Chapter 299: The brutal punishment Megan trembled with rising panic. "Are you going to talk or not?" he barked. Startled by his outburst, Megan flinched. "I don’t know anything," she whimpered. Another slash. This time across her other cheek. She wailed in pain, her strength crumbling. "Please, let me go. Nathan, for the years we spent together—please help me." But Nathan’s face twisted with disgust. "Let you go? Never." "I’ll release you," Augustine said coldly, "but only if you tell me everything." Nathan turned toward Augustine, confused. "Are you serious?" Augustine raised a hand, silencing him. "You have my word," he said, locking eyes with Megan. "Talk, and I’ll let you go if your answers satisfy me. Lie, and I’ll cut you again and again until you bleed to death." Megan stared at him, trying to read the truth in his hardened face. She could tell he was serious. ’This man is crazy. He’ll torture me to death. I need to tell him the truth.’ But then, a doubt crossed her mind. Could she trust him? Probably not. But the pain was real, and so was the fear. She had to at least give it a try. Maybe he’d let her go, or even turn her over to the authorities. If that happened, she’d survive, and later, she could figure out a way to escape. But for now, the only option was to comply with him. "I don’t know everything," she said cautiously. "But... I heard my father saying his revenge will go on, no matter what. Even if he is behind bars, it won’t stop." Augustine’s mind raced as he replayed Megan’s words. Things started to get clearer to him. He had already uncovered Hugo’s ties with a local land mafia, the one that had been a thorn in his side for months. And now, hearing Megan confirm that Hugo’s plans would continue even from behind bars, Augustine knew with certainty: locking Hugo up wouldn’t stop him. His influence ran deep, far beyond prison walls. "I told you everything I know," Megan said, dragging him out of his thoughts. "Now let me go." Before Augustine could speak, Nathan cut in sharply. "You can’t do that. You can’t just let her walk free." But Augustine remained composed, unfazed by Nathan’s anger. "I don’t break my word," he said coolly. With a flick of his hand, he gestured to the guard. "Untie her." Nathan’s eyes widened with fury. "Are you insane? You are just going to let her go?" he shouted, unable to contain his frustration. Megan’s lips curled into a relieved smile the moment her hands were free. "Thank you, Augustine. Thank you for sparing me," she said breathlessly, already trying to rise. But Augustine’s hand clamped firmly on her shoulder, forcing her back onto the floor. "Where do you think you are going?" he asked icily. "I said I’d let you go if your answer satisfied me. It didn’t." Her face drained of color. "What? But I told you everything I knew. You can’t go back on your word." "I’m not," Augustine replied flatly. "You just didn’t meet the condition. And now, you’ll face the price." "You bastard," Megan spat. Augustine rose to his feet and stepped back. "Guards," he ordered coldly. "Punish her." Two guards stepped forward and seized Megan by the arms, yanking her roughly to her feet. "Wait—what are you doing?" she screamed, thrashing wildly in their grip. But her resistance was futile. They dragged her across the room and slammed her down against a heavy wooden table. One guard pinned her arms down with brutal force, while the other locked her wrists in place, leaving her completely helpless. "What—what are you going to do?" Megan gasped, her voice cracking with terror. Then her eyes caught the glint of steel. Another guard was approaching with a butcher’s knife in hand. "No," she shrieked, twisting and turning, trying to break free. But she couldn’t escape. And the guard was stepping in closer. "No...Don’t come near me." But the man’s face was cold, devoid of emotion. He lifted the heavy blade high above his head and brought it down with a sickening thud. "Ahhh..." Megan’s scream tore through the room, sharp and agonizing. Blood sprayed across the table as her fingers were chopped, and her body convulsed in shock. But the assault didn’t stop. The knife came down again and again until all her fingers were gone. Megan was barely conscious, her screams reduced to faint, broken gasps. As the guards finally let go, her limp body crumpled to the floor. Blood pooled beneath her. "Take her away," Augustine said