Chapter 296: Oliver was stabbed Oliver’s body jerked as the blade sank deeper, the pain sucking the breath from his lungs. "I hate you," Megan screamed like a madwoman. "I hate all of you." She raised the knife again to stab him, but before the blade could connect Oliver, Augustine knocked her off her feet with a brutal kick. "Ah," Megan cried out as she hit the floor hard. Before she could recover, Augustine was on her. He yanked the knife from her grasp and in one fierce motion, struck her across the face, sending her head whipping to the side, her ears ringing. "Take her away," Augustine shouted. "Make sure she pays for what she has done." Two men in black immediately grabbed Megan by the arms and hauled her up. She thrashed and screamed, but it was over. They dragged her from the hall, her cries fading. The room stood still, stunned, shaken. "Dad..." Anne’s voice cracked as she dropped to her knees beside Oliver, who lay curled on the floor, writhing in pain, his hands soaked in blood as he clutched his stomach. She pulled him into her arms, her tears falling freely. Oliver reached up with a trembling hand and gently brushed her cheek, his fingers barely steady. "Don’t cry," he whispered. "I’m just... relieved you are safe." "Don’t speak," Anne choked out between sobs. "We are getting you help. You’ll be okay, I promise." She looked around frantically. "Augustine..." she screamed. He was already on his way, kneeling beside her. "I’ve got him." Augustine carefully slipped an arm around Oliver’s back and began lifting him. Anne supported him from the other side. Together, they guided him out of the hall. Just then, Nathan rushed back into the room. The moment he saw his father bloodied and barely conscious, a jolt of shock ripped through him. "What happened?" he shouted, horror crawling up his spine as his gaze fell to the deep red stain spreading across Oliver’s clothes. "Dad..." He stumbled forward, instinctively pressing his hand to the wound to slow the bleeding. "Oh God... so much blood," he muttered, voice cracking. "What the hell had happened to him? Who did this to him? "It’s not the time for all this. We need to get him to the hospital—now," Augustine said urgently. Nathan nodded quickly, turning to Anne. "Stay here with Mom. I’ll go with Augustine." With barely a second lost, the two men lifted Oliver and carried him out to the car. Anne followed close behind, her breath ragged, her chest tight with fear. They gently placed Oliver in the back seat, his face pale, his breathing shallow. "Stay with Mom," Nathan told her again before slipping into the car beside Oliver and closing the door with a thud. Then the car sped off into the night, quickly vanishing down the drive. Anne stood frozen, her arms wrapped tightly around herself, watching the car disappear. "Anne..." Audrey came running, her face pale and stricken. "Your mother—" Anne spun around instantly, panic rising in her chest. "What happened to her?" She was afraid her mother was also injured. "She collapsed." Anne’s heart stopped. Without delay, she bolted back toward the house. "Anne... Slow down," Audrey called, chasing after her. "Please, be careful—you might fall." But Anne wasn’t listening. Her mind was screaming. As she burst back into the hall, her eyes immediately landed on a crowd gathered around the long sofa. Her stomach dropped. "Mom," she cried, rushing toward the group. The guests stepped aside, creating a path for her. Anne’s blood ran cold when she saw Margaret lying motionless on the sofa. "Mom..." She dropped to her knees beside her. "What happened to you?" She gripped Margaret’s shoulders and shook her, trying to wake her. "Please, wake up..." "Don’t worry," Dimitri chimed in as he approached and placed a hand on Anne’s shoulder. "I’ve already called our family doctor. He is on his way. You need to stay calm." Anne looked up at him, her face streaked with tears. The warmth in his eyes steadied her. "Grandpa..." she whispered, rising to her feet and falling into his arms. "I’m so scared." Dimitri held her close. "It’s going to be alright," he comforted her, stroking her hair. "You have to stay strong now." "Anne, dear, we are here with you." Then another voice reached her through the blur of panic. "Don’t stress out." Anne turned and saw Paule coming over, Patricia beside him. Relief washed over her like a wave when she saw them unharmed. "Papa... Patricia..." she breathed, her eyes searching theirs. "Are you okay?" "We are fine," Patricia assured her gently. "Don’t worry about us. We are right here." In the chaos of fear and uncertainty, Anne found a sliver of comfort in the