Chapter 27: You chose your career over me. Inside Denis’s office... Denis dialed a number and pressed the phone tightly against his ear. "Listen up," he ordered. His voice was grave, filled with quiet authority. "Check the surveillance footage and see if someone tampered with Anne’s laptop last night." He still found it hard to believe that anyone would dare to access her laptop and delete an important file. But at the same time, he couldn’t ignore the possibility. He had already made one mistake—dismissing Anne when she had told him about being in danger that night. And later, he learned the truth. Billy had tried to kidnap her. He wouldn’t make the same mistake of doubting her. Determination flashed in his sharp eyes. If someone had indeed tried to slander Anne, they would pay the price. Just then, the office door creaked open. Denis turned his head slightly, his gaze flickering toward the entrance. Tania. He barely spared her a glance before returning his focus to the call. "Do it fast," he commanded. "I need the results immediately." He ended the call, slipping his phone into the pocket of his coat before striding toward his chair. Tania’s voice rang out, laced with irritation. "Why are you still giving her a chance?" She stormed toward him. "She ignored your orders. She didn’t even finish her job. This is outrageous. You should fire her immediately." Denis’s movements stilled. Slowly, he lifted his gaze to her, his expression turning cold. "This is an office matter, and you have no right to interfere. Don’t come here as you please—it disrupts my work." Tania stiffened, her face paling at the ice in his tone. Denis dismissed her entirely, picking up a file and flipping it open as if she no longer existed in the room. Tania’s lips parted in frustration as she studied Denis’s rigid posture. She had thought their night together had changed things, that the distance between them had finally dissolved. But the icy glare in his eyes told a different story. "Are you still mad at me?" she asked cautiously. "I thought we had moved past this, that we reconciled." "Reconciled?" Denis cut her off with bitterness. "Is that what you think happened?" He scowled at her, his insides curdling with bitterness. "Five years... We were together for five years. I loved you, planned a future with you—I thought I would marry you. But you walked away. You chose your career over me." Tania flinched at his tone. She shook her head, panic flickering in her eyes, but Denis didn’t give her a chance to speak. "You left the country and never looked back," he continued. "For three years, not a single call, not a single message. You never cared about what I was going through, whether I was okay. And then, out of nowhere, you returned and wanted to get back to me. Do you really think I was just waiting for you all that time?" Tania swallowed hard, her palms sweating profusely. "But you were happy to see me," she argued. "You spent time with me like before... You remembered everything about me—what I love, what I hate, what makes me laugh." She took a shaky breath. "Then we—we made love. I thought that meant you forgave me." Denis let out a cold, bitter scoff. "Forgive you? You shattered my heart. You left me behind like I was nothing. You think one night is enough to erase all of that? You think I can forgive you so easily?" Tania felt a helpless anger simmering within her. She felt her chest tighten. She had played her cards carefully, making sure every step she took would lead her back to Denis. She had been convinced that she had won, that his eagerness to see her again meant he had let go of the past. But now, facing his cold resentment, she realized just how wrong she had been. Her chest tightened with unease. This wasn’t the reaction she had anticipated. His anger, his bitterness—it made her nervous. ’No. I have to make him understand. I have to win him over—no matter what it takes.’ Pushing back her hesitation, Tania softened her expression and moved in closer to him, forcing a gentle smile onto her lips. "I’m sorry. I know I made mistakes. I was foolish back then... I put my career ahead of everything, even you." She paused, searching his eyes, but found nothing but cold detachment. "But after being away from you, I realized how much you meant to me," she continued. "You weren’t just a part of my life—you were my life, Denis. Not my career, not fame... just you." She reached out to touch his face, but he pushed her hand away. "Really?" He arched an eyebrow. "And it took you three years to figure that out?" Tania’s stomach twisted. His sharp words, the sarcasm in his tone—it was unsettling. "No, it’s not like that," she tried to explain. "I realized it much sooner, but I was... ashamed of myself. I left you because I wanted to build my career, to prove something to myself. If I had come back too soon, people would have laughed at me, mocked me for failing. So, I forced myself to stay away. I buried myself in work, hoping that once I made a name, I could return to you with pride." Her face fell, disappointment crossing her face. "But I was wrong. I didn’t achieve much in the industry." Denis snorted as he turned away from her. He had no patience for her words, no interest in her excuses. But Tania wasn’t about to let him slip away. She had come too far, invested too much. Losing him was not an option. "Denis," she whispered, her lips forming a soft pout. "I’ve already apologized. Can’t you just forgive me? For the sake of our child?" His body tensed. His gaze dropped to where her hand rested lightly against her stomach. Conflicting emotions stormed within him. The anger, the resentment, the betrayal—it was all still there. But so was the reality he couldn’t escape. The child. He couldn’t possibly ignore his child. Tania smirked sneakily. She knew exactly where to strike. As long as she mentioned the child, he wouldn’t be able to leave her. Seizing the moment, she reached up, her fingers brushing against the sharp lines of his jaw. "I’ll make you happy," she murmured, her voice velvety smooth, coaxing. "This weariness... it’ll disappear, just like that." Her fingers trailed down from his jaw, ghosting over his throat before reaching his tie. Slowly, deliberately, she tugged at the knot, loosening it inch by inch. Denis stiffened as he stared at her, his expression unreadable. "What are you doing?" he asked, his voice rough, hesitant. Tania’s lips curled into a sultry smile, her eyes glinting with lust and longing. "Relax and let me please you."