coldly, devoid of pity. "Dump her in the river. Make it look like an accident." "Yes, sir," one of the guards replied, already dragging Megan’s battered body toward the exit. Nathan stumbled backward, his face pale, sweat beading at his temples. Megan’s screams still rang in his ears. He collapsed into a corner, gagging, then doubled over as vomit splattered the floor. His insides twisted, repulsed by the gruesome scene he had just witnessed. Across the room, Augustine was as cold as ice. He plucked a handkerchief from his coat and carefully wiped the blood from his fingers. He glanced over at Nathan. "I warned you," Augustine said flatly. "You said you wanted justice. You said you would punish Megan with your own hands. But now look at you." He motioned to the mess on the floor. "Pathetic." Nathan braced himself against the wall, panting. Embarrassment and nausea warred inside him. He turned a narrow-eyed glare on Augustine. "Are you mocking me?" Augustine raised both hands in mock surrender, but the smile tugging at the corner of his mouth said otherwise. "Mock you? Never. You are my dear brother-in-law." Nathan froze, shaken. The smugness, the control, the ease with which Augustine had overseen the punishment it didn’t feel human. It was as if torturing someone to death was his daily job. It was the first time Nathan had ever witnessed such raw, merciless violence. Whatever anger he had felt toward Megan vanished the instant he saw the guards hold her down and chop off her fingers one by one like dicing vegetables. Her shrieks still seemed to echo through the walls. He had never seen anything like it, and he never wanted to again. The brutality was sickening—but what truly unsettled him was Augustine’s eerie composure. He didn’t blink, didn’t hesitate. How could anyone be that cold and that lethal at once? "How... how did you do that? At so much each?" he asked, curious and terrified. Augustine turned. "Do what?" "That," Nathan’s voice shook. "You tortured her like that. And then... and then just tell them to dump her in the river. Like she is trash." He squinted at him. "You really plan to kill her?" Augustine stared at him thoughtfully. He studied him, scanned him. He had known from the start that Nathan couldn’t handle this, that he’d ask too many questions, flinch at the blood. But still, he brought him because he didn’t want to hide anything from him. "Wasn’t this what you wanted?" Augustine asked calmly. "You were the one who said you wanted to punish her. Or are you wavering now? Feeling sorry for her? Don’t forget she is the woman who tried to kill your sister, who injured your father." He stepped closer. "Your sister is pregnant, and your father is still in the ICU. And you feel pity for her?" Nathan stiffened. His gut clenched. It would have been easier to say he felt nothing, but that would be a lie. When he saw Megan sprawled on the ground in a pool of blood, screaming in pain, his heart twisted. For a second, he had wanted to shout at the guards, to make them stop. But the gore, the shock—it had paralyzed him. He hadn’t moved. He hadn’t spoken. Now, Augustine’s words dragged his memory back to the hospital, to Oliver’s blood-covered body. His father could have died. Even worse, Anne could have been seriously injured. After years of searching, they had finally found the lost daughter of the Granet family, only to nearly lose her for good at her own welcome party—all because of Megan. She deserved everything that came to her. Nathan’s jaw locked. "I haven’t forgotten. Not for a second. She should suffer. She needs to. I won’t pity her." He looked Augustine in the eye. "But what happens when the police come knocking? You cut off her fingers. You had her thrown into a river. Are you really not worried about what comes next?" Augustine slipped the blood-stained handkerchief back into his pocket. "I’ve got nothing to worry about. My men know how to clean up a mess. The police will find a burned-out car and a body charred beyond recognition. As for Megan—she’ll stay at the bottom of that river forever." Nathan’s stomach turned again. He wasn’t sure what chilled him more—the violence he had witnessed, or the man who spoke of it like it was routine. Augustine didn’t look like a man. He looked like something else entirely. Cold. Calculated. Lethal. "Is this... something you do often?" Nathan asked, dazed by the calm horror of it all.
