the cold floor, his whole body trembling. He didn’t know he was trembling because of the fear or cold. "I-I already followed your command and married Lorie right away," he stuttered. "I didn’t touch your woman. Please spare me. I promise I’ll punish Lorie and her mother for their wrongdoings." "You said you wouldn’t touch my woman, but you sent a man to kill her," Augustine hissed dangerously, his eyes flashing in anger. "Luckily, she was saved. If the car had hit her, she would have died right there." "Killing your woman?" Robert explained, terrified. "I-I didn’t..." Then he suddenly remembered someone paying him to kill a woman a few days back. He had entrusted the task to one of his men, but he didn’t know who the woman was. "I didn’t know," he said urgently. "I really didn’t know it was your woman. Someone paid me for this task, and I gave the responsibility to one of my boys." "Who paid you?" Augustine pressed. Robert shook his head. "I don’t know him. We only care about the money we get. We don’t check the customer’s identity. Our focus is on carrying out the task." Augustine’s temper snapped like a whip. His hand shot out, grabbing Robert by the collar and yanking him up with brutal force, his face twisted with murderous rage. "If you really don’t know who is behind it, I’ll just kill you right here." His fist flew, landing a vicious punch square in Robert’s eye. Robert howled in pain, crumpling to the ground, clutching his face. But Augustine wasn’t done. He seized him again by the collar and delivered another brutal blow to his jaw — a sickening crack sounding in the room as a few teeth flew loose, blood dribbling from Robert’s mouth. "Stop. Please, stop," Robert cried out, raising his hands in surrender, his whole body trembling. His left eye was already swollen shut, the surrounding skin turning an ugly, dark purple. His jaw ballooned grotesquely. "I-I’ll find out who it is," he stammered frantically. "Give me twenty-four hours — just twenty-four hours. I swear, even if he is hiding in hell itself, I’ll drag him out. Please, have mercy." Augustine flexed his knuckles and rolled his shoulders, cracking his neck with a sharp jerk. Every fiber of him wanted to crush Robert into the floor. But he held himself back. Robert’s connections across the city would be useful. Killing him now would be a waste of a useful tool. "This is your last chance," Augustine growled, cold and lethal. "Twenty-four hours. Not a minute more. If you fail," he leaned closer, his eyes burning, "you’ll be in the grave before you can beg again." Robert nodded frantically, terror stark in his gaze. "I swear, I’ll get you what you want." "Get out," Augustine barked. "Thank you, thank you so much." Robert scrambled to his feet and staggered out of the room, practically tripping over himself in his haste. Augustine exhaled heavily, dropping onto the leather sofa. He wiped the blood from his knuckles with a handkerchief, his expression still dark and brooding. "Bring me a drink," he ordered, his voice clipped and sharp. Without a word, Gustave moved quickly, pouring a large glass of strong liquor and handing it to him. Augustine took a heavy swig, the fire still raging inside him. "What are your orders?" Gustave asked quietly. Augustine stared at the door where Robert had fled, his jaw tightening. "Follow him," he said grimly. "Don’t let him out of your sight." Gustave waved a hand, signaling the guards to follow Robert. While Augustine was still dealing with Robert, Anne finished up her work and exited the company building. She stood at the curb, waiting for her cab. Just then, a sleek, luxurious car glided to a stop beside her. Anne’s brows furrowed in confusion when she saw the butler step out and approach her. "Madam," he said politely, "please come with me. The old master wishes to speak with you." Anne blinked, startled. She had just met Dimitri the previous night, and he had even spoken to Augustine directly. What could he possibly want now? A ripple of unease stirred in her chest. "I... I’ll call Augustine," she said hesitantly, her hand instinctively reaching for her phone. "Maybe he can come with me to the mansion." The butler’s expression shifted slightly. "There is no need to call him." His tone grew firmer. "The old master wishes to speak to you — and only you."