faces of the people who loved her. "Thank goodness you are okay," Anne said through sobs, wrapping her arms tightly around Patricia. The tears wouldn’t stop. "Everything changed so fast. Just moments ago, I was happy. Why did it all have to fall apart like this?" Patricia’s heart ached at the sight of Anne’s breakdown, but she fought to keep herself composed. "Don’t cry," she comforted her, hugging her back. "I know things are messy here. You need to think about yourself and the baby. Stress isn’t good for either of you. Try to calm down, just breathe." Just then, the butler appeared, guiding a man in behind him. "The doctor has arrived." Anne immediately turned and rushed back to her mother’s side. The doctor sat beside Margaret, checking her pulse and carefully examining her condition. After a few tense minutes, he gave her a shot and stood up, addressing Dimitri. "There is no need to panic. She is in shock, that’s all. I have given her an injection. She should wake up shortly." Turning to Anne, he added, "Once she wakes up, give her soup. Keep her hydrated. Try not to give her tension. If there is anything, contact me immediately." "Thank you, doctor," Anne said gratefully. The doctor gave her a reassuring nod and walked away, the butler leading him out of the house. Anne lowered herself beside Margaret, taking her mother’s hand in hers. "Mom..." she choked out. Dimitri turned to the murmuring guests still gathering around them. He stepped forward and said regretfully, "We deeply regret the way this evening has turned out. Please, allow the family some peace now. We appreciate your presence, but I must ask that you all head home." Understanding the gravity of the moment, the guests offered their sympathy, many briefly embracing Anne or murmuring words of comfort before leaving one by one. As the last guest stepped out and the door quietly shut behind them, a heavy silence settled over the mansion. The once-lively hall now felt hollow, filled only with the lingering tension of the horrific incident that had just happened. Anne wiped away the tears clinging to her lashes and turned to Dimitri, who sat on a nearby sofa, his posture stooped. Exhaustion clung to his expression, yet he sat there to support her. "Grandpa, you must be exhausted," she said softly. "Why don’t you stay here tonight? I’ll take you to the guest room." Dimitri gently raised his hand, motioning for her to stay seated. "Don’t worry about me," he said. "I’ll leave after Margaret wakes up. I want to make sure she is alright." Before Anne could respond, her phone buzzed in her hand. She glanced at the screen. Nathan. She answered quickly. "Hello?" "How is Mom?" Nathan’s voice came through, tight with worry. Anne looked over at Margaret, still lying unconscious on the sofa. "She fainted," she said quietly. "The doctor came already. He said it’s just shock. She’ll wake up soon." "Shit..." Nathan muttered under his breath. "How’s Dad?" "The surgery is going on," Nathan replied, sounding drained. "Don’t be concerned. I’m right here with him. But listen, stay close to Mom. Don’t leave her side, okay?" There was a pause, then he added, "She might say or do something emotional when she wakes up. Don’t let it shake you. In her room, there is medicine for when she gets overwhelmed. Make sure she takes it if she needs it, okay?" Anne nodded. "I understand. I’ll take care of her." "Oh, God," Nathan sighed. "I never imagined it would all turn into this disaster..." After a moment of pause, he asked gently, "And you? How are you holding up?" Anne’s throat tightened. Her lips parted, and she said slowly, "I’m... scared." Nathan didn’t speak for a few seconds, a storm brewing inside him. This should be the happiest moment of Anne’s life. Instead, it turned out to be a disaster. And it was all because of one person – Megan. The name alone made his blood boil. He had loved her like his own sister, trusted her. For years, he had believed in her goodness, believed she belonged in their family. In reality, Megan was nothing but a snake raised by the family. She had stabbed the very man who had shown her nothing but love. Oliver had taken her in, given her a home, and raised her as his own. But in return, she didn’t flinch to stab him. Nathan’s heart pulsed with a mix of grief and rage. "Don’t be scared," he said, forcing his voice to remain calm, hiding the fury that threatened to spill over. "Just hold on a little longer. This will pass. You are safe. That’s all that matters. I’m hanging up now. I’ll keep you updated." As the call ended, his expression hardened. "You have seen my love, Megan. Now wait for my wrath."
